I’m not certain if this series is ongoing or limited or what, but it represents an opportunity for creators other than Dave Stevens to play around in the Rocketeer universe. Issue #1 features stories by John Cassiday, Mike Allred, and Kurt Busiek & Michael Kaluta, with pin-ups by Mike Mignola and Jim Silke. It had multiple covers, but I bought the one by Alex Ross. The stories are light and action oriented. On tap for next issue are Darwyn Cooke, Geof Darrow, Lowell Francis, Gene Ha, Alex Ross, Dave Stevens, Mark Waid and Chris Weston.

Good fun!

  • I think it's meant to be a four-issue miniseries.

  • I enjoyed the first issue -- it's all lightweight stuff, but done by very talented creators. And the presence of Darwyn Cooke ensures I'll be picking up issue 2.
  • But is a Rocketeer not by Dave Stevens really the Rocketeer? Much like the Spirit or Fathom, are some characters too intertwined with their creators. I just read the two non-Alan Moore Top 10 minis and while they're good solid stories, they're not as good as the original series.

Now I know comics are done after their creators leave/quit/change companies/or sadly pass away, but do the readers consider those later books as "real"?

  • I think in the Rocketeer's case, there's such a small body of work that there's plenty of room for more, even if it's not "real." I think the character has enough life in him that he can live beyond his creator -- I hope so, anyway. The question in the coming months will be -- is anyone steering the ship in Stevens' absence, saying what's canon and what isn't?

Well, like I said, this series "represents an opportunity for creators other than Dave Stevens to play around in the Rocketeer universe," and as Rob added, "it's all lightweight stuff, but done by very talented creators." Wwith Stevens sadly gone, that's as real as it's going to get.
  • If the mini is a success, and with the talent listed it should be, and there is an All-New Rocketeer #1, will Dave Stevens' fans accept it?
  • The first issue was enjoyable and I'll definitely be back for issue two.

I don't know ... we're still reading stories about Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Arrow, Green Lantern, Black Canary, Captain America, Daredevil, the X-Men, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Thor, etc., etc., and so forth, and their original creators are dead, retired or no longer working on those books ...
  • I'm really only familiar with the Rocketeer from the film, which I loved as a kid. I saw a bit of it on TV last week and what I saw still holds up. I saw that a new comic was out but didn't think anything of it. But with a lineup of those creators, it's warrants a look from me. Most likely it'll be in tpb. If it's not collected in tpb then I'll have a new title to add to my list when I go back issue diving. :)

I didn't know until a few years ago that the Rocketeer was a comic book. I just thought it was an idea for a movie. How was the original series? Is it similiar to the movie?

  • Of course but I was referring to creator owned characters which is a different ballgame altogether.
