The New Badger

Badger #1 was the only new comic I read yesterday. My expectations were perhaps unrealistically high, yet it did not disappoint. Mike Baron has re-told the Badger's origin story several times, but this is the first time he's updated it beyond its Vietnam era roots. His skill as a writer has obviously improved, and this may well turn out to be the best Badger ever. No prior knowledge of the previous series is necessary. Too bad it’s going to be only a five-issue min-series. Other than that, I couldn’t have been more pleased.

  • I'll look into this when I get to my LCS on Saturday. Despite having been reading comics when it was originally published -- and reading other comics from First at the time, like Jon Sable, Freelance -- I don't think I've ever read a Badger book.

  • Glad, to hear that, Jeff. I'm a long time time Badger fan. I'll look for it on Sunday perhaps.

  • The only Badger I've ever read is when he would guest-star in Nexus. I liked that, and I'm glad to hear that this new series sounds fantastic. I will definitely look for it the next time I'm in a shop.

  • I picked it up and got a chance to read it today. It was pretty good! I take it that this is a reboot of sorts? The story seems to be retelling his origin, and setting it in a more recent war.

  • Yes, a reboot. Norbert was originally a Vietnam veteran with multiple personality disorder and the ability to communicate with animals. Also a top flight martial artist.  I think I mentioned elsewhere that this is the first origin story of his I've read, however.

  • I'm glad to see there's so much interest in the new series.

My first exposure to the Badger was when he crossed over into Steve Englhart's Coyote. that was around issue #7 or so (of Badger). I picked up the back issues and have been reading ever since.

  • The fifth and final issue of the new Badger limited series shipped yesterday, yet the trade paperback collection shipped two weeks ago. I don't think I've seen that happen before.
