The modern era story of the Marvel Family began in the year 1940, when the wizard Shazam granted great power to young Billy Batson, enabling him to become the super-heroic Captain Marvel.

In imitation of this, Fon-Ti, a rival wizard, granted power to Robert Berman, who became the heroic Mighty Man.

In 1941, Bill passed a portion of his power to young Freddy Freeman, who became Captain Marvel Jr.  That same year, three other boys named "Billy Batson" ("Fat Billy", "Hill Billy" and "Tall Billy") became the :Lieutenant Marvels.

The next year, the "original" Billy met his long-lost sister, Mary, who became the super-heroine Mary Marvel.

At about the same time, in the town of Funny Animalville, somewhere in the Magical Realm, a young rabbit named Hoppy somehow tapped into Shazam's power, becoming the Marvel Bunny.

The Marvel Family expanded over the next few years, including Uncle Marvel (1943), Freckles Marvel  (1945), and sentient tiger, Mr. Tawky Tawnee (1948).

Sometime after this, the original Marvels disappeared, and their fate was not learned for some time.

In 1954, a young Briton named Micky Moran gained super-powers and began to fight crime.  He initially called himself "Captain Marvel", but fearing legal consequences, changed it to "Marvelman".  In 1955, he was joined by Young Marvelman (Dicky Dauntless), and Kid Marvelman (Johnny Bates).

In 1966, an alien android came to Earth and fought crime as Captain Marvel II, while using the secret identity of Roger Winkle. His career seems to have been short, and little is known of him.

In 1967,  Captain Mar-Vell, a Kree agent sent to scout out the Earth, sided with humanity, and became known as Captain Marvel III.

In 1973, the original Marvels were awakened from years in suspended animation. They returned to crime-fighting, and struck up an amiable relationship with Mar-Vell.

In 1977, Carol Danvers was exposed to energy from a device called a Psyche-Magnetron and became a Kree-human hybrid. She used her new-found powers to become Ms. Marvel.

Tragedy struck in 1982, when Mar-Vell died of cancer. That same year, New Orleans harbor patrol lieutenant Monica Rambeau was exposed to extra-dimensional energy, and became Captain Marvel IV.

In 1986, would-be wrestler Sharon Ventura gained super-powers and became Ms. Marvel II.

In 1992, Mighty Man was killed. Before he died, he inadvertently passed his powers on to nurse Ann Stevens, who became Mighty Man II.  S/he fought crime until 1995, when Ann, too, was killed, passing her powers on to Jill August, who became Mighty Man III.

That same year, Genis-Vell, Mar-Vell's son, became Captain Marvel V. He later became known as "Photon", and was killed in action in 2006.

In 2000, another Kree named Noh-Varr came to Earth, where he was sometimes known as "Marvel Boy".

In 2002,  Marvin Ellwood, son of former wrestler Alice Elwood (a.k.a Ms. Marvel III) and a Kree who claimed to be Mar-Vell, gained super-powers and became Captain Marvel VI.

In 2003, Phyla-Vell, an artificially-created daughter of Mar-Vell, came to Earth, where she was known for a time as Captain Marvel VII.

In 2005, Teddy Altman, the son of Mar-Vell and the Skrull Princess Anelle, became the super-hero known as Hulkling.

In 2007, Khn'nr, a Skrull sleeper agent programmed to believe he was Mar-Vell, became Captain Marvel VIII. He was mortally wounded in action, but not before convincing Noh-Varr to become Captain Marvel IX.

In 2011, children resembling Billy and Mary Batson  and Freddy Freeman (their connections to the originals are unknown), along with others named Eugene Choi, Pedro Peña and Darla Dudley gained the ability to become the super-heroic Captain Thunder.

In 2012, Carol Danvers, whose powers had caused her aging to slow, adopted the identity of Captain Marvel X.

Inspired by Carol's example. a young Inhuman named Kamala Khan became Ms. Marvel IV.

Little is known of the future of the Marvel Family. However, it is known that in the year 9000, one of their descendants, CeCe Beck, became the super-heroine known as Thunder.

At some point in the 853rd Century, a young boy named Tanist gained super-powers after being granted access to the power of Shazam.

  • ...Are you not counting the 20th Century Atlas Marvel Boy? Some version of him appeared in 70s Fantastic Four...Any other times in the 20th Century?
  • I wasn't sure how far I wanted to go in including every character that ever had the word "Marvel" in their name.  Was he ever connected Mar-Vell in any story?

  • ...The bit of Mickey Moran originally calling himself " Captain Marvel ' - That is an addition you came up with, right?

Was the original British MARVELMAN comic initially going to use the name " Captain Marvel " but the Brit publishers thought better of it and it was " MARVELMAN " by the time it reached the newsagents and High Streets of our fair, green & pleasant (well, my family considered it so - Your mileage may differ) mother country - by the time it actually came out in Britain!!!!!!!

  • From what I've read, and maybe the Skipper or somebody else can correct me on this, but the UK publishers of the original Fawcett Captain Marvel stories created the Marvelman characters when DC's successful lawsuit against Fawcett meant that there were going to be no more stories about the original Marvels.

So, yeah, the bit about the character deciding not to use the name was my admittedly somewhat jumbled attempts at an "in-story" explanation.
