BREAK OUT #1

Story: Zack Kaplan | Art: Wilton Santos | Covers: Adam Gorham, Rafael Albuquerque | $3.99

When massive cube spaceships from another dimension materialize over our cities and routinely abduct teenagers to be held inside their mysterious floating prisons, Liam Watt's younger brother, Tommy, is taken. But while governments and adults across the world accept this loss as inevitable, Liam refuses to give up hope. Now, in a "take back our future" anthem, Liam assembles a skilled team of ordinary high school students to risk it all — but can they pull off the impossible and succeed in an out-of-this-world prison break?

Join the crew and unlock a sci-fi adventure like no other, written by rising comics star Zack Kaplan (Port of Earth, Join the Future), with kinetic art-buzzing with life-drawn by Wilton Santos (Excalibur, Dawn of X) and colored by Jason Wordie (God Country, Wasted Space).

ERRAND BOYS TPB

Story: D.J. Kirkbride | Art/Cover: Nikos Koutsis| $19.99

Errand Boys by D.J. Kirkbride (The Once and Future Queen, Never Ending), Nikos Koutsis (Invincible, Savage Dragon), and Frank Cvetkovic (Cyberpunk 2077: Trauma Team, The House) is being collected at Dark Horse Comics for the first time ever.

A runner for a shady errand — and sometimes shifty smuggling — service finds an unexpected partner in his half-human, teenage half-brother!

In the future, a decent job is tough to find, especially if you’re a hard-worn scoundrel with commitment issues. But there’s one position that’s always open — an errand runner. Jace is a lifelong solo act handling miscellaneous tasks that are often dangerous, and rarely legal, for the most questionable of clients. But when his 13-year-old half-human half-brother comes to live with him, he’s got two mouths to feed and this is the only one way he knows how to put money on the table. Between evading the law, running from angry aliens, and jumping off skyscrapers, can Jace survive being a big brother? Navigating to the furthest depths of the solar system, the only thing weirder than the vastness of space is family.

You can outrun monsters, but you can’t outrun duty!

Collects Errand Boys #1-5. Praise for Errand Boys:

“An entertaining, galactic story that will be sure to please science fiction fans.” — Fanbase Press

“A must-read if you are a lover of comics, the cosmos, or just enjoy great art and writing. Beautifully executed panel after panel, this story has a lot of potential and momentum going forward.” — The Brazen Bull

“A bombastic, sci-fi story wrapped in themes of family and loss. Koutsis' art is energetic and Kirkbride's writing manages to balance some nice humour with the stories dark undertones.” — Comicbook.com

FLASHPOINT BEYOND #0

Story: Geoff Johns | Art: Eduardo Risso | Covers: Dexter Soy, Eduardo Risso, Max Dunbar, Todd Nauck | 48 pages | $5.99

Batman has some questions. “Why is Deathstroke not acting like Deathstroke?” and “What’s Beyond the Omniverse?” To help him find the answers, he turns to the two people that you never turn to for help, Mime and Marionette.

Over 10 years have passed since the earth-shattering, timeline-changing event known as FLASHPOINT hit comic book stands. On April 12, legendary writer Geoff Johns will come back to the alternative world he created in the six-issue miniseries FLASHPOINT BEYOND.

Kicking off the event is the 48-page FLASHPOINT BEYOND #0 featuring artwork by Eduardo Risso (100 BULLETS). After sacrificing everything to help The Flash put the universe back together and save Bruce Wayne’s life, Thomas Wayne wakes up in a world he thought was no more. Forced to don the cowl once again, Batman prowls the streets of Gotham City searching for answers to how this world still exists, but what he starts to uncover will send him hurtling around the globe. The hunt for the Clockwork Killer starts here!

“Collaborating with Eduardo has been a dream my entire career,” said writer Geoff Johns. “The chance to work on a story with such an iconic and legendary artist, centered around the troubled Thomas Wayne, made returning to the world of Flashpoint and its vengeful Batman special. Our goal was to create an event that’s every bit as emotional as it is epic, not only revealing the how’s and why’s of Thomas Wayne’s returning timeline but what it means to the past, present and future of Bruce Wayne and DC. We hope readers enjoy the ride.”

"Embarking on a new journey with the caped crusader is always a challenge, but working with Geoff has made the whole process a true delight,” said artist Eduard Risso. “I'm certain that if audiences all around the world have as much fun reading it as I had drawing it, they're in for one hell of a ride."

“Everyone working on these books is giving it their all to deliver something that is worth the readers’ time in this competitive landscape of entertainment,” said Johns. “This is for fans of big DC events and the great history of DC when it comes to comic books. And even though this is an event, it’s focused on character over concept — it’s the story of Thomas Wayne Batman, a Barry Allen that could’ve been, the crimes of Bruce Wayne — it’s a murder mystery, a secret mission and a look into the past, present and future of the continuum of DC. And as dark as it can get in this upside down world of FLASHPOINT, it’s fun.”

A preview of the first five pages of FLASHPOINT BEYOND #0 were available in all DC periodicals on March 29 and April 5.

Fans can read all of the issues of the original FLASHPOINT, including the comics that led to the timeline changing event (THE FLASH #8-12), as part of their paid DC UNIVERSE INFINITE subscription.

FARMHAND #16

Story: Rob Guillory | Art/Cover: Rob Guillory, Jean-Francois Beaulieu | $3.99

Eisner Award winning cartoonist Rob Guillory (Chew) returns with an all new story arc to the agricultural horror series Farmhand. The fourth story arc kicks off from Image Comics with issue #16 on sale this April.

In Farmhand #16, The Jedidiah Seed now grows in the wild. Their farm in ruins, the Jenkins family tries to cobble together a path forward in a world ruled by the demonic Monica Thorne.

“A lot's happened since the last issue of Farmhand, in the world of the Jenkins Farm and in our own," said Guillory. "And I couldn’t be happier to finally bring to life what I believe will be the darkest, most intense chapter of this strange little story yet. Buckle up."

In the series Farmhand, Jedidiah Jenkins is a simple farmer. But his cash crop isn’t corn or soy. He grows fast-healing, highly-customizable human organs. For years, Jed’s organic transplants have brought healing to many, but deep in the soil of the Jenkins Family Farm something sinister has taken root. Today this dark seed will begin to sprout, and the Jenkins family will be the first to taste its bitter fruit.

  • New story arc. I'm not reading this series, so let me know if you are, and what it is you like.

THE GHOST IN YOU: A RECKLESS BOOK HC

Story: Ed Brubaker | Art: Jacob Phillips | Art/Cover: Sean Phillips | $24.99

Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips' bestselling Reckless books just won't quit, as the award winning crime noir masters bring us yet another original graphic novel starring troublemaker-for-hire Ethan Reckless in The Ghost in You. It will land on shelves this April from Image Comics and join Reckless, Friend of the Devil and Destroy All Monsters in this original graphic novel series.

"The reaction to me and Sean switching to original graphic novels has been amazing, and it's pushed us creatively, too," said Brubaker. "After watching Anna grow over the first three books in the Reckless series, I couldn't stop thinking about doing a book with her as the lead, working her own case. And it's a case that lets me dive back into some of my own obsessions, like famous crime scene houses and TV horror hosts of the '60s and '70s. This is one strange mystery that Anna finds herself in the middle of."

In The Ghost in You, it’s the winter of 1989 and Ethan is out of town — so this time, Anna has to tackle the job on her own. When a movie scream queen asks her to prove the mansion she’s renovating isn’t haunted, Anna will stumble into the decades-long mystery of one of Hollywood’s most infamous murder houses … a place with many dark secrets — some of which might just kill her.

Phillips added: "It’s only taken 40 years, but the Reckless books have helped me find my rhythm drawing comics. One hundred thirty-two pages straight through without having to stop every month on an artificial cliff-hanger to draw a cover means I get to do my best work on an explosive story. Graphic novels are the future, and this is our best one yet!"

Another surefire hit from the award winning creators behind Pulp, My Heroes Have Always Been Junkies, Criminal and The Fade Out — and a must-have for all Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips fans.

Select praise for Reckless series:

“Oh man this book pushed EVERY crime fiction button for me. Working class setting covering up for a deeper societal rot, a battered, damaged (literally) protagonist against the beast and all of it squirming and lunging through an over-lit early '80s L.A. Noir bleached to bleakness. Bliss." — Patton Oswalt

"... the sharp cultural references, bone-deep knowledge of the Southland, and pulsing through line of righteous heroism will make readers eager for Ethan’s next reluctant adventure." — Publishers Weekly

"... I loved everything about Destroy All Monsters. But I think what might need to be said more than anything is that this is a story I feel compelled to sit with and discuss." — Comics Bookcase

“Imagine Redford at his peak, ambling through sun-drenched, '80s L.A. in a serpentine plot that is equal parts Long Goodbye and Point Break. No one does crime fic like Brubaker and Phillips and their collaboration has never felt more new. Explosive. Vital. And yes ... reckless. I love this book.” — Damon Lindelof, Lost, HBO’s Watchmen

"You have to wonder what this series will actually become, as it might not be the thing we thought it was. It's definitely better." — Comic Book Couples Counseling

IMAGE 30TH ANNVERSARY ANTHOLOGY #1 (OF 12)

Story: Geoff Johns, Declan Shalvey, Wyatt Kennedy, Skottie Young, Mirka Andolfo, Brenden Fletcher, Kyle Higgins | Art: Andrea Mutti, Declan Shalvey, Luana Vecchio, Mirka Andolfo, Erica Henderson, Daniele Di Nicuolo (CA) Marcello Costa, Igor Monti | $5.99

Celebrate the 30th anniversary of Image Comics with the upcoming anthology series Image! kicking off in April. This 12-issue series will treat readers to all-new stories from some of the biggest and best names in comics.

Edited by Image Comics' Publisher Eric Stephenson and featuring a combination of ongoing serials and standalone short stories, Image! will be the cannot-miss event of the year.

This first issue will showcase a combination of ongoing serials and standalone short stories, including the first chapters of two 12-part stories, “The Blizzard” by Geoff Johns and Andrea Mutti, as well as the opening installments of a trio of three-parters: “Gospel for a New Century” by Wyatt Kennedy and Luana Vecchio, “Hopeless” by Mirka Andolfo, and “Shift” by Kyle Higgins and Daniele Di Nicuolo. Readers will also be treated to an exclusive first look at Declan Shalvey’s upcoming Old Dog series, an original ongoing comic strip by Skottie Young, and more.

“There's no better testament to what Image is all about than the incredible talent we work with, so an anthology featuring an amazing assortment of those artists, writers, colorists, and letterers seemed like a no-brainer,” said Stephenson. “We literally would not exist without the creators we publish, and Image! is a celebration of their unbridled creativity.”

The series will also boast the talents of such comics powerhouses as, Brenden Fletcher, W. Maxwell Prince, Martín Morazzo, Robert Kirkman, Cory Walker, Ed Brubaker, Sean Phillips, Tim Seeley, Bryan Lee O'Malley, Leslie Hung, Joe Casey, Nathan Fox, Zoe Thorogood, Maria Lovett, Jay Faerber, Matt Fraction, Fábio Moon, Gabriel Bá, Kelly Sue DeConnick, Emma Ríos, James Tynion IV, Kieron Gillen and many more.

A TOWN CALLED TERROR #1

Story: Steve Niles | Art/Cover: Szymon Kudranski  | Variant: Tony S. Daniel & Kudrański | $3.99

Masters of the macabre Steve Niles (30 Days of Night) and Szymon Kudrański (Spawn, The Punisher) present new cutting-edge horror in the upcoming, A Town Called Terror.

"I’ve always wanted to create a 'world of horror' — meaning there would be very little of the real world, or humans, in the story — and I’ve had that chance with Szymon. During the pandemic he and I have been creating a new world of horror and A Town Called Terror is the first installment. I’m thrilled with what we came up with and thrilled to be working with Image," said Niles. “I worked with Szymon when he was just starting out and I’ve been wanting to work with him again ever since. He’s an amazing talent and an incredible storyteller. It has been an absolute blast creating A Town Called Terror with him.”

In A Town Called Terror, Henry West is brutally kidnapped in the middle of the night while his wife Julie watches, terrified. Henry awakens to the reality of his whereabouts, but Julie, with no evidence of the phantom crime, is unable to get help to search for him.

"For years, Steve and I had planned to create more books together. When he initially asked what I wanted to draw, I mentioned that I visualised a 'city or town ...' and Steve added, '... of monsters! Of terror!' From the get-go we knew this one would be something else in terms of collaboration," said Kudrański. "We let both our creativity melt into this single project and finished the first story arc in three short months! Reading Steve's scripts is like watching a movie — it's very easy for me to picture visually. In terms of style, we decide to stick close to the classic monsters of the '40s-'80s era. At first, we kept to a standard 22-page format ...  but I ended up stretching some scenes, adding art for cinematic effect in order to bring Steve dialogue out of the frame and help the art jump out of the pages. In the end, we ended up settling on an oversized series, with each issue running to 26-30 pages. The biggest challenge was deciding how to get every monster we know to coexist in one 'place' and 'story.' Steve came up with some great ideas and I hope readers will be as pleased as I am!"

A Town Called Terror mirrors the dark, paranormal tones of Midnight Mass but with the criminal machinations of Ozark and is a must-read for horror fans to add to their wish lists.

X-MEN ‘92: HOUSE OF XCII #1 (OF 5)

Story:  Steve Foxe | Art: Salva Espin | Cover: David Baldeón | Teen | $3.99

In 2019, Jonathan Hickman revolutionized the mutant mythos with the hit series HOUSE OF X. But what would it look like if the Krakoan age was ushered in decades earlier? Find out this April when writer Steve Foxe and artist Salva Espin reimagine this modern mutant milestone in X-MEN ’92: HOUSE OF XCII!

This limited series will see the return of the X-Men’s beloved ‘90s incarnations as they tackle the groundbreaking beats of HOUSE OF X! Known for his ingenuous work on titles like SPIDER-HAM and RAINBOW BRIDGE, Foxe makes his exciting X-Men debut with this clever twist that will delight X-Fans new and old. And Espin, whose eye-catching art graced the pages of DEADPOOL: SECRET AGENT DEADPOOL, is ready to bring back the pouches, bomber jackets and all the explosive awesomeness that made the X-Men’s 90s heyday so iconic!

Mutantkind is taking a huge leap forward by founding their own nation on the island of Krakoa, guided by Professor X, Magneto and a mysterious long-lived woman who knows more than she should. … But this won’t be the story you know. Expect the unexpected as the action, secrets and high stakes drama that made HOUSE OF X such a masterpiece are shaken up in a totally new way!

“One of my earliest memories is of buying a Garrison Kane action figure, complete with ‘snap-back living hand,’ so to say that the ‘90s X-Men comics had a big impact on my development is an understatement,” Foxe said. “Getting the opportunity to pay tribute to such an important era in mutant history 30 years later — and to remix the franchise-redefining work currently being done by creators like Jonathan Hickman, Tini Howard and Gerry Duggan — is the definition of a “dream gig,” especially with some of the WILD deviations we’re taking from the source material. If I died tomorrow, I’d be happy … but please resurrect me ASAP on Krakoa.”

"I started collecting comics with the X-Men in the '90s. The character designs of this era have always been the most attractive and powerful to me,” Espin said. “Those comics and the animated series made my imagination fly and very soon I began to make illustrations and mini comics as a fan that I shared with my schoolmates. These were the first drawings that encouraged me to pursue the dream of becoming a comic artist. With this book, we intend to pay tribute to that powerful era that was the 90s. The moment when super heroes looked better than ever with colorful tight-fitting spandex.”

  • First issue!
  • This is going to have a powerful nostalgic pull for people of a certain age. However, I'm not one of those people, and am not nostalgic at all for pouches and bomber jackets.
  • And hold on: Was Magneto already redeemed in the 1992 cartoon (as he seems part of the team on the cover), or do we just take that for granted now? Because he was still a bad guy in the comics at least through the Grant Morrison run, which was in the early 'noughts.

ALFRED HITCHCOCK MASTER OF SUSPENSE HC

By Noël Simsolo, Dominique Hé | NBM | 320 pages | $44.99

1960, the film Psycho traumatized viewers around the world. Never before had the angst or the suspense been so well presented in cinema. But where does the talent of this Alfred Hitchcock come from, the one now nicknamed the "Master of Suspense"?

To find out, we must first go back to his youth, in England, during the first half of the 20th century. Having grown up in a Catholic family — a religious originality that will be felt in a large part of his cinema — “Hitch” is an atypical Englishman who, very early on, has a taste for telling stories. The temptation to work for the cinema will not be long in coming, first as a graphic designer at Islington Studios in London where his visual talent will lead him to make his debut behind the camera, as an assistant and then as a full director. It is also here that he will meet Alma Reville, his assistant and wife who will accompany him throughout his storied career, including the jump to the big time in Hollywood.
Discover the life of undoubtedly one of the greatest filmmakers of all time. The story of a colorful, demanding and quite simply extraordinary artist.

Emily is a law enforcement teacher who suffers from an anxiety disorder. Actual law enforcement isn't performed by people, with automatons having replaced humans. In Emily's world, humanity discovered that consciousness occupies multiple dimensions. Technology has allowed them to digitally house minds. This is referred to as "Hopping" which became illegal after it was proved that the minds that hop begin to suffer and go into a heightened state of panic. Every individual is connected to Geodesics — a powerful AI which converses with each person and guides their decisions. Geodesics is present everywhere, lending it near omnipresence, yet it is not conscious in the same way humans are. The Manifold is an anti-Geodesics organization. Their goal is to free people from AI, aiming to create an autonomy within the city which is devoid of Geodesics. The Manifold uses hopping to accomplish its goals. Once a copy of a mind is created, Geodesics is unable to locate the physical body associated with it and is forced to send law enforcement teachers after the hoppers. When Emily is called upon to locate a hopper, she fails to apprehend him due to an unknown force used by The Manifold. Tim sees the whole scene from an apartment window. He is an Architecture teacher. Actual architecture is a profession which no longer exists, being taken over by AI and automatons as well. The story follows Emily and Tim from their points of view as The Manifold plays a key role in shaping their future. Freedom of choice itself hangs in the balance as the forces of the technological world and biological mysteries collide.

Rotante along with the amazing art team of Erin Hunting, Adrian Ropp, and Agnes Garbowska.

Archie Comics is reviving a fan-favorite series from the archives in a hilarious modern-style reboot this April with the launch of FUN WITH LITTLE ARCHIE AND FRIENDS SPECIAL #1. The one-shot comic updates the “little” versions of Archie Andrews and the Riverdale gang who have thrilled young readers since their debut in 1956 with a star-studded collection of contemporary comics talent. FUN WITH LITTLE ARCHIE & FRIENDS will release the same month as a graphic novel collection of the acclaimed BITE-SIZED ARCHIE web comic series for a double-helping of all-ages fun as only Archie Comics can deliver!

"Little Archie has been an integral part of our publishing history and we wanted to revisit the franchise with modern storytellers and sensibilities,” said Archie Comics Senior Director of Editorial Jamie L. Rotante. “Coupled with the first print collection of our extremely popular BITE SIZED ARCHIE web comic, these books are fun jumping-on points for readers of any age, but they're also part of our larger plans for the continued growth and expansion of the Archie Comics brand."

LITTLE ARCHIE character designs by Erin Hunting

The FUN WITH LITTLE ARCHIE & FRIENDS one-shot anthology features contributions by writers Shannon Watters (Lumberjanes), J. Torres (Teen Titans Go!), and Rotante (Betty & Veronica: Vixens) and artists Erin Hunting (The Tooth Fairy Vs Santa), Adrian Ropp (Casper the Friendly Ghost), and Agnes Garbowska (DC Super Hero Girls) in a wild fantasy story that dives into the world of video games and table top adventures. Beyond the usual fan-favorites like Little Archie, Little Jughead, Little Betty & Veronica, and Little Sabrina, an assortment of beloved characters will be making their "Little" debuts including Cheryl Blossom, Toni Topaz, Harper Lodge, and more!

LITTLE ARCHIE character designs by Adrian Ropp

“ARCHIE has been a cornerstone of my comics-loving heart since I was a Little Shannon, and I'm so jazzed to see someone as magnificently talented as Erin bring my hijinks for the gang to glorious four-color life!” said writer Shannon Watters, who makes their Archie Comics debut in this anthology.

LITTLE ARCHIE character designs by Agnes Garbowska

J. Torres, no stranger to the Little Archie franchise having just written a story in December's ARCHIE HOLIDAY MAGIC SPECIAL, adds, “Out of all of the stories I've had the privilege of writing for Archie Comics over the years, the Little Archie ones end up being my favorites. I even got to work with the legendary Bob Bolling on one of them! So, when Jamie approached me about this one-shot, I was 100% on board from the jump!”

Animal Avatar designs by Erin Hunting

The anthology will feature vibrant and energetic artwork from artists both familiar and new to Archie Comics fans, including animation veterans Adrian Ropp and Erin Hunting as well as Ringo Award-winning artist Agnes Garbowska. Longtime Archie colorist Matt Herms and letterer Jack Morelli round out the creative team of this all-new special.

"What an incredible experience it is working with Archie Comics!" said artist Erin Hunting. "I feel so connected to the characters, it’s almost like I’ve grown up alongside them since the moment I picked up my first issue as a little kid. To go from cutting out Archie strips in the Sunday morning newspaper to having the opportunity to draw Archie and the gang, it's like I’ve come full circle!"

The co-release with BITE-SIZED ARCHIE represents an effort by Archie Comics to reach younger readers and expand the brand's footprint in entertainment beyond the world of print comics, Rotante explains. "There are new and exciting avenues to pursue in the world of child-appropriate entertainment, including animation, and we want to explore the possibilities there by doing what Archie Comics has always done best: incorporating pop culture trends, mixing in a dash of action and adventure with some hints of sci-fi and the supernatural, and — most importantly — delivering a healthy dose of fun and humor as only we can do!"

MR. LIGHTBULB GN

Story/Art/Cover: Wojtek Wawszczyk | Fantagraphics | $29.99

In this electrifying graphic novel debut, Polish animator and cartoonist Wojtek Wawszczyk uses magical realism to tell a moving tale of finding light in a life full of darkness.

Mirroring the world we live in, the protagonist of this graphic novel comes from a broken home. However, in this case, the term is quite literal. Due to freak accidents at the steelworks where his parents work, his mom snapped in half, and his dad flattened like a pancake. As if that wasn't enough to deal with, one day, he suffers his own life-changing experience: mistakenly swallowing molten metal gives him the strange power to radiate heat and light - like a lightbulb. As he grows up, evolving from Bulb Boy to Mr. Lightbulb, he finds that his unique abilities can be a curse and a blessing; while they alienate him from others, they also allow him to shine.

At once surrealist, comedic, heartbreaking, bitterly sarcastic, and deeply sincere, Mr. Lightbulb is an essential work of comics autobio. With bold, expressive ink strokes and brilliant use of visual metaphor, Wojtek Wawszczyk renders an affecting self-portrait, as his protagonist balances challenging family dynamics with his creative ambitions and desire to forge his way in the world. This book, which clocks in at over 600 pages, combines a grand scope with brisk plotting, adding up to a tour de force of artistry and honesty.

SQUEAK THE MOUSE HC

Story/Art/Cover: Massimo Mattioli | Fantagraphics | 152 pages | $29.99

An outrageously cruel cat versus a wily mouse: a rivalry as old as time, popularized by the beloved Tom and Jerry cartoons of the '40s and '50s. In the hands of renowned Italian cartoonist Massimo Mattioli, however, this classic premise is infused with a whole new perverse and anarchic energy. Laying full-on slasher horror onto wacky cartoon violence, Mattioli's characters embark on a sadistic bloodthirsty rampage, leaving a trail of mangled corpses and pools of blood in their wake. And the comic's gratuitous bloodshed is not to be overshadowed by its crude humor and over-the-top sexcapades. In sum, a tour de force of unrelenting transgression, rendered in clean line art and dazzling pastel colors.

Conceived in the early '80s, Squeak the Mouse was originally serialized in the Italian underground comics magazine Frigidaire to much acclaim. This silent comic series gained notoriety in the US when customs agents seized a shipment of Mattioli's books; deemed pornographic, the work was subsequently made the subject of an obscenity trial (which was won by the publisher). Best known today as the precursor to the Itchy and Scratchy characters in The Simpsons, this cult classic comic series is finally coming back into print in a gorgeous and affordable hardcover.

TEN DAYS IN A MAD-HOUSE: A GRAPHIC ADAPTATION GN

Story: Brad Ricca | Art: Courtney Sieh | Gallery 13 | $19.99

Beautifully adapted and rendered through piercing illustrations by acclaimed creators Brad Ricca and Courtney Sieh, Nellie Bly's complete, true-to-life 19th-century investigation of Blackwell Asylum captures a groundbreaking moment in history and reveals a haunting and timely glimpse at the starting point for conversations on mental health.

"I said I could and I would. And I did."

While working for Joseph Pulitzer's newspaper in 1887, Nellie Bly began an undercover investigation into the local Women's Lunatic Asylum on Blackwell Island. Intent on seeing what life was like on the inside, Bly fooled trained physicians into thinking she was insane — a task too easily achieved — and had herself committed. In her 10 days at the asylum, Bly witnessed horrifying conditions: The food was inedible, the women were forced into labor for the staff, the nurses and doctors were cruel or indifferent, and many of the women held there had no mental disorder of any kind.

Now adapted into graphic novel form by Brad Ricca and vividly rendered with beautiful and haunting illustrations by Courtney Sieh, Bly's bold venture is given new life and meaning. Her fearless investigation into the living conditions at the Blackwell Asylum forever changed the field of journalism. A timely reminder to take notice of forgotten populations, Ten Days in a Mad-House warns us what happens when we look away.

ANY GUN CAN PLAY: AN ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO EURO-WESTERNS HC

    10266823267?profile=RESIZE_710xStory: Kevin Grant | Fab Press | $59.95

"THE EURO-WESTERN BEYOND LEONE — The full, vibrant history of the Euro-Western, offering everything any fan of Euro-Westerns could ever want to know. The success of Sergio Leone's Dollars trilogy in the 60s sparked a gold rush, as a legion of European filmmakers, many of them sharing the get-rich-quick mentality of Leone's mercenary anti-heroes, followed the master's lead to create some of the wildest Westerns ever made.

Cynical and stylish, bloody and baroque, Euro-Westerns replaced straight-shooting sheriffs and courageous cowboys with amoral adventurers, whose murderous methods would shock the heroes of Hollywood Westerns. Any Gun Can Play explores the films' wider reaches, their recurrent themes, characters, quirks and motifs. It examines the American models and explores the mechanics of the Italian film industry.

Features the genre's leading lights, including Franco Nero, Giuliano Gemma and Gianni Garko, writer Sergio Donati, and directors Sergio Sollima and Giuliano Carnimeo — Foreword by Euro-Western legend Franco Nero

Despite her supposed ineptitude with regular magic, Princess Anisphia defies the aristocracy's expectations by developing "magicology," a unique magical theory based on memories from her past life. One day, she witnesses the brilliant noblewoman Euphyllia unjustly stripped of her title as the kingdom's next monarch. That's when Anisphia concocts a plan to help Euphyllia regain her good name-which somehow involves them living together and researching magic!  Little do these two ladies know, however, that their chance encounter will alter not only their own futures, but those of the kingdom ... and the entire world!

STILL JUST A GEEK ANNOTATED MEMOIR HC

    10266923884?profile=RESIZE_710xWil Wheaton | William Morrow | $28.99

Celebrated actor, personality, and all-around nerd, Wil Wheaton updates his memoir of collected blog posts with all new material and annotations as he reexamines one of the most interesting lives in Hollywood and fandom-and now for the first time in audio, narrated by Wil himself!

From starring in Stand by Me to playing Wesley Crusher on Star Trek: The Next Generation to playing himself in his second (third?) iconic role of Evil Wil Wheaton in The Big Bang Theory, to becoming a social media supernova, Wil Wheaton has charted a career course unlike anyone else, and has emerged as one of the most popular and well-respected names in science fiction, fantasy and pop culture.

Back in 2001, Wil began blogging on wilwheaton.net. Believing himself to have fallen victim to the curse of the child actor, Wil felt relegated to the convention circuit, and didn't expect many would want to read about his random experiences and personal philosophies.

Yet, much to his surprise, people were reading. He still blogs, and has an enormous presence online.
In Still Just a Geek, Wil revisits his 2004 collection of blog posts, Just a Geek, filled with insightful and often laugh-out-loud annotated comments, additional later writings, and all new material written for this publication. The result is an incredibly raw and honest memoir, in which Wil opens up about his life, about falling in love, coming to grips with a stagnant career he did not choose, overcoming and healing childhood abuse, and the search for creative and emotional fulfillment as a storyteller. From his times on the Enterprise, to his struggles with anxiety, depression, and PTSD, to his starting a family and embracing his passion — writing — Wil Wheaton's journey is an inspiring and empowering tale, a story of finding one's true purpose that should resonate with fans and aspiring artists alike.

    • Wil Wheaton has shown himself to be such a cool dude that I feel guilty for hating Wesley Crusher all those years ago.

  • IMAGE 30TH ANNIVERARY: Unless I am mistaken Image has yet to complete their 20th anniversary series. Pass.

MARVEL HCs: It looks as if three of those seven Marvel collections I've been waiting on will ship this week.

X-MEN '92: I'm not one of those people who has a strong nostalgic pull for this era of X-Men, either. In fact, I had already dropped all of Marvel's X-titles, not to return until the Morrison era (after which i left again). But sometimes I like to sample books of this nature and try to pretend I'm picking up more-or-less where I left off. It doesn't usually work out that way. And besides, such experiments usually depend on a "light week", and if I'm buying three HCs on Wednesday, this ain't gonna be it.

"I sure hope these magazine facsimiles are included in the HCs somewhere, since that's what I buy from PS Artbooks."

I know how you feel. That's how I feel about the "softees" (although I did make an exception for Dick Briefer's Frankenstein). Regarding the magazine facsimiles, I don't think they're ever going to be collected because 1) they're  too big, and 2) there aren't enough issues of the series they've published so far to justify it (unless maybe they grouped a bunch of random ones together). The facsimiles are a nice package, but frankly I think they're too expensive. (I wanna say $15 or something like that...? I'm looking at one now but the price is in "bar code" only.) They have cardstock covers with a "PS Artbooks Presents" border. Underneath the outer cover is a full-size glossy cover (i.e., no border) just like the originals. They are printed on bright white archival paper and the art reproduces great!

"Wil Wheaton has shown himself to be such a cool dude that I feel guilty for hating Wesley Crusher all those years ago."

I think my favorite Wil Wheaton character is the fictional version of himself he played on The Big Bang Theory.

    "OGN!" - Calm down.

  • Also shipping this week:

  • Diamond doesn't list the Unusual Tales HC, and PS Artbooks' website lists it as "December 2021" and available for order. Where did you see that it's coming out this week? Obviously, I need to expand my sources!

  • Cap, I check three different sources each week in order to find out what's shipping: your "This Week in Comics", my own LCS's site, plus I google "new comics this week" (wherever that takes me), and I still don't necessarily get a complete or accurate list. There are often discrepancies between one list and another, and whatever doesn't ship the week it's supposed to according to one list usually ships the next. All this and I still don't have a reliable source for Marvel and DC hardcovers

In answer to your question, I saw those two PS Artbooks listed on my own shop's site which is updated directly from Diamond and is usually accurate for what will be shipping to my shop. I used to check my shop's site pretty much exclusively pre-COVID, but now, because Marvel and DC are doing their own distribution thing, my shop's site doesn't list anything not shipping via Diamond.

  • Hmmm. I need to find a way to find those issues which Diamond doesn't list but ships anyway, possibly as a reorder or just late. That's a head-scratcher. But I do want to be as comprehensive (and accurate) as possible. Maybe my LCS can help. I'll see if their list has Uncanny Tales on it.

Also, the "Voyagers of the Deep" book is listed in this week's "This Week;" it's technically Pre-Code Classic Adventure Stories Vol. 4. I didn't draw any attention to it because A) it's not a first issue; and B) PS Artbooks didn't send me any PR. In those circumstances, my normal thinking is "Well, by volume 4 those who want it know all they need to know about it, so all I really need to do is list that it's shipping." But if it's helpful to anyone to post what PR I can find on reprints that I know some Legionnaires are collecting, I will do so. I want to make this list as useful as possible, or otherwise why do it?

In fact, if anyone wants to list the books, miniseries, collections or whatever they're collecting, I'll draw attention to any new issues every week. That is to say, if you were collecting, say, The Last Book You'll Ever Read, and I knew that you were, I'd have drawn attention to every issue, not just the first.

  • I had to stop and readjust my suspenders of disbelief at the phrase "skilled team of ordinary high school students." - Well it doesn't specify what skill. In high school I was pretty skilled out of making the "water drop" sound with my mouth. I can still do it just not as good, as I'm out of practice. Maybe there is someone else who can fart on command...

THE GHOST IN YOU: A RECKLESS BOOK HC - I am definitely getting this. Pretty much anytime someone asks for recommendations on the rare occasions I work at my LCS. I always say, "Anything by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips"

IMAGE 30TH ANNVERSARY ANTHOLOGY #1 (OF 12) - I'm actually kind of excited for this. Unlike the 20th anniversary series, these creators have a better record of being on time.

DANCING AT PITY THE PARTY GN - Jesus, this sounds depressing.

KAIJU SCORE: STEAL FROM THE GODS #1 - The first series was good, and everyone should check it out. I'm on board for this

LINKS GN - I was kinda hoping this was about the golf and the British Open.

  • A lot of recent memoirs, especially those about growing up gay, are really depressing. One recent one was named My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness. But straight stories can be super-sad too, like The Butchery. I'm not sure what the audience is for this. Goth teens? Life is sad enough without seeking out sad stories from other people.

I'll make sure to highlight Kaiju Score when it ships, Trav.

  • I've been waiting for a Reckless omnibus, but man, it's hard to wait for Brubaker/Phillips. I might break down and get all four HCs from Amazon.

Well, heck. I'm beating you to it.

I think hearing about, reading about or seeing on TV people who have the same feelings as they do helps to inoculate teens and preteens against suicide.

Ever since I heard this joke on SiriusXM I've been wanting to pass it along: Regarding Florida's "Don't Say Gay" bill, disc jockey Pat StJohn said that when they play a Marvin Gay song in Florida they just have to say .... Marvin."
