I recently picked up the so-called last issue of Amazing Spider-Man and I confess that the last time I was picking it up regularly was during the McFarlane run and prior to that it was the issues leading up to issue 200. I have not been the most faithful of reader, I fully admit. Anyways, this preamble leads me to my question: When did Spider-Man and J. Jonah Jameson become buddies and more importantly why? As I mentioned I picked up the anniversary issue and JJJ is sticking up for Spidey and in the more recent issues apparently he is even doing public appearances with him. OBVIOUSLY, I missed something big in the Spider-Universe.

  • Yes, there are a couple of things that have evolved here.

First, and most importantly, that's not Peter Parker in the Spider-man suit right now.  As we hit the big 700 anniversary issue, Doctor Octopus found a way to switch minds with Peter Parker, and so, as Doc Oct's body withered and died off, Doc Oct's brain patterns are in Peter's head and have taken on the role of "the Superior Spider-Man".  This change up is likely to last a year or so, as Doc not only learns the ropes of being a super-hero....no killing...be courteous...with great power...etc.

In the final big confrontation between "doc oct" and "Spidey" fighting for the lives of everyone Peter holds dear (Hostages Spidey rounded up and was holding in Avengers Tower to "keep safe") we saw "spidey cut loose" like he never has before... fighting against a group of doc oct's sinister six .... and punching the scorpion so hard that he tore his jaw off.

Among the assembled hostages have been Aunt May, JJJ and others.  Jameson is impressed/relieved to see Spidey fighting so hard for their survival, and decides maybe he's been wrong about him...that he's a true hero.  Jameson is also the mayor of the city at this point, having advanced from publisher of the Bugle several years earlier. (We've conveniently been spared his campaign when Spidey accidentally time-trips and jumps forward several months in a few minutes of our time. )

There's a bunch more of supporting characters, like JJJ's wife, and JJJ's father marrying Aunt May, and more that I'm not as well versed on, but it all made sense at the time.

Don't know if this helps much, but it gives you the idea that the set-up of the status quo has been changed.

Also, and I don't think this is that much of a SPOILER, but it's become pretty apparant that despite Peter having "died" in Doc Oct's decaying body, his consciousness is still rattling around in the new Spider-man's head, occassionally exerting himself and his control over Octo's choices and pulling him back from killing opponents.  This is probably going to be the Deus de Machina to reverse the current status quo at some point in the future, about a year down the pike. (Probably just in time for the newest Spider-Man movie's release...)

  • ...BTW , I believe this daddy of Jameson is the - now - biological " real " one , with the one shown in SPIDER-MAN'S TWISTED WEB (was that the book's title ?) a few years ago retconned as JJJ's STEPfather (was that story book-reprinted anywhere ??? Have Peter Bagge'sa Spider-Man and Hulk spoofs been , BTW ???) .

  • Emerkeith; the series was Tangled Webs, iirc.

  • Thanks all. I have to say that the change of opinion of ol' JJJ seems fairly abrupt after all the years of Spidey saving his (JJJ) ass and getting a boot in his (Spider-Man) for his troubles.

As far as the return of Peter. I had heard about the Superior Spider-Man revelations but I am kind of thinking that things might be a bit more abrupt than that. In one of the recent solicitations for Age of Ultron, it sounds like the MU is getting a Crisis on Infinite Earths (How's that for a sort of mixed metaphor) like reboot so I was thinking that is likely the carpet that Marvel will sweep any unwanted changes under (like returning the original X-Men to their own time with no memories of their futures while still allowing the future versions to remember)
  • ...A belated thnk you , Benn .

How many mayors of New York City have there been in Marvel continuity - especially " real " Marvel , FF#1 onward (although I suppose that hardly needs to said , and I suppose that's what " talking about Marvel's continuity/timeline " - essentially , anyway - automatically refers to) - especially considering that I suppose Marvel would be especially prone to have " election " stories in Presidential election years but New York City has it mayoral elections in the odd-numbered year AFTER the Prez year ????? (Not alone there , either , Chicago and San Francisco have their big guy elections on odd years , tho' mebbe a different schedule - Do you think that's " to get more attention/to focus on the Mayoral race " when neither the Prez - nor the House , or Senate , or (I guess) State Governor is being decided ?????????)

THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN B&W , in 1968 , had an election for NY mayor - Then , when that story was reprinted , colorized and with added , new and modern-Marvel-correct material therein , in 1972 (Perhaps that could be at some dividing line between 60s Marvel and beyond if any fan - Or , Marvel itself - decided to do so ?????) , there was another NYC Big Guy 'lec...........Did any versions of (much-publicized/rather publicity hounds-whores) later NYC mayors Koch or Guliani - or Bloomberg , telling people to PUT THOSE DAMN BIG GULPS DOWN !!!!!!!!!!! - ever appear ?

Emerkeith, I wish I could answer your question, but I can't even decipher it.

  • ...I pointed out past stories revolving around a mayoral election in Fun City (tending to fall in Presidential election years , which , in fact , are a year before N.Y.C. Mayor-electing years .) .

      How many ???????

  • I've seen stories (usually in ASM or Marvel Team-Up) where a reference is made to the real life mayor of NYC.  JJJ, as far as I can recall, is the first fictional NYC mayor who is also a major supporting character in the Marvel Universe.

  • I can't buy JJJ being elected mayor in the first place, not with all the skeletons in his closet.

And his son is a WEREWOLF! Geez, where's The Post when you really need 'em?

  • ...A SPACE werewolf , dammit !!!!!!!!!!!

And Morbius is a SCIENTIFIC vampire :-)...........
