Television-Related Ramblings

I was watching the extras on the Doctor Who "Terror of the Vervoids" DVD. One of the extras is a collection of trailers and continuity pieces. You know, stuff like "Coming up next, the Doctor begins a desperate search for some mayonnaise in Part Two of 'The Spoiled Picnic'", and so on. These exist on many of the more recent Doctor Who DVDs. They're interesting because they often mention other shows that will be on, many that I've never heard of. Bergerac, for example. At any rate, on the "Vervoids" DVD, there's a continuity bit where the announceress says something along the lines of "Owing to the tragic death of Michael Rush, The Late, Late Breakfast Show will not be shown today. Or, in fact, ever again. Instead we will be showing the Disney film One of Our Dinosaurs is Missing." So, this intrigued me enough that I had to look it up: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Late,_Late_Breakfast_Show Boggles my mind. Who thought this was a good idea? Did the show's producers not run this idea by their lawyers? Plus, I've never been big on the whole "Putting average people on the television machine and having them do stupid stuff" genre. It's one thing having professionals do stupid stuff on the TV, but amateurs are almost never good television. Plus., killing your audience members probably isn't a good idea, either

  • Wow. And I thought that American TV producers came up with dump ideas. That was worse than [insert reality show here].
  • I can't remember - what's the real name of The Go On The Television and Embarass Yourself Trying to Sing and They Have an Obnoxious Englishman and They Just Fired Paula Abdul Show?
  • Apparently, its OK for the Oprah Oxygen Network to have a show called "Dance Your [Donkey] Off", but it's not OK for The Washington Post to print that name in its TV listings.
  • I'm okay with that, even though it's a little silly. Everyone should have the right to set their own editorial standards for that sort of thing. (well, for pretty much any sort of thing, actually.)

Would have been nice if they'd spelled it correctly, though.

Seems to me that it's spelled correctly? (In that an apostrophe is used to indicate truncated letters in a word, so "B's" is a legitimate truncation of "Basterds"...)
  • "Inglourious," I meant.

They did spell it correctly; the title of the Brad Pitt movie is Inglourious Basterds.

Oh, you mean, they didn't spell it "Inglorious Bastards"? Well, that would be wrong because a) that's changing the spelling of the title and b) that's another movie entirely (namely, that's the English title for "Quel Maledetto Trino Blindatto).
  • Tallahassee has a "Bad Ass Coffee" shop. That was the only way I knew I would be legally safe in displaying Kick Ass on my shelves.

Check out the Secret Headquarters (my store) website! It's a pretty lame website, but I did it myself, so tough noogies

Listen to WOXY.com, it's the future of rock-n-roll!

Actually, Jeff, we were responding at the same time to Dr. Hmm's "Dance Your Donkey Off" post... I didn't see your post until I got back to the thread just now...

There was briefly one of those in Rockford, IL...the couple of times we went there, we really liked it. And of course, the name amused the heck out of us. :)
