It's supposed to start after midnight here...maybe a couple of inches. Huzzah! It's cocoa and Sky Captain night at the Beechler-Simpson home!

Too bad no one thought to not let said Senator back into the country as an "undesirable character"!

I reached out to longtime Legionnaire's Jeff and Tracy. Tracy tells me they lost power and heat on Monday and Internet service on Monday afternoon. The power and heat are back up but Internet is not. They're boiling water, but at least have access to water to boil, and say they're "luckier than most folks."

I hope that their situation gets better!

I've been shoveling snow for two days. That's not too bad but the side of my house keeps freezing up and that's where the drains are. If I don't keep removing all the ice then the basement floods!

Thank you for checking on Jeff and Tracy, CK. I'm happy to hear they're OK.

We had ice last Thursday morning and got enough to close schools Thursday and Friday. Sunday, we had several inches of snow on top of the ice, and temperatures dipped into the single-digits. More snow came Wednesday, maybe another four inches on top of what we already had. My wife and I have been homebound since Sunday, but we've had power and water and Internet access. Her school has been closed, but mine has been on distance learning since Friday until today, which we called as a snow day for everyone.

I walked out into the snow a bit today and found that I really need to get some rain or snow boots. The sun shone all day today, but it never got above freezing, and it's supposed to drop into the single-digits again tonight. I helped the next-door neighbor find his water shutoff under the ice and snow as they had a pipe burst in their house.

After nine days, we're finally supposed to get above freezing tomorrow, but we'll probably drop just below again tomorrow night. It's very possible we may have no school again Monday.

In Memphis, because of broken water mains, there is a boil water advisory, and all restaurants in the city have closed, as has the airport. Some areas have been without power as well.

Rhodes College in Memphis is having to relocate its students to motels out in the suburbs due to no water pressure.

Copying from the "Anything, Everything, or Nothing at All" thread:

Jeff and I are checking in. We are in the DFW area in Texas and did lose power most of the day Monday. Since then, we have had heat and power but no internet. The rolling blackouts killed our router. Poor Jeff hasn't been able to post or read anything for a while. We are hoping to get back online Monday or Tuesday.

We are safe, warm, and together. We are thankful it hasn't been worse for us this week. Hope everyone is doing okay. Stay safe and warm. Be careful out there.

We were able to keep the house warm enough to protect the pipes. With the boil water order, we lost some water pressure but never ran out. The boil order should be over tomorrow.

As I said, we have been extremely lucky through this crisis.

I was also fortunate in that I was never part of the "boil your water" edict. We're up to 55F now, so most of the snow has melted away.

I do know that San Antonio and Austin got hit harder than the Dallas area during the second wave of snow on Wednesday. I have one friend in San Antonio his power came on for all of 20 minutes before it went out again.

I was glad to hear that everyone I know is back up and running as far as power and water goes.

This weather event was the most I've had family and friends reaching out and checking on me. Its always nice to know that people care.

I just posted something to "Anything, Everything or Nothing at All" but it seems this is the thread to discuss it. To summarize, the worst we had it was 11 hours without power, indoor temperature 54 degrees. The other outages we experienced Monday through Thursday were between 40 minutes and two hours.

We didn't even realize that the power and the internet were two different issues, but after power was restored we still didn't have phone or internet. We were supposed to have a new router delivered yesterday, but it didn't arrive. We were still without phone or internet as late as earlier today, but when I saw green lights on the router I checked for a dial tone on the phone and had one. Online now (obviously), but still no router. Huh.

Here we are with the first snowfall of 2022. I call it a snowfall because when I was a kid, it took more than a foot of snow to make the world stop moving. But where I live, any amount of snow, no matter how minor, is dubbed a "storm," even if it's just a couple of snowflakes. The weather crew on my favorite local TV station is even branded as "Storm Team 4."

But this time around, I think the term "storm" qualifies. A long stretch of Interstate 95 in Virginia got slammed with snow and rain, causing six tractor-trailers to jackknife, dozens upon dozens of crashes, and leaving hundreds and possibly thousands of drivers stuck on it for a full day. Among the people stranded overnight: U.S. Senator Tim Kaine. Even the president's motorcade got jammed up

Also, one guy flew from San Francisco to Dulles Airport and got in an Uber to ride home to Richmond, which would typically take one-and-a-half to two hours. It took nine. Uber charged him $200 for the ride, which is not out of line -- but then, in an example of capitalism at its finest, tacked on a $400 surcharge

Let's see... looking back at my previous posts to this thread, I experienced snow on two consecutive days in 2015, and once in 2021. We have just experienced the warmest December in 130 years of record-keeping. That doesn't mean we won't have a potentially freezing winter, however, and I am not confident that the Texas power grid will be able to handle it if we do.

Two weeks ago, in December (technically, last year), we had mid-50s weather through the Christmas-to-New-Year's-Day stretch. And now this. Plus, there's a forecast of more show by Friday.
