Can you help me find which Marvel comics featured the Soviet Super Soldiers as antagonists? Based on the recommendation of the Legion, I bought Marvel Team-Up Annual #2. It sounded like it might have been the right issue but it wasn't. The Super Soldiers were only a trio, and the story I'm looking for contained a foursome. It's possible (though not guaranteed) that this was the first issue in which Ursa Major was added to the team.

  • Could it have been an issue of The Incredible Hulk? Issue 258 maybe?
  • I think the first time I saw, Vanguard, Darkstar, and Crimson Dynamo together was in Iron Man #109, where Iron Man and Jack of Hearts met them on the moon. There was a mix up (shock, shock) and they battled before teaming up.

I think the next time I saw the was when Incredible Hulk was being written by Bill Mantlo, the same writer as the story above, and Hulk was traversing the globe meeting all kinds of international heroes. He met the Super-Soldiers, who now included Ursa Major. It was during this story that Darkstar and Vanguard found out they were brother and sister, which IIRC led to a somewhat icky moment where Van says something like "it's a shock to find you are my sister, when I was hoping for so much more."

    Um....yuck.

That would have been around the #250s.
  • You replied while I was typing. 258 sounds about right.

  • Thanks, guys.
  • Are you just looking for their earliest appearance, Chris, or any appearance where they were the "bad guys?"
  • I'm looking for a specific appearance from a comic I read as a kid. It included two heroes, with one of them being the Hulk. That's why people pointed me to the Marvel Team-Up Annual last time, as that also starred Spider-Man. But the Incredible Hulk issue that PBP mentioned, which includes a Captain America cameo, might just be the right one.

However, the Iron Man story that Rich mentioned, co-starring Jack of Hearts, sounds pretty interesting, too. I know that wasn't the one I read as a kid but I might search it out anyway.

Of course, Jeff, if you have a list of other Soviet Super Soldiers appearances, I wouldn't mind hearing about it. At this point, I'm starting to build up quite a mini-collection.
  • In the 258 appearance, there's also a cameo by the female Red Guardian.

  • Try checking Mark Gruenwald's Captain America run. At comics.org, I see two covers 352-353 where they appear, though I think they appeared with some regularity there. I think they also appeared in X-Men vs. Avengers.
Later in/around the Teen Tony era, they were in a story arc there. Also, there's a Super Soldiers one-shot from the 1990s.
If you're interested in Soviet-era villains-to-us, I'd advise you to look up some of Unicorn's appearances as well. He's often lost in the jumble of more prominent characters.
  • I also looked up Crimson Dynamo under the Character Search at Comics.org. It appears that the Super Soldiers had a lengthy battle with The Champions.
Also, Contest of the Champions might be worth looking up.
The Super Soldiers might also appear in some of the Armor Wars saga, since Dynamo and Titanium man had tech based on Iron Man's armor.
Of note: Dynamo appears to have been in two MTU annuals, No. 2 and No. 7. However, No. 7 only has him as making a "cameo appearance" in a 5-page story.
  • If you're not following Invincible Iron Man right now, you should know that Tony is currently wearing the Crimson Dynamo armor. He and the current Dynamo are friends, and he was allowed to borrow the armor temporarily.
