This was a tough one. He and the rest of the Monty Python group were/are comedy legends. .

He was multi-talented. Besides his Python masterpieces, I fondly remember his work on the History Channel: Terry Jones' Medieval Lives and Terry Jones' The Barbarians. 

I first misread this as "one of the great comedy idiots of my youth." All things considered, that's probably not too far off the mark (all respect intended). I was even more sorry to learn of his dementia than I was of his death.

Aww. A true polymath.
