Metamorpho was definitely one of the more powerful Silver Age heroes who should have been part of the Justice League. But he would have been so different from the others as much as if Spider-Man joined!

It's interesting that Haney says that Donenfeld increased the book's print run. This made it start losing money and caused Haney to change his writing approach, which made things worse. Haney says Stan Lee tried to hire him away and that he wished he had gone.

Haney said in the interview that some of the later Metamorpho stories that he didn't write were played "too straight." I think that if he was in the JLA his personality wouldn't have been there.

And think about this timeline:

  • Metamorpho turns down the JLA in Justice League of America #42 (F'66) with an appearance in #44 (Ap'66).
  • He battles the Metal Men and gets temporarily cured (very similar to Ben Grimm) in Brave & the Bold #66 (Jl'66).
  • Two issues later in B&B #68 (N'66), the Element Man has to deal with Batman becoming the Bat-Hulk, thanks to the Joker, the Penguin and the Riddler!

Blue Blazes, what a year!

Thanks for mentioning this. I read all five pages. It's a great interview.

Haney says at one point that the wheelchair-bound Chief was stolen from a TV show. The only one I can think of is Ironside starring Raymond Burr. It didn't start until September 1967, however, which was years after Doom Patrol started.
