Injustice: Year Zero #1-3 (Aug. 11)

DC proudly announces the launch of its newest Digital First series, Injustice: Year Zero! Publishing twice monthly and spanning 14 chapters, the first three chapters are available to read immediately as a bundle for $2.49 when purchased at readDC and comixology.com, or individually for $0.99 on all participating digital platforms!

Injustice: Year Zero returns fans to the world of DC’s bestselling Injustice: Gods Among Us; back to a time before Superman punched the Joker through the heart and became the fascist ruler of Injustice!

“Year Zero isn't as morally grey as what comes after,” said Tom Taylor in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “This is Superman and Batman at the peak of their friendship. Lois and Clark as a team. The Justice League united, and the Justice Society as a shining example for all. Of course, by its very nature, there's going to be tragedy and shocks and deaths, but there will be hope, there will be triumph, there will be love with the loss and heart alongside the hurt.”

Taylor’s prequel story in Injustice: Year Zero, “Fall of the Old Gods,” focuses the action around the Justice League and the discovery of how their predecessors covertly fought within WWII to bring down a tyrant. When the Joker finds a way to control DC’s Super Heroes, he uses his leverage to sabotage the Justice League—and the JSA—from the inside!

Injustice: Year Zero Chapters One through Three, written by Tom Taylor with Rogê Antônio, Cian Tormey, Rain Beredo and Wes Abbott on art, are available for purchase now on participating digital platforms, including readdc.com, Comixology, Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, and more. Injustice: Year Zero Chapter Four will publish on Tuesday August 18.

Injustice: Year Zero cover art is by Julian Totino Tedesco.

Harley Quinn: Black + White + Red Chapter Eight, “End Of The Line” (Aug. 14)

Written by DANIEL KIBBLESMITH

Art by MARGUERITE SAUVAGE

When Harley dozes off on a Coney Island-bound subway, she finds herself in a corner of the city she never imagined…the X Train, a pirate-filled locomotive sailing the troubled waters of New York’s underground!

And one of the hottest series of the summer, Dark Nights: Death Metal marks the return of the bestselling team of writer Scott Snyder and artist Greg Capullo—and with the first issue of this miniseries sold out and demand from readers growing with each issue, DC announces a new printing coming to comics shops August 11!

“The unabashed energy of Dark Nights: Death Metal #1 is the sort of thing most event books would kill to emulate,” Newsarama said in their review of the first issue, while Geek Dad said “this is one of the most unpredictable first issues I can remember, with callbacks to some of the greatest DC events of all time.” AiPT includes that Snyder and Capullo “are going down in comics history as one of the most dynamic, creative teams of all time,” while ComicBook said “they seem to be having an absolute ball creating this crazy world, and you'll have just as much fun getting lost in it.”

The demand is not surprising, as “DCeased: Dead Planet #1 is a superlative sequel any fan of superheroes, zombies, or great storytelling should be picking up,” said Multiversity Comics in their review, while Newsarama includes that Taylor and Hairsine have delivered “a sequel that will engage you, surprise you, and will ultimately turn everything we know about this series on its head.”

Reviews aren’t everything though, since Tom Taylor took to Twitter this morning with his latest warning: “you think there’ll be someone left standing at the end of #DCeased: Dead Planet."

Green Lantern Earth One v2 HC

Hal Jordan and John Stewart team up to save the last Green Lantern Guardian from an evil force!

Manhunters, alien races, rings of power—it’s a lot for the people of Earth to absorb. Especially when an interplanetary incident forces their protector, Hal Jordan, to leave on a rescue mission that results in the discovery that there's a new player in the galaxy: Yellow Lanterns! In this sequel to Corinna Bechko and Gabriel Hardman’s bestselling 2018 original graphic novel Green Lantern Earth One, Hal Jordan and John Stewart must team up to save the galaxy from an invading force!
Conscripted into service, the Yellow Lanterns are uniformly made up of inhabitants of the planet Qward, located in the parallel dimension where the Guardian "fled" to escape the Manhunters long ago. While they seem a benign force for peace, Jordan can't get comfortable with how much power they wield, or their bizarre, lockstep behavior. When fellow Earthling John Stewart ends up with a yellow ring, he and Hal must work together to confront the being who destroyed the original Green Lantern Corps—the last surviving Guardian.

HAL JORDAN

Jordan has re-assimilated into Earth culture on a lunar base, working as a consultant designing a privately funded spacecraft in hope of connecting Earth with the wider galaxy. In the last three years he has struggled with how he can help avert problems on Earth without falling prey to politics or creating unintended problems while still doing everything he can to protect his home planet and try to foster a brighter future.

JOHN STEWART

An Earth physicist working on propulsion systems for spacecraft, he jumped at the opportunity to study an alien craft first-hand when a Llaran vessel visited the Sol system. Too bad he was on board when an intergalactic incident broke out. He's relentlessly curious about his chosen discipline, with a deep understanding of the physics behind energy as it applies to space travel. This gives him the ability to recognize that the Yellow energy is not from our dimension. And meeting Arisia gives him a reason to use it as a force for good.

ARISIA

As the most accomplished of the Green Lanterns, her skills are unquestioned. It's her management style that chaffs some of the Green Lanterns. Or is it just that a collection of individuals always has a hard time becoming a true community? Either way, it's lonely trying to lead. Fortunately, she may have found a kindred spirit when she meets Stewart.

Green Lantern Earth One Vol. Two (978-1401293031), written by Corinna Bechko and Gabriel Hardman with art and cover by Gabriel Hardman, hits shelves August 11, 2020.

Big Girls #1

"Big Girls is next-level science fiction energy from one of the great powerhouses of American comics." —Warren Ellis

PORTLAND, Ore.  — Critically acclaimed artist Jason Howard (Trees)

takes full creative control as the writer and artist of the forthcoming action series Big Girls. This new ongoing comic book series will launch from Image Comics in August.

When men become giant monsters hellbent on destroying the world, only girls can stop them—Big Girls. Meet Ember—she writes poetry, loves to read, and she’s a 300-foot-tall full-time monster killer! She and the other big girls are all that stand in the way of our world’s complete annihilation!

In an exclusive scoop on the Big Girls announcement with The Hollywood Reporter, Howard said of the series: “[this is] the perfect comic for both the dynamic sci-fi I like to draw and for my writer side to examine questions of power, inequality and the complexity of growing up."

Featuring the fast-paced action—similar to such films as John Wick and series like Paper Girls—and the bigger than life characters of Godzilla and Pacific Rim, this series is set to be a Summer hit readers won’t want to miss.

The Harrowing of Hell HC

WRITER: Evan Dahm

AGE RANGE: General Adult

GENRE: Religion / Philosophy

SRP: $15

FORMAT: Hardcover

PAGE COUNT: 128

PUB DATE: August 11, 2020

PUBLISHER: Iron Circus Comics

TRADE DISTRIBUTOR: Consortium

Those of us who read the Bible and other ancient texts as literature know that these are deeply political works, perhaps none more so than the New Testament with its radical ideology and characters set on upending the status quo (one that has only grown more entrenched over the following millennia).

This is partly what makes the arrival of Evan Dahm’s latest graphic novel from Iron Circus Comics such a joyous occasion. In THE HARROWING OF HELL, inspired by the Bible’s apocryphal works, Evan has given us back the original revolutionary Jesus of Nazareth in a deep, sometimes unsettling, and ultimately inspiring fable for today.

But before we get too far down that path, it's worth pointing out how gorgeously illustrated this is — exactly what fans of Evan’s RICE BOY graphic novels have come to expect. His hallmark deep, inky blacks are punctuated with blazing white and nefarious spot reds as Jesus descends into Hell and flashes back to relevant moments and conversations back in the land of the living. It’s a pleasure to read and escalates so fast that you find yourself doubling back to take it all in more slowly, absorbing the slight changes in facial expressions and environments that push the story along.

The most interesting thing about HARROWING for someone who isn’t very well-versed in scripture is what it has to say about humanity, who our “enemy” really is, and who are saviors really are (or could be). This feels like myth, echoing back to us from ancient times: opaque, mysterious, and inviting. And this will be a welcome addition to bookshelves for religious experts, as well, or at least those who love alternative takes on Biblical teachings.

Lizard In A Zoot Suit

Across America, there’s widespread unrest and growing racial tensions. On the morning of August 2, 1942, the body of José Gallardo Díaz is discovered unconscious and dying on a road near a swimming hole in Commerce, CA. Diaz dies in Los Angeles County General Hospital, without making a statement or even regaining consciousness. Despite the fact that the cause of his death is never determined and there’s insufficient evidence, 17 Mexican-American youths are arrested. On January 13, 1943, twelve of the defendants in what the tabloids called the “Sleepy Lagoon murder” are convicted of second-degree murder. They are sentenced to serve time in San Quentin Prison.

The Sleepy Lagoon murder provides the backdrop for Latinx Cartoonist Marco Finnegan’s dynamic new YA graphic novel Lizard in a Zoot Suit, his first full length work as a writer/artist, in which history, race, class, and science fiction collide in unexpected ways. The all new, original graphic novel is set in LA’s Chavez Ravine neighborhood, two decades before the neighborhood was torn down to make way for Dodger Stadium. In June, 1943, long simmering tensions between the Chicano community and white servicemen led to the Zoot Suit Riots, fueled by months of fear and tension following the Sleepy Lagoon murder trial.

“A YA book shouldn’t pander to its audience,” says Finnegan. “I use authentic language and scenarios to keep one foot grounded in the reality of the riots. I started writing Lizard in a Zoot Suit after rewatching Luis Valdez’s Zoot Suit play and the film of LA Confidential. I realized that the Zoot Suit itself is such a huge part of pop culture, but little is said about who the Zoot Suiters were and, besides the play, there weren’t any other stories about these kids and their lives. I decided that I didn’t want to do a nonfiction book that would read like a history book. I love genre pieces, so I decided to add some sci-fi to the mix and the story came together.”

In Lizard in a Zoot Suit, twin sisters Flaca and Cuata have a problem. It's bigger than being grounded by their strict mother. It's bigger than tensions with the soldiers stationed nearby. And it's shaped like a five-foot-tall lizard. When this lost member of an unknown underground species needs help, the sisters must scramble to keep their new friend away from a corrupt military scientist―but they'll do it in style.

Ahead of publication, Lizard in a Zoot Suit is already receiving rave reviews:

“A beautifully rendered, heartbreaking, and insightful graphic adventure.” — John Jennings, illustrator, Kindred: A Graphic Novel Adaptation

“An entertaining and meaningful story. The bicultural characters and diverse Mexican-American setting are a fun entry point into some serious Chicano history, the era of the 1940s Zoot Suit Riots. Put on your tacuche and your tando, and get ready for Lizard in a Zoot Suit!” — Lalo Alcaraz, illustrator, Latino USA: A Cartoon History

“With a dash of mid-20th–century pulp monsters and a backdrop of 1940s Los Angeles, Finnegan mingles humanoid swamp creatures with victory rolls and zoot suits to highlight Mexican American families struggling to hold their own…. Period pop horror that will lure readers in for important history lessons.” — Kirkus Reviews

“Wacky, out-of-this-world and pure enjoyment. Finnegan pulls out all the stops and crafts a unique adventure that feels fresh and vibrant.” — Alex Segura, acclaimed comic book writer of THE BLACK GHOST, THE ARCHIES and more

“A unique and effective lens through which fans of historical fiction can view the treatment of the 'other' and race issues of the 1940s.” — School Library Journal

“Lizard In Zoot Suit carries an important message at its core. Finnegan has given us a book that sheds light on darker corners of history, while telling a story of mysterious visitors from beneath the earth.”—Samuel Sattin, author of GLINT and BEZKAMP and more

Born in El Paso, Texas, Marco Finnegan and his mother moved to Southern California in the early 1980’s. Today, he, his wife, and their four children live in Temecula, CA. Finnegan’s story is inspired, in large part, by his desire to tell a YA story that represents his and his family’s lives, in the ways that the blockbuster stories of his youth did not. “What drives me as a storyteller is imagining a future, where Latinx kids see their lives represented in comics, films, and TV shows.”

With striking two-color artwork and snappy dialogue, Marco Finnegan’s full length graphic novel debut re-imagines a notorious event in LA’s history to deliver a timely story about race and social unrest. Lizard in a Zoot Suit combines the sci-fi-fueled social relevance of The Shape of Water with the charm of Raina Telemanger’s Sisters to create a one-of-a-kind reading experience.
