  • I used to watch Soap and later Benson. I always found it interesting that a snide butler who was not a main character in any way, shape or form would end up getting his own show, or that that show would last for several seasons.

If you've never seen it, here's his speech from Sports Night about the confederate flag:

  • I always enjoyed Benson as a kid, and then I loved SportsNight.

  • There were a lot of clever actors on Soap, but he had a way of stealing every scene. He was good on Benson also, but he didn't have the same quality of fellow actors with him.

So far, I haven't seen Sports Night. I have to fix that.

I think networks were more willing then to try to make spinoffs than they are today. Plus, Soap had the advantage of a talent like Robert Guillaume to make it work.

Thanks; I have never seen it. Somehow, Sports Night was totally under the radar for me. I know about it more because Guillaume took ill with a stroke during production and worked his way back.

I also remember him from Lean on Me, and always thought he should have played the lead; he has a much stronger resemblance to the real-life Joe Clark than Morgan Freeman does.
