BLACK HAMMER VOL 6: REBORN PART II TPB

GRENDEL OMNIBUS VOL 1: HUNTER ROSE TPB 2ND EDITION

Story/Art: Matt Wagner | Dark Horse | $29.99

In celebration of the 40th anniversary for Matt Wagner’s expansive, genre-defying saga Grendel, Dark Horse Comics will be publishing a second edition of the complete Grendel Omnibus line. Starting with the first man to use the Grendel moniker, Hunter Rose (the character and story behind the upcoming Netflix show!) and traveling into the far-flung future with Grendel Prime, the Grendel omnibuses are a must have for long time fans and new readers alike!

Grendel Omnibus Volume 1 begins the entire epic series and chronicles the complete Hunter Rose storyline. This collection features millionaire Hunter Rose and his alter ego, the criminal mastermind Grendel! This collection features the very first Hunter Rose story, a complete Hunter Rose adventure by Matt Wagner, and vignettes and short stories from that key Grendel era by contributing storytellers Tim Sale, Guy Davis, Stan Sakai, Mike Allred, Darrick Robertson, Michael Avon Oeming, Jill Thompson, the Pander Brothers, Duncan Fegredo, Troy Nixey and many more!

This first omnibus reprints Grendel: Devil by the Deed; the short story collections Grendel: Black, White, & Red and Grendel: Red, White, & Black, and Grendel: Behold the Devil. It also features a brand-new cover illustrated by Matt Wagner and colored Brennan Wagner.

“When I first created Grendel, I could only dream that the character and concepts would have a life and resonance beyond the initial storyline.  Now, 40 years into this dark and sprawling saga, I can look back on an epic narrative that’s always provided as many thrills and surprises for me as it hopefully has for its readers.” — Matt Wagner

Praise for Grendel:

"Grendel is a brave and possibly even reckless experiment that has succeeded admirably." — Alan Moore

"Matt Wagner created a world for Grendel that is brutal, violent, tragic and sad. It’s also home to some of the best comic book stories ever created." — Eric Robert Nolan

"Wagner is still capable of preparing the bitterest of pills in an enjoyable fashion, precisely why Grendel remains relevant." — Comicbook.com

  • I was eagerly awaiting Grendel, Matt Wagner's second act after Mage, but was pretty disappointed. I can't really say why I didn't like Grendel. I just didn't find anything about it appealing. YMMV.

RADICAL: MY YEAR WITH A SOCIALIST SENATOR OGN

Story/Art: Sofia Warren | 312 pages | B&W | softcover with flaps |  6.5” x 9” | $24.99

You won the election ... now what? Activist organizing meets government gridlock as a millennial New Yorker cartoonist follows a first-year state senator on her unforgettable journey — from outsider to insider.

In early 2018, cartoonist Sofia Warren was not paying attention to New York state politics. But that summer, her Brooklyn neighborhood began buzzing about Julia Salazar, a 27-year-old democratic socialist running for state senate whose grassroots campaign was inspiring an army of volunteers. When they beat the odds and won, Warren found herself wondering what would happen next. How does it work when an outsider who runs on revolutionary change has to actually do the job? So she decided to find out.

Using the graphic memoir format, Radical: My Year with a Socialist Senator is a remarkable first-hand account of Warren’s experience embedded with Julia Salazar and her staff during their first year in office. From candid conversations and eyewitness experiences, Warren builds a gripping and intimate portrait of a scrappy team of community organizers battling entrenched power structures, particularly to advance Julia’s marquee issue of housing rights.

At every key point during the year — setting up an office, navigating insider politics, public pushback, testy staff meetings, emotional speeches, protest marches, setbacks,  victories — Warren is up close and personal with Julia and her team, observing, questioning and drawing, as they try to translate their ideals into concrete legislation. Along the way, Warren works toward answers to deeper questions: what makes a good leader? What does it mean to be a part of a community? Can democracy work? How can everyday people make change happen? All these themes are explored — with nuance, compassion and humor — in Sofia Warren's remarkable debut.

"So much of this experience was a surprise to me," says Warren: "that for their entire first legislative session, Julia and her staff let me be in the room; that 'the room' was just as often a food court, or a senior center, or a march in the middle of a blizzard; that they were as open with me about their frustrations as they were about their victories; and that I — an introverted, cynical millennial living through the Trump presidency — could leave the experience so motivated and inspired. I hope that readers leave this book feeling the same."

"After seeing firsthand how the award-winning graphic memoirs March and They Called Us Enemy have transformed countless readers' understanding of essential issues, we can't wait to bring Sofia's book into the world," says editor Leigh Walton. "Why do elected officials act the way they do? Is there any other way? Why are we often disappointed by our governments, and how can we talk so they will listen? Radical, in its charming, accessible style, gives us a rare look behind the curtain, filling in some of these gaps in our understanding and leaving us better equipped to shape the future."

Sofia Warren has been a contributing cartoonist to The New Yorker since 2017, and her work has been featured in MoMA Magazine, Narrative Magazine, Catapult and the books Notes from the Bathroom Line and Send Help! She is a visiting professor at Wesleyan University, and is based in Brooklyn.

"I learned more about politics from Sofia Warren's brilliant graphic novel than from the 30,000 hours of political podcasts I listen to every week.” — Jesse Eisenberg, Academy Award nominee

BONE ORCHARD MYTHOS: THE PASSAGEWAY HC

Story: Jeff Lemire | Art/Cover: Andrea Sorrentino | Mature | $17.99

From the creative team of GIDEON FALLS and PRIMORDIAL comes the first book in a bold and ambitious new shared horror universe! When a geologist is sent to a remote lighthouse to investigate strange phenomenon he finds a seemingly endless pit in the rocks. But what lurks within and how will he escape its pull?

The Eisner Award winning, bestselling creative team that brought fans Gideon Falls and Primordial — Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino — will grow their empire with the launch of The Bone Orchard Mythos. This shared horror universe of interconnected stories will launch from Image Comics in 2022.

The Bone Orchard Mythos is an ambitious expansion for the powerhouse creative team and will span multiple books and across a variety of different storytelling formats. Each title will tell its own unique, self-contained tale — some as standalone hardcover graphic novels, some as miniseries comics, and some as longer format maxiseries comics — but they will all be set within the same world and add to the overall Bone Orchard mythology.

The team plans to release at least two new titles each year, for the next several years. In Summer 2022 the horrors begin with a hardcover graphic novel titled, The Passageway, which follows a geologist sent to a remote lighthouse to investigate a strange phenomenon. In Fall 2022 Lemire and Sorrentino will follow up with a miniseries titled Ten Thousand Black Feathers, and then another original graphic novel hardcover in 2023 titled Tenement.

“These will be just the first few projects in The Bone Orchard Mythos,” said Lemire. “But that’s just the start. We are planning a vast mythology of horror stories that will last for years to come.”

Sorrentino confirmed that both Ten Thousand Black Feathers and Tenement have already been already plotted. “Jeff and I have been planning and plotting The Bone Orchard Mythos for over a year now and I think it will result in something huge for the years to come. Each one of these books is imbued with such a moody and a chilling atmosphere that is just so good to work with. Seriously, when we started discussing the project, I felt like I was finally home. These are the kind of stories I want to read as a graphic novel and comics fan, and the kind of things I want to draw as an artist. Every series and graphic novel of The Bone Orchard Mythos will help develop and show this vast hierarchy of horrors we've created while, at the same time, serve as a complete, stand alone story. I'm utterly excited that this news is now out in the world. I promise you we'll all have a lot of fun with this.”

The Passageway may be the most complete collaboration between Andrea and I yet," said Lemire. "It not only tells a complete, dark and mysterious story, it also opens the doors to the larger universe of The Bone Orchard Mythos. We’re setting out to make smart, evocative and emotional horror stories that take readers to places they never could have imagined."

Sorrentino added: "The Passageway also coincidentally comes with a title that has both a meaning in the story itself (as our unfortunate John will find out) and acts as a gate for the readers to this brand-new, exciting horror universe. Jeff an I have carefully built a complex mythology and lore for this new world for months now and I can't wait for all this world-building to slowly unfold before the reader's eyes in the coming years. It will be huge."

“The creative rapport Jeff and Andrea have developed over the course of the last few years is on par with the partnership Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips have built,” said Eric Stephenson, publisher and chief creative officer at Image Comics. “So watching the Bone Orchard Mythos take shape has been truly amazing and it's awesome that they've chosen to launch this new horror universe during Image's 30th anniversary!”

  • Ambitious Image Project #1: This is aimed at launching a line of horror comics and graphic novels.
  •  I have enjoyed both creators' previous work, so I might be on board for this.

CLEMENTINE BOOK ONE GN

Story/Art: Tillie Walden | Skybound Comet | Young Adult | $14.99

It’s a new beginning for Clementine, the star of the bestselling video game franchise TELLTALE’S THE WALKING DEAD, in Clementine Book One, as she’s back on the road, looking to put her traumatic past behind her and forge a new path all her own. But when she comes across an Amish teenager named Amos, the unlikely pair journeys north to an abandoned ski resort in Vermont, where they meet up with a small group of teenagers attempting to build a new, walker-free settlement. As friendship, rivalry and romance begin to blossom among the group, the harsh winter soon reveals that the biggest threat to their survival … might be each other.

Clementine Book One marks the official launch of Skybound Comet, a new original graphic novel imprint aimed at Young Adult (Ages 12+) and Middle Grade (Ages 8-12) audiences.

The next Skybound Comet releases will be the Everyday Hero Machine Boy OGN from rising stars Tri Vuong and Irma Kniivila in September 2022, followed by Sea Serpent’s Heir Book One from acclaimed creators Mairghread Scott (Star Wars: Resistance, Guardians of the Galaxy) and Pablo Tunica  (TMNT Universe) in October 2022.

“With Clementine, beloved cartoonist Tillie Walden blows open the WALKING DEAD universe with a story full of blossoming relationships in the shadow of wintery death. It’s ominous and magical and will have you craving more when the final page turns.” — Chip Zdarsky, Daredevil, Stillwater

"Clementine is an arresting exploration of trauma, community and hope, devastatingly rendered in Tillie Walden’s signature style. A triumph of the zombie genre.” — Shannon Watters, Lumberjanes

“Tillie Walden is one of the most extraordinary artists working today, and her storytelling talent shines on every page of this tense, heartbreaking, and epic thriller. Clementine will have you turning pages into the night, heart in your throat, desperately urging the characters to survive. An incredible work.”  — Marie Lu, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Skyhunter

"Clementine brings its own distinct voice, style and sensibility to THE WALKING DEAD universe, which is quite a feat on its own. On top of that, it’s an exquisitely drawn story about how to survive trauma and find strength in ourselves and others." — Kelly Sue DeConnick, Pretty Deadly, Captain Marvel

“Tillie Walden is the future. Her boldly authentic voice brings new heights to the world of The Walking Dead. I couldn't be more proud of what she's doing with this series.”  —  ROBERT KIRKMAN (THE WALKING DEAD, INVINCIBLE)

"Tillie paints the grim with the lush, the dark with the soaring. Gritty and raw, Clementine is a beating heart."  — NGOZI UKAZU (Check, Please!)

  • Ambitious Image Project #2: This book is aimed at launching a line of Young Adult and Middle Grade books from Robert Kirkman's Skybound imprint.
  • While I generally enjoy Walking Dead comics (even as I've abandoned the TV efforts), I'm neither a Young Adult nor in Middle School. Probably not my thing. The art's nice, tho.
  • I got bunches of press releases on this book, and each one had a different preview! So here they are, all bunched together (and hopefully in order).

Co-writers Robert Windom (Stars Fell On Alabama) and Kelvin Mao (10 Minutes Gone) team up with superstar artist Jae Lee for his first new creator-owned project since 1994 in the upcoming thriller Seven Sons.

"Seven Sons is a complex and interesting story that grabs you from page one," said Lee. "I'm excited for people to join us on this thrill ride!"

In Seven Sons, Delph — a young man who may be the Second Coming of Christ — runs for his life as he attempts to learn the truth behind his existence.

"Kelvin and I were interested in exploring the impact of religion in society — but with murder, mystery, romance and even a missile attack or two — and Jae Lee is the perfect artist to realize our vision of this alternative history," said Windom.

Seven Sons is the perfect series for fans of fast-paced plotting like The Fugitive paired with The Da Vinci Code’s Biblically high stakes.

IRON FIST #4 (OF 5)

IRON MAN #20

Story: Christopher Cantwell | Art: Angel Unzueta | Covers: Alex Ross, Betsy Cola | Teen+ | $3.99

Over the course of Chris Cantwell’s run on IRON MAN, Tony Stark has traveled across the galaxy, battled against Korvac and struggled with gaining new cosmic powers — but he hasn’t faced this epic journey alone. By his side has been his new love interest and partner, Patsy Walker aka Hellcat! In true Marvel fashion, the pair’s blossoming romance has developed amid a backdrop of interdimensional conflicts and Celestial-level threats. Now in May’s IRON MAN #20, Tony, back on his feet and seeking much-needed stability, will bend down on one knee and ask Patsy to marry him! Could the next Marvel Comics wedding be on the horizon, or will more chaos keep these lovers apart?

Here's what Cantwell had to say the exciting future of Tony and Patsy’s relationship:

"Since Issue #1, bringing Patsy Walker/Hellcat into this story just felt right. She was the perfect kind of grounded presence in Tony Stark’s hyper-octane world that I believed could help bring more balance to his life. Patsy Walker’s best super-power in my mind has always been her ability to be human and sincere. And like Tony, she has had her share of demons in the past (some literal in her case).

“Both Patsy and Tony have gone through fundamental transformations in this story. And as the dust settles, and Tony sees Patsy as this phenomenal force in his life, he does the only thing he can think to do in order to keep her near him and connected: he proposes they be together for the rest of their lives. Of course, marriage is freighted for Patsy in ways it is for few other Marvel characters. Just one her previous relationships took her to the very depths of hell. It’s not an easy decision for her in the least.”

  • I haven't been reading Iron Man, so this is a complete surprise to me. Any chance it will last?

But if we stay in them, if those stories stick with us, it is because of the characters.”

Whitted is author of the scholarly introduction for Black Panther; she is Professor of English and African American Studies at the University of South Carolina, and an Eisner Award-winning comics scholar.

The Penguin Classics Marvel Collection will continue with the release of additional titles to be announced at a later date.

For decades, Marvel has published groundbreaking visual narratives that sustain attention on multiple levels: as explorations of the relationship between power and responsibility; as metaphors for the experience of difference and otherness; as meditations on the pain of adolescence and the fluid nature of identity; as examinations of the meaning, and limits, of patriotism; as ironic juxtapositions of the cosmic and the quotidian; as resources for the understanding of political and social history; and as high watermarks in the artistic tradition of American cartooning. For the first time, these classic stories of some of the most iconic superheroes in the history of American comics are Penguin Classics.

“The comics produced at Marvel in the 1960s can be compared to the most enduring popular music of that same tumultuous decade," Saunders said. "Working at tremendous speed in what was widely regarded as a low-status commercial medium, the creators at Marvel initiated and participated in an aesthetic revolution. These comics have now influenced writers and artists across all forms of media  —  from contemporary novelists to hip hop musicians to Hollywood filmmakers.  It is not hyperbole but simply a fact: these classic Marvel Comics are foundational documents of our culture.”

“When we talk about what makes a classic, we consider the work’s ability to connect with an audience across time, in both universal and individual ways," said Elda Rotor, Vice President and Publisher of Penguin Classics. " Marvel’s sustained and rich engagement with generations of readers, one that also provides a critical social lens, a deeply personal reflection of the human condition, and a shared reading experience of such storytelling and artistic innovation, is a super power. For instance, you can just say, ‘Spider-Man,’ and it opens up a whole world of stories and understanding. To me, that makes a Marvel classic a Penguin Classic. To have this opportunity to place the work of Stan Lee, Steve Ditko, Jack Kirby and many other historic Marvel creators on shelves alongside the world’s classics marks a very special chapter in Penguin’s publishing history.”

Sven Larsen, Vice President of Licensed Publishing at Marvel Entertainment, says, “From The Odyssey to The Time Machine, the Penguin Classics list not only recognizes the most important works in storytelling but also places them in their important historical and cultural context. Spider-Man, Black Panther and Captain America have become the bedrock of countless stories across media, and it's a testament to the genius of Marvel's writers and artists that these characters resonate so strongly today. It’s a remarkable honor to have these important chapters in Marvel history join this esteemed series from Penguin Random House. I can't wait for new readers to discover these stories for the first time, and I'm excited for existing fans to be able to read the new introductions, essays and other material that will provide an even deeper appreciation of these seminal works of graphic fiction.”

THEIR BLOOD GOT MIXED ROJAVA & WAR ON ISIS

Story/ART: PM Press | Mature | $27.95

In the summer of 2012, the Kurdish people of northern Syria set out to create a multiethnic society in the Middle East. Syria plunged into civil war, while the Kurds and their Arab and Assyrian allies established a self-governing polity that was not only multiethnic but democratic. And women were not only permitted but encouraged to participate in all social roles alongside men, including political and military roles. To implement these goals, Rojava wanted to live in peace with its neighbors. Instead, it soon faced invasion by ISIS, a force that was in every way its opposite. When ISIS attacked the mostly Kurdish city of Kobane and overran much of it, the YPG and YPJ, or people's militias, declined to flee. Instead they resisted, and several countries, seeing their valiant resistance, formed an international coalition to assist them militarily.

  • I hate thinking about the Kurds, because I feel guilty about how badly the U.S. treated them. They were our staunchest allies in that part of the world, and Trump just abandoned them to Turkey's tender mercies. I know I shouldn't feel guilty, because there was nothing I could do about it, but I still do.

THE TREASURE OF THE BLACK SWAN HC

Story: Guillermo Corral | Art: Paco Roca | Fantagraphics | $29.99

Based on real events, this thrilling graphic novel chronicles the intense legal and political battles sparked by the discovery of a priceless shipwreck.

May 2007. When an American treasure-hunting company uncovers a shipwreck containing the greatest underwater trove ever found, the world is captivated by their discovery. But over in Spain, a group of low-level government officials surmises that the sunken ship is in fact an ancient Spanish vessel. Thus begins a legal and political thriller, pitting a group of idealistic diplomats against a rich and powerfully connected treasure hunter, in which vital cultural artifacts and hundreds of millions of dollars hang in the balance.

Cartoonist Paco Roca and writer Guillermo Corral bring a cinematic flair to this graphic novel, combining threads of Tintin-inspired seafaring adventure, political intrigue, tense courtroom drama and, in the midst of it all, a budding romance. A gripping dramatization of a little-known, unbelievable true story of money, political power and cultural heritage.

Paco Roca (Valencia, 1969) is a cartoonist and illustrator whose works have won a variety of awards, including Spain's National Comics Prize in 2008 and the prizes for best script and best work at the Barcelona International Comic Fair in 2008 and 2011.

Guillermo Corral has worked as a career diplomat since 1997. The Treasure of the Black Swan, a work of fiction based on real events that he witnessed firsthand, marks his debut as a comic book writer.

WEAKLY DISPATCH TPB

Story/Art: Rick Trembles | Conundrum Press | $20.00

When COVID-19 hit Montreal, cartoonist Rick Trembles started “The Weakly Dispatch,” a series of diary comics offering his personal perspective on pandemic life. Trembles' asthma put him at risk of a serious infection so, like many others, he took careful measures to avoid coming into contact with the virus. He self-isolated for months, surviving on grocery deliveries from friends, DIY workouts (to prevent muscle atrophy), and of course, comics. Leaving the apartment, however, turned out to be even harder than staying isolated. Initially foiled by stair-painters and coughing neighbors, Trembles quickly discovered a newly perilous world, populated by unmasked people and handshake enthusiasts.

MEN WHO CREATED GUNDAM GN

Story/Art: Hideki Owada | Translation: Jason Moses | Lettering: Brandon Bovia | Denpa | 564 pages | $21.95

In 1978 animation director Yoshiyuki Tomino set forth to change the Japanese animation industry. For decades prior, Japanese science fiction had churned out numerous tales of semi-autonomous robots that would often come to the aide of humanity, but as someone who worked on a number of those works, Tomino came to the realization that he wanted to see a more realistic robot narrative. His vision was one where the robot, while just slightly more human in appearance, was utilized more as a tool manipulated by man. With renowned artist Yoshikazu Yasuhiko by his side, and occasionally as his artistic rival, Tomino would change the way the whole world came to see Japanese animation and the broader toy and comics industries built around it.

A diary of my sexual awakening … at 33?!!

Asuka is neither a woman nor a man — they’re X-gender (a non-binary identity) — and they’ve realized they like women! Okay, now what? Adult films are fun to watch, but real sex is less appealing. Would having a penis make that better or worse? Periods already suck, and sex means more fluids from more people! This autobiographical manga follows Asuka’s feelings about their body, their relationships and the fun (and sometimes terrible) experience of having an awakening in their thirties.

"While I generally enjoy Walking Dead comics... I'm neither a Young Adult nor in Middle School. Probably not my thing. The art's nice, tho."

My thoughts exactly. I thought I might give it a try, but 15 bucks is kinda steep for a YA thing. A cheaper preview wouod have been nice. Was there a FCBD offering? (I forget.)

How so, I wonder...? I was planning on giving this one a try, but your mention of "EYKIW" doesn't appeal to me. (I have had quite enough of that in Captain America, thank-you-very-much. Were you just riffing on "Nothing is what it appears to be" or is there something specific?
