GENRE TV

Snowpiercer, "A Great Odyssey" (TNT, Feb. 8)

Black Lightning, season 4 premiere, "The Book of Reconstruction: Chapter One" (CW, Feb. 8)

As CK says, watching this show feels like homework. The lives and experiences of Black people need more exposure for sure, so that white folks who think structural racism doesn't exist can see it from the POV of POC. But they're not watching this show, and now, neither am I. It's utterly joyless.

Riverdale, "Chapter Eighty: Purgatory" (CW, Feb. 10)

The actors playing F.P. Jones and Hermione Lodge were supposed to leave at the end of last season, and behold, there they are in the first three episodes of this season. In fact, all the plotlines of last season seemed to get wrapped up in the first three episodes of this season. Methinks the first three episodes of this season were supposed to be the last three episodes of last season, and just got delayed by COVID. Anyway, this week's episode jumps ahead seven years. Here's a promo:

Will Archie have PTSD? Well, duh.

Resident Alien, "Secrets" (Syfy, Feb. 10)

The Stand, finale, "Coda: Frannie in the Well" (CBS All Access, Feb. 11)

WandaVision, episode TBA (Disney+, Feb. 12)

After last episode's surprise reveal, I have no idea what to think any more. But I can't wait for more!

Marvel's Behind the Mask (Disney+, Feb. 12)

Today, Marvel Entertainment announced a brand-new documentary special, Marvel’s Behind the Mask, will debut February 12 exclusively on Disney+! Marvel’s Behind the Mask will explore the power of identity behind the world’s most iconic super heroes we know and love today.

From the very inception of comic books, secret identities have been an integral part of both super heroes and villains leading “normal” lives. But it’s the characters beneath that resonate within us across generations of fans. Since the advent of the Marvel Age of Comics in the early 1960s, Marvel’s writers and artists have used the notion of identities to examine the evolving concept of equal rights. These legendary Marvel creations and stories have not only reflected the world outside our window — they have become a reflection of our own identities and who we truly are.

Marvel’s Behind the Mask will feature guests from across Marvel’s 80-year legacy, including the writers and artists behind the rise of characters like Black Panther, Miles Morales, Ms. Marvel, Luke Cage, the X-Men, Captain Marvel, and many other characters in the Marvel Universe, highlighting Marvel’s impact on pop culture and media.

Marvel’s Behind the Mask is produced by Marvel New Media with Tarmac Creative. The film is directed by Michael Jacobs and produced by Chris Gary and Ryan Simon for Tarmac Creative and Strike Anywhere. Joe Quesada, Shane Rahmani, Stephen Wacker, John Cerilli, Harry Go, and Sarah Amos serve as Executive Producers for Marvel.

A Discovery of Witches, "Episode 2.6" (BBC America, Feb. 13)

American Gods, “Conscience of the King” (Starz, Feb. 14)

Batwoman, "Gore on Canvas" (CW, Feb. 14)

The Watch, episode TBA (BBC America, Feb. 14)

Charmed, "Triage" (CW, Feb. 14)

CROSSOVERS/EVENTS

Future State (DC Comics)

I've given up keeping up with these titles on a week-to-week basis, and am planning to just read them as each miniseries concludes. I just don't have the mental bandwidth to keep up with all of them individually. It will be easier to read all the two-shots, three-shots and four-shots back to back, rather than with 30 days separating each issue.

Dark Horse / $3.99

Bestselling writer Kyle Higgins (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Ultraman, C.O.W.L.) and superstar artist Marcelo Costa team up for Radiant Black. This all new, ongoing superhero series is set to launch from Image Comics in February 2021.

“This is the comic book I’ve been waiting my whole life to make — being able to build this with Marcelo Costa, Becca Carey and Michael Busuttil is a dream come true,” said Higgins. “Radiant Black is both a love letter to the super hero stories I love as well as a statement on what I think super heroes can be for a whole new generation.”

Radiant Black #1 introduces Nathan Burnett who has just turned thirty. Things aren’t great: He’s working (and failing) at two jobs, his credit card debt is piling up, and his only move… is moving back home with his parents.

But when Nathan discovers and unlocks the ethereal, cosmic RADIANT, he's given the power to radically change his fortunes!

There’s just one problem: The powers don’t belong to him. And the COSMIC BEINGS who created them want them back… by any means necessary.

In an exclusive scoop on the announcement of the series by io9, Costa added: "Radiant Black has two things that I love — superheroes and Sentai. When Kyle told me he wanted to mix these two worlds, it was immediately interesting to me. I knew we had the opportunity to create something very special here, especially because of the characters and the timely challenges we're building for them."

Eric Stephenson, Publisher & Chief Creative Officer at Image Comics said also: "It's been a few years since Kyle first pitched the idea of a new superhero series, but from the moment he mentioned it, I was in. Kyle's superhero work speaks for itself — especially his epic run on Power Rangers and the hugely successful 'Shattered Grid' event — so the idea of Kyle taking the skills he'd honed on work-for-hire superheroes and developing something of his own just seemed right to me. We've spent a lot of time talking superheroes over the last couple years, and it's been incredible to watch this all come together!"

Advance praise for Radiant Black:

"The perfect superhero comic for anyone missing Invincible, or anyone who hated Invincible, or anyone who never read Invincible. ... The perfect superhero comic for anyone. ... Fall in love with superheroes again. Read Radiant Black!" — Robert Kirkman

“Bright, smart and too much fun — classic Saturday morning superhero greatness remade for a new generation!" — Scott Snyder

“Doesn’t feel like a revival or a reboot — this is a superhero for right now. I can’t wait to see where it’s going.” — Kurt Busiek

"The spiritual successor to Invincible — a brand new superhero for Image Comics with gorgeous art, clever dialogue, and a wonderful mix of the human and the fantastic. Check it out!" — Joe Henderson, Skyward, showrunner of Lucifer

"Higgins' most powerful and, more importantly, most personal story to date. An original Image superhero series for the next generation." — Ryan Parrott, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Dead Day

“Brought me back to that same feeling I had when I first read Invincible: the tone and feel of classic old school superhero comic book joy, updated and filtered through a modern lens. A fantastic creative team elevating each other’s work from panel to panel.” — Robbie Thompson, Meet the Skrulls, Teen Titans, Supernatural

“A fresh take on a classic setup — dreams withering, a frustrated young man is forced to move back home and in with his parents to get his life together. A drunken night and a shocking unearthly experience hint at major consequences to come. I loved this perfectly executed first issue.” — Christopher Golden, Baltimore and Joe Golem: Occult Detective

“Amazing dialogue. Incredible reversals. Surprising twists. All with a strong character arc at its center. … A blast from start to finish.” — Marc Guggenheim, Arrow, X-MEN Gold

“I would absolutely recommend to folks missing Invincible or who want a fun and hilarious action comic to add to their pull list!” — Leila del Duca, Wonder Woman: Tempest, Afar, Sleepless

“I loved this. It’s got that rich, character-driven early Ultimate Spider-Man, Invincible vibe. Superheroes should be fun.” — Alex Paknadel

“A modern hero story that really hits home — especially for those of us that feel like we still haven’t hit our stride or gotten as far along in life as we should’ve.” — Brian Buccellato, The Flash, Sons of the Devil

“What a breath of fresh air. … Bridges the gap between who we are and what we all aspire to be. It is sleek, unique, and oh so prescient.” — David Gallaher, Convergence: Green Lantern Corps, Ghost Recon: Breakpoint

“The spiritual successor to Invincible — a brand new superhero with gorgeous art, clever dialogue, and a wonderful mix of the human and the fantastic. Check it out!” — Joe Henderson, Skyward, showrunner of Lucifer

“An excellent superhero romp with slick art and an extremely cool looking hero — looking forward to reading more.” — John McCrea, Hitman, Dead Eyes

I realized some time ago why Joseph Michael Linsner's women all have such thick waists, but I don't think I've articulated it here. To wit: He draws the rib cage extending all the way to the top of the hip bone. Linsner women don't actually have waists. I love Linsner's rendering — his lighting, color choice, textures — but the strange anatomy is off-putting.

Fear Case #1 (of 4) 2nd Ptg

Cover: Andrea Sorrentino

Writer: Matt Kindt

Art: Tyler Jenkins

Dark Horse / $3.99

The series debut of the anticipated horror comic Fear Case by writer Matt Kindt (BANG!, Mind MGMT), artist Tyler Jenkins (The Grass Kings, Neverboy) and colorist Hilary Jenkins (Black Badge, King of Nowhere) has sold out at the distributor level ahead of it’s February 3, 2021 on-sale date. Dark Horse Comics has tapped the critically acclaimed Andrea Sorrentino, artist behind the Eisner-winning horror series ‘Gideon Falls’ to provide a new cover for the issue’s second printing.

Described as “True Detective” meets “The Ring”, Fear Case marks Matt Kindt’s first foray into the horror genre. Says Kindt, “I’ve never written a story in the horror genre before. Real life is already so full of it. This is the most grounded thing I’ve ever written. And as a result, it’s definitely the most horrific. I apologize in advance.”

“What an exciting way to start of the New Year!” says Matt Parkinson, VP of Marketing at Dark Horse Comics. “Fear Case looks to be yet another Matt Kindt classic and we couldn’t be happier with the overwhelming response to his new horror series. Congratulations Matt and Tyler!”

“I was so excited to see Matt finally dip his toes into a horror comic. Fear Case is so damn good and spooky as hell!! Tyler and Hilary’s art on the story really push the eerie tone of the plot,” series editor Daniel Chabon says about Kindt’s new project. “When I heard the comic sold out and we needed a new cover Andrea was the first person to come to mind. His work on Gideon Falls was so brilliant and creepy that I knew he could knock this cover out of the park.”

Dark Horse Comics will debut the first issue of Fear Case on February 3, 2021 featuring a standard cover by Tyler Jenkins and variant covers by Francisco Francavilla and Duncan Fegredo. Dark Horse Comics will publish the second printing variant of issue 1, featuring an all new cover by Andrea Sorrentino, on February 10th, 2020, in order to meet the high demand from comic book stores and readers.

Freiheit!: The White Rose GN

Writer/Art/Cover: Andrea Grosso Ciponte

Plough Publishing House / $24.00

With an entire nation blindly following an evil leader, where did a handful of students find the courage to resist? The thrilling and timely book FREIHEIT!: The White Rose Graphic Novel tells the dramatic true stories of the young university students who formed the White Rose, an undercover resistance movement in Nazi Germany which wrote and distributed now-infamous pamphlets calling for resistance against the Third Reich before their untimely deaths at the hands of the Gestapo. Their story, which has been celebrated in print and film, will be experienced in graphic novel form for the very first time, accompanied by Italian artist Andrea Grosso Ciponte’s haunting imagery which will resonate with today’s students and activists.

The young university students who formed the White Rose knew that doing so could cost them their lives. But some things are worth dying for. Beginning on June 27, 1942, the White Rose printed and distributed leaflets to expose Nazi atrocities and wake up their fellow citizens. Just seven short months later, on February 18, 1943, The Gestapo caught and executed them. Sophie Scholl was twenty-one; her brother Hans, twenty-four; Christoph Probst, twenty-three; Alexander Schmorell and Willi Graf, twenty-five. But while its leaders were killed too soon, the White Rose was not silenced — and its message, and the heroism of its leaders, continues to inspire new generations of resistors, who know that while the challenges they face may differ, the need for young people to stand up against evil, whatever the cost, will remain.

The incredible story of the brave young people behind the White Rose movement is beautifully told in graphic novel form for the very first time by Italian artist Andrea Grosso Ciponte. Ciponte’s dreamily painted art drifts between brutal reality and poignant metaphor while quotes from German writers and thinkers allow the story to toggle seamlessly between the personal and the political, past and present, timely and timeless. The story of these iconic resistance leaders who lived and died almost 80 years ago echoes resoundingly into the present moment, making FREIHEIT!: The White Rose Graphic Novel an urgent and hopeful read for a modern audience.

Here’s what critics are saying about FREIHEIT!: The White Rose Graphic Novel”

“The true story of a group of anti-fascist student propagandists. ... Although the White Rose lost its leaders, the spirit of the group continues to inspire young activists to this day, a fact that Ciponte’s graphic novel underscores, placing events into a larger historical context via additional quotes and commentary from German writers and historians.” — THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER

“Ciponte ... adopts a cinematic pace for the story, allowing it to unspool through the ordinary moments in the lives of the five protagonists. In doing so, he gives the characters depth and dimension beyond their historical role as resistance martyrs. … FREIHEIT! is an important reminder that the darkest times can’t extinguish the spark of human conscience, and that history remembers those who take risks — and even pay the ultimate cost — to resist oppression.” — FORBES

“Striking and atmospheric.” — BOOKLIST

“A heartfelt, well-deserved tribute.” — KIRKUS

“Appropriately moody and beautifully composed.” — COMICS BEAT

“Writer and artist Andrea Grosso Ciponte captures the hope and horror of resistance in hopeless, horrible times; a topic entirely too relevant to the present day. FREIHEIT! manages to be both intimate and epic, as it tells the story of Sophie Scholl and the White Rose resistance to Nazi Germany … a story little-known to English-speaking audiences. Ciponte uses an art style that evokes faded photographs, and a narrative technique that combines internal dialogue, classic literature and speeches from the period. The result feels like a stream-of-consciousness straight from the tortured German soul, suffering and straining under Hitler’s heel.” — David Avallone, THE SECRET DIARY OF BETTIE PAGE

“Brilliantly timely... I was engrossed until I finished the book in one sitting. It’s a magnificently illustrated and taut thrilling retelling of the incredible daring of these students who gave full measure to end the evil in their midst.” — GOOD MEN PROJECT

Mastermind W. Maxwell Prince (Ice Cream Man) has done it again with another hit anthology comic series in the recent launch of his new series Haha. The first issue is sold out at the distributor level and being fast-tracked for a second printing showcasing new artwork.

“Thank you to everyone who laughed and cried along with this first issue,” said Prince. “Finding grace in a dark place is an active practice — let’s keep working at it together.”

Featuring his signature Ice Cream Man style of one-shot storytelling, Haha welcomes readers into the world of clowns — and he’s invited some of the comic industry’s top talent to join him for the ride.

Haha is a genre-jumping, throat-lumping look at the sad, scary, hilarious life of those who get paid to play the fool — but these ain’t your typical jokers.

With issues drawn by Vanesa Del Rey (Redlands), Gabriel Walta (Vision), Roger Langridge (Thor), and more, Haha peeks under the big top, over the rainbow, and even inside a balloon to tell a wide-ranging slew of stories about “funny” men and women, proving that some things are so sad you just have to laugh.

I Walk with Monsters #1 2nd Ptg

Man, John Byrne's cover to Uncanny X-Men #139 sure gets a lot of mileage in the homage arena. I understand when a cover like Uncanny X-Men #144 (Days of Future Past Part II) or Fantastic Four #1 get a lot of homages; they're striking or famous, and instantly recognizable. "Welcome to the X-Men, Kitty Pryde" was just OK. Kinda Silver Age-y, TBH. So I don't understand the fascination.

Writer: Paul Cornell

Art: Sally Cantirino

Vault / $3.99

Vault announced that I WALK WITH MONSTERS #1 is sold out at the distributor and is going back to press for a second printing. The new printing will feature a brand new Vault Vintage cover by Sally Cantirino and Tim Daniel that pays homage to Byrne and Austin's legendary cover to Uncanny X-Men #139 (1980).

I WALK WITH MONSTERS is written by Paul Cornell (Saucer State, Action Comics, Wolverine), drawn by rockstar artist Sally Cantirino, with colors by Dearbhla Kelly, letters by Andworld, and design by Tim Daniel.

The I WALK WITH MONSTERS #1 second printing will hits store shelves on the same day as issue #3.

In Jacey's past is the Important Man who took away her brother. Now Jacey has David, who sometimes transforms into a terrifying beast. Together, they've found a way to live to hunt, sniffing out men who prey on the vulnerable. But Jacey and David are about to run into the Important Man again. From Paul Cornell (Wolverine, Doctor Who, Elementary) and Sally Cantirino (Last Song, We Have To Go Back) comes a haunting story about the monsters that walk beside us all, and sometimes lurk within.

PRAISE FOR I WALK WITH MONSTERS:

“... [its] strong, integrated aesthetic - grounded until it goes truly warped — makes me think of Redlands, Something is Killing the Children and the creepier end of Lemire. Continues Vault's genuine hot streak.” — Kieron Gillen

“...a slow burn horror with real heart. Can’t wait to see more!” — Jock

“Like many of the best horror stories, I Walk With Monsters forces us to ask what it really means to be a monster, and whether it's ever possible to escape from the realm of the monstrous. Equal parts character study and gory thrillride, this comic left me both disturbed and desperately eager to see where the story goes next.” — Charlie Jane Anders

"It's one part rural horror, one part revenger, several parts pathos. Minimalist. Clever. Powerful. I cannot recommend this series enough." — Jackson Lanzing

"I Walk With Monsters is a masterful piece of comics pacing. Of horror creeping up on you. Children disappearing. Vengeance coming for the perpetrators via fang and claw. I liked it very much." — Rob Williams

    Dejah Thoris v3 (2019) #10

    Cover C: Joseph Michael Linsner

I realized some time ago why Joseph Michael Linsner's women all have such thick waists, but I don't think I've articulated it here. To wit: He draws the rib cage extending all the way to the top of the hip bone. Linsner women don't actually have waists. I love Linsner's rendering — his lighting, color choice, textures — but the strange anatomy is off-putting.

On Cover C, is it me or are her breasts waayy out of alignment?

  • The amusing Jimmy Broxton Red Sonja cover is a homage to John Romita's cover for Marvel's My Love #7.

I noticed that too. I finally figured out that one was supposedly being pushed up by her gun hand. It was just ... badly done.

Thanks for giving me an excuse to look at a long string of Romita Sr. covers. Man, he sure could draw pretty people.

    8536110660?profile=RESIZE_710x

  • Broxton credits Romita and I didn't double-check. But looking at your image I thought I saw John Buscema's style. Buscema did work on Marvel's early 70s romance comics.

The GCD credits the pencils to Buscema and is unsure whether the inks are Joe Sinnott's or Romita's: "Inking credit per Romita via Mike Burkey. Upon examining the original art page on Burkey's site Nick Caputo still sees the distinctive linework of Sinnott and suspects Romita may have either provided the cover rough o[r] touch-ups". Typo corrected.

The heads of the main figures have a Romita look, and it's likely enough the cover was done from a rough as it was standard, so perhaps Romita did both. Marie Severin also did cover designs for Marvel in the 1970s but I don't know when that started.
