“Supergirl” has finally arrived.

The first photos of Melissa Benoist as Supergirl were released Friday, just as production begins on the CBS pilot, which is based on characters from DC Comics.

The costume (pictured) was designed by three-time Oscar winner Colleen Atwood, who also designed the suits for two other DC Comics television properties, “The Flash” and “Arrow” of the CW.

Atwood, who’s been nominated for Academy Awards an additional eight times, was also the costume designer behind “Into the Woods,” “Snow White and the Huntsman,” “Alice in Wonderland,” “Memoirs of a Geisha” and “Chicago,” among others.

“Supergirl,” in contention for the 2015-16 season, follows Kara Danvers/Kara Zor-El (Benoist, “Glee,” “Whiplash”), Superman’s cousin, at age 24, when she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be, after leaving Krypton and hiding her powers.

Other series regulars include Calista Flockhart (“Ally McBeal,” “Brothers & Sisters”), who will play Kara’s tough boss at CatCo, Cat Grant; Mehcad Brooks (“Desparate Housewives,” “True Blood”), who will co-star as Kara’s love interest, Jimmy Olsen; Chyler Leigh (“Grey’s Anatomy”), who’s been cast as Kara’s doctor sister, Alex Danvers; and David Harewood (“Homeland”), as supervillain Hank Henshaw, better known as Cyborg Superman in the DC Comics world.

Laura Benanti will appear in a major recurring arc, playing Kara’s birth mother, Alura Zor-El.

Helen Slater, who starred in the 1984 “Supergirl” feature, and Superman vet Dean Cain (“Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman”) are set for secret roles.

The project hails from exec producers and writers Greg Berlanti (“The Flash,” “Arrow”), Ali Adler and Andrew Kreisberg. Sarah Schechter will also serve as an exec producer, and Glen Winter will direct the pilot. Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television will produce.

Somebody MAY have selected certain large theaters in large cities and had somebody count heads on the way into the theater. They could have had them just count the females going in and compare it to the total tickets sold.It wouldn't be particularly accurate but it would be better than nothing. I think the Avengers movies are attractive to both sexes because of the humor and dialogue. My wife will tell anybody she would go just for Thor.

My argument exactly. Catwoman and Elektra weren't failures because they had female leads -- they failed because they were bad movies. (Catwoman in particular was mind-bogglingly stupid from the get-go, because the screenwriters threw out decades of "focus group" testing by comics fans in finding what worked and didn't work for the character. Just go with the best-selling version, you know? But Hollywood decided it knew best, threw out decades of useful back story and storyboarding, and created a Catwoman from, um, scratch.)

I haven't seen the Catwoman movie (and hope never to see it), but my understanding is that they took the worst aspects of the Catwoman concept from Tim Burton's Batman Returns and dumped all of the good aspects. I suspect they never even looked at a Catwoman comic, old or current.

That would mean standing outside the individual show inside the complex, obviously, and possibly shifting from one room to another as other starting times neared, counting both total people and females. I suppose it's possible, but I've never heard of that happening.

Maybe, but bad numbers (thinking you know something) may be worse than no numbers (knowing you don't). It's way cheaper just to make up a number that sounds about right, because we all can agree that Avengers seems attractive to both sexes.

Even then, are females going to it, or do they not mind going when the guy they're with wants to go? I don't know if that makes a difference, but it's not the same thing. That logic would apply to Bridesmaids, for instance, in reverse.

LOL! My wife is the same. She'll stop to watch every Avengers commercial just for the shots of Thor. She also bought a box of Kellogg's Corn Flakes because she figured she'd eat them sooner or later and they had a huge picture of Thor on the front she could look at until then. It's really disgusting.

But she also says she'll readily see any movie that Tony Stark is in. That combination of arrogance, humor and competence is appealing, no doubt why she married me. But I digress.

I wish journalists would support a statistic like that with some kind of source, at least, if not method. I find it pretty suspect, up there with all the statistics on how much productivity is lost by the NCAA basketball tournament and the amount of money a Super Bowl brings to an area. They're goofy statistics, but they sound good and get repeated a lot.

On Supergirl, Maxwell is a green tech billionaire who enjoys a friendly rivalry with Cat Grant and a fascination with National City’s newest arrival — Supergirl.

Supergirl executive producer Andrew Kreisberg said, “Greg [Berlanti], Ali [Adler] and I have been fans of Peter for years.  We’re beyond thrilled to have him join us on Supergirl’s first adventures bringing the iconic Maxwell Lord to life.”

Based on the characters from DC Comics, Supergirl is from Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television. The series debuts Monday, October 26, at a special time of 8:30/7:30c on CBS, and will then air Mondays at 8/7c. Supergirl stars Melissa Benoist as Kara Danvers/Kara Zor-El/Supergirl, Mehcad Brooks as James Olsen, Chyler Leigh as Alexandra “Alex” Danvers, Jeremy Jordan as Winslow “Winn” Schott, with David Harewood as Hank Henshaw and Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant. The first episode of the series is scheduled for Monday October 26, 2015, on CBS stations.

The first episode apparently leaked on line and has been shown at some cons. It was even on YouTube until they had to take it down. So lots of people have already seen it and seem to like it, although that's going to vary based on what people were expecting/hoping for. I haven't seen it, but what I have seen, and what people have said, lead me to think I'm going to like it.

October 26th is a long time to wait. That's the same week that GRIMM also starts though, so obviously schedules are going to take awhile to settle into "normal," if they ever do. GOTHAM starts on Monday, so that gives it a chance to get going before the super-competition heats up.

I got some info from Warners about Red Tornado, which may or may not be its creator, T.O. Morrow. But here's a photo:

That's a tough call--it says he's T.O. Morrow, aka Red Tornado. But the Tornado is an android. My guess is that Morrow creates RT in his image, so he's playing both parts, and the info isn't making it clear that it's one actor not one role.

I also saw that they're going to be including Lucy Lane, Sam Lane and Non in the first nine shows. Those make some sense, but Red Tornado? That is really out of left field. And he looks pretty Red Tornado-y. It makes it clear that almost anybody could show up. Combined with the Flash's plan to rely on Earth-2 for a bunch of adventures, it could be a mind-blowing season.
