- The opening sequence with Matt Hawk was very reminiscent of Wesley Dodds at the beginning of Kingdom Come. - Namor rising out of a wave to kill Nazis as if he were a force of nature was a very powerful image. - FDR knew about the Human Torch before he was publicly revealed? Holy conspiracy theories, Batman! - Professor Erskine was using Atlantean corpses while working on the super soldier for the Nazis? Sure, he later defects and gives the world Captain America but, to me, this taints Captain America. The process that led to his creation included mass murder and experiments on sentient beings. - Nick Fury was in England helping the war effort prior to the U.S. joining the conflict. He and a friend, Red, were helping to train English paratroopers and had been doing so for months prior to being recruited by Sam Sawyer to extract Erskinefrom Germany. Cool! - I feel like I should know who the narrator, Dr. Thomas Halloway, is but I can't place the name.

  • Thomas Halloway = The Golden Age Angel
  • I think Erskine was against the use of Namor's people and said so to the other German scientist...
  • But he still did it, Doc. It may have been under duress but he still did it.

And thanks, Baron! I thought the name was familiar but wasn't sure if it was someone Brubaker just made up or not.
  • I never thought for a moment that Erskine was anything other than a scientist who had defected from the Germany, so that particular revelation was more of a confirmation of a pet theory of mine than it was a shock or surprise (and before you ask, no, I don't hold Erskine responsible for Nazi atrocities). Lot's of EYKIWs in this first issue, some small, some bigger. Although it contradicts certain aspects of Marvels, Book One, I nevertheless think it complements it as well.
  • Now that this series has concluded, I read the whole thing start-to-finish this past weekend. I suppose the biggest “retcon” is revelation that [SPOILER] Pearl Harbor was part of a two-pronged attack against the United States. The other attack, on Washington, was thwarted by the superheroes (except the Human Torch and Toro who were fighting in Hawaii), but was hushed up by Captain America so as not to detract from the sacrifices made by U.S. servicemen at Pearl Harbor. This series also sets up the introduction of a modern day successor to Angel, the grandson of the original. [END SPOILER]

I followed up this series with Avengers/Invaders, but although I enjoyed them both, they didn’t mesh as well as I had hoped. The first is narrated from the point of view of the Two-Gun Kid, and the second from that of Bucky Barnes, but more important than that, the respective tone of the series is completely different. What does complement Avengers/Invaders much better, though, is the current Torch series, a follow-up of sorts, told from the point of view of Toro and featuring the original Human Torch as well. There’s one issue left to go in this series.
