  • Aww.

  • I watched a fair share of Gomer Pyle reruns as a kid. And it was an absolute conundrum to me that Jim Nabors's powerful singing voice (heard on commercials, and the occasional GP, USMC episode) and the reedy voice he used as Gomer came out of the same guy. Rest in peace, Jim. Thanks for containing multitudes.

  •  RIP Jim Nabors.  I watched a lot of episodes of Gomer Pyle as a kid also. As a grown-up now, I believe that there was no mention of the Vietnam War although this show was filmed during that time? I know that this show was a comedy but why not mention the war? Jim Nabors also had a variety show from 1969 to 1971 which I do not remember, of course, I was in high school at the time and had a lot of other interests.

I'm reasonably certain that they never mentioned the war, presumably because it wouldn't have fit in with the type of escapist humor they wanted to do.

We discuss that very question over here, in the thread "Military Sitcoms."

Specifically, down toward the bottom of page 11 of the comments (just to save you the trouble of searching).
