Rat Queens #22

Image/Shadowline is pleased to announce that artist Moritat (Gunning for Hits) and colorist Casey Silver will be joining series writer Ryan Ferrier (Rick and Morty, Narcos) on the Rat Queens team. The two collaborators will put a fresh spin on the beloved high fantasy series and promise fans even more adventure to come this October.

“We're going back to the roots of what makes Rat Queens such a perennial fan favorite—booze, blood, big laughs and even bigger adventures. Prepare for a new level of sword and sorcery with the undisputed queens of bad girl fantasy action!”

No gods. No rules. All problems. In Rat Queens #22, business is booming for our heroes-for-hire, but the dissolution of an ancient treaty has put Palisade in the crosshairs of a monster squad with an appetite for long nights, party fights, and wolf bites!

Ferrier added: “We're thrilled to be able to finally work with Moritat and Casey. The rest of this arc will not only look amazing, but will continue to bring the fun, fantasy, and attitude Rat Queens is celebrated for.”

Rat Queens #22 (Diamond Code AUG200365) will be available at comic book shops on Wednesday, October 21.

Rat Queens #22 will also be available for purchase across many digital platforms, including Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, comiXology, and Google Play.

Who are the Rat Queens? A pack of booze-guzzling, death-dealing battle maidens-for-hire, and they're in the business of killing all gods' creatures for profit. It's also a darkly comedic fantasy series starring Hannah the Rockabilly Elven Mage, Violet the Hipster Dwarven Fighter, Dee the Atheist Human Cleric and Betty the Hippy Hobbit Thief. A contemporary take on violent monster-killing epics like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but set in a Lord of the Rings-esque world. The perfect series for D&D and RPG fanatics everywhere.

Rat Queens, Volumes 1-7 trade paperbacks and Rat Queens Book 1 and Book 2 Deluxe hardcover editions are all available now at your local comic book shop or independent bookstore via Bookshop or IndieBound, or at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Books-a-Million, and Indigo.

Savage Dragon #253

Image Comics partner and CFO Erik Larsen is voting Biden/Harris this election season with an alternate cover of Savage Dragon #253 revealed today.

“This is an important election. They always say that but with America literally on fire and an ineptly handled pandemic it feels especially so,” said Larsen. “Twelve years ago SAVAGE DRAGON endorsed BARACK OBAMA and history was made. Savage Dragon #137 was the first comic book to feature the then-candidate Obama on its cover and it became a global sensation. It’s time to take a stance once more and help make the country, and the world, a better place!”

Larsen has previously done covers featuring cameos of politicians, his cover endorsing Barack Obama sold out and went back to press four times.

Savage Dragon has had a long tradition of president and candidate covers dating back to George W. Bush, and covers featuring past presidents have become highly collectible items.

Savage Dragon #253 will be available at comic book shops on Wednesday, October 21.

Savage Dragon #253 will also be available for purchase across many digital platforms, including Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, comiXology, and Google Play.

This new ongoing series will feature a murderers’ row of all-star artistic talent rotating each issue. The Scumbag is the story of Ernie Ray Clementine, a profane, illiterate, drug addicted, biker, with a fifth-grade education and the only thing standing between us and total Armageddon because this dummy accidentally received a power-imbuing serum making him the world’s most powerful super spy.

Ernie is a relic of a bygone era, the living embodiment of sex, drugs, and rock and roll—so, this doesn’t make things easy for the spy organization that needs his help as they bribe, cajole, and manipulate Ernie to choose between his own self-interests and doing what's right.

The Scumbag will join Remender’s growing empire, known as Giant Generator Studios, alongside such beloved series as Death Or Glory with Bengal, Seven to Eternity with Jerome Opeña, Low with Greg Tocchini, Fear Agent with Jerome Opeña and Tony Moore, The Last Days of American Crime with Greg Tocchini, Tokyo Ghost with Sean Gordon Murphy, Black Science with Matteo Scalera, Strange Girl with Eric Nguyen, and Deadly Class with Wes Craig.

All this stunning scumbaggery available this October from Image Comics.

Werewolf by Night #1

Written by TABOO & BENJAMIN JACKENDOFF

Art by SCOT EATON

COVER by MIKE MCKONE

THE HOUR OF THE WOLF!

A new Werewolf by Night is prowling the Southwest, but all is not as it seems! A young man, a family curse, and an unholy experiment prove a dangerous combination for a small town in Arizona. All young Jake wants is to protect his people, but who will protect him from the monster within?

WEREWOLF BY NIGHT will tell the incredible tale of a young man named Jake dealing with the effects of a family curse while trying to protect his people from a mysterious corporation. As this wild adventure unfolds, Jake will learn the startling truth behind his abilities and go up against fan-favorite superhero, Red Wolf.

Taboo of the BLACK EYED PEAS and Benjamin Jackendoff team up with Scot Eaton to tell an epic tale of righteous fury and incredible transformation in the Mighty Marvel Manner that is not to be missed!

Announced in an exclusive interview with Comicbook.com, Taboo of The Black Eyed Peas will be co-writing a new Marvel comic series this April with Benjamin Jackendoff.

The pair previously worked together on a story for MARVEL COMICS 1000 that focused on Red Wolf and will now be teaming up with acclaimed comic artist Scott Eaton on WEREWOLF BY NIGHT. The series will introduce a brand-new Werewolf by Night character to the Marvel Universe in a story set in Arizona. The new Werewolf by Night will be a young man named Jake who will be dealing with the effects of a family curse while trying to protect his people. The events of the story will also be driven by the outcome of March’s OUTLAWED one-shot.

"I’m half-Hopi and half-Mexican, so we pulled a lot from my personal experience to implement that in our storytelling,” Taboo told Marvel Host Ryan Penagos. “The cool thing about this story is that although there’s a Native perspective to it, it’s not a Native story. This kid is dealing with becoming a werewolf and it’s inclusive to everyone and there’s bits and pieces for everyone to take away their own personal motivation.”

"[Scot Eaton] sees the vision, and Scot just applies it and takes it to the next level,” Taboo added when asked about his collaborator, superstar artist Scot Eaton.

“We're going through a Native lens because of my Native American heritage,” Taboo told Comicbook.com. “I always liked storytelling from a native perspective. Although I was born in the city of Los Angeles, recently I've been really connected to the Indian country or to native communities to be able to be a service and help native youth, inspire them, especially when it comes to health and wellness, and arts and music. So we built our partnership knowing that when we create, we create through a native lens…”

“I think Werewolf by Night is such an interesting character, a cool character. His mythology is really dope, and it was such an exciting opportunity to be able to revamp a new mythology and tie it into Native American storytelling,” Jackendoff added. “That's really what got us excited because they were like, ‘All right, cool. We can take the Werewolf by Night brand and stay true to the genre of it all, the creatures, the monsters, the big stuff, all that, but tie it into Native American storytelling, into a Native American background and palette, but still make it a fun adventure story about a kid.’"

Get ready to raise hell with Madam Satan in an epic Archie Horror one-shot arriving this October from the creative team of Eliot Rahal, Julius Ohta, Matt Herms, and Jack Morelli.

"We wanted to make sure that our first new title for the direct market this Fall was something retailers would be excited to present to customers old and new," said Archie Comics Co-President Alex Segura. "Playing in the world of CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA felt like a surefire bet, and pairing two rising stars like Eliot and Julius ensures that readers get an essential and engaging story. We know fans are clamoring for more Archie Horror and this one-shot is just the beginning of new stories we can tell going forward."

"For the past decade, I've been grinding it out in indy comics and some of the work I'm most proud of are my character-focused stories," said writer Eliot Rahal. "My goal with this one-shot was to bring that level of attention to Madam Satan as a person (or demon/witch if you will). I wanted to honor her and make it meaningful. The real hero is the artwork as Julias Ohta, Matt Herms and Jack Morelli bring Hell to life. I'm just so grateful to work alongside them and have this opportunity."

Edgar Allan Poe`s Snifter of Blood #1

Writers: Paul Cornell, Dean Motter

 Art: Russ Braun, Dean Motter

Cover: Jill Thompson

The SNIFTER OF TERROR returns with an all-star snark-fest under a bloody new title! Paul Cornell (Doctor Who) and Russell Braun (The Boys) reimagine Poe's "Black Cat"––as a dog! In "Atlas Shrugged" (no relation), Mr. X creator Dean Motter settles the science vs. religion debate once and for all! Plus: prose, pix, and a jaunty cover by Scary Godmother's Jill Thompson!

AHOY Comics, the independent, Syracuse-based publisher known for its comics stuffed with stories, poetry, prose fiction, and cartoons, is bringing back its snarkiest, booziest anthology under a new title: EDGAR ALLAN POE’S SNIFTER OF BLOOD. The most recent season of the hilarious parody-slash-desecration of Edgar Allan Poe will also be collected as a trade paperback just in time for the spooky holiday season.

Since its first issue debuted in 2018, the SNIFTER series has artfully mangled classic literary tales and dreamed up brand new ones with its signature blend of humor and horror. The nightmare-child of Drunk History and Tales from the Crypt, this anthology-style series features a charmingly alcohol-damaged version of Poe who presides over the woeful and witty stories created by a variety of talented artists and writers. The latest installment of the SNIFTER series, now renamed EDGAR ALLAN POE’S SNIFTER OF BLOOD, includes Paul Cornell (Doctor Who) and Russell Braun (The Boys) reimagining Poe's "Black Cat" as a dog, as well as a tale in which Mr. X creator Dean Motter settles the science vs. religion debate once and for all. The new series will feature a different cover artist each month, starting with the legendary Jill Thompson.

"Since Edgar Allan Poe is dead, we get to make any arbitrary decision we want and there's not a thing he can do about it," said AHOY editor in chief Tom Peyer. "So sometimes we just make a senseless power move out of sheer contempt for the great writer and his memory. Plus, we get to start again at #1, which should attract all of the most devoted comics collectors of 1991. Everybody wins! Except Poe."

Just prior to the new season’s publication date, the second and most recent season of the series will be available in trade paperback for the first time under the title EDGAR ALLAN POE’S SNIFTER OF TERROR, VOLUME TWO. Featuring more of the popular “Monster Serials” by Mark Russell (SECOND COMING) and Peter Snejbjerg (The Books of Magic), wherein we discover the terrifying secret origins of certain iconic cereal monsters, as well as Dean Motter and Alex Ogle’s ultimate Poe mashup “The Tell-Tale Black Cask of Usher,” the trade paperback will also feature more than a dozen additional comics stories, a generous selection of short “Poe and the Black Cat” strips by Hunt Emerson, and horrific bonus prose stories and poetry.

The trade paperback EDGAR ALLAN POE’S SNIFTER OF TERROR, VOLUME TWO will be available in comic stores on September 23 and bookstores on October 6, while the first installment of the series under its new name, EDGAR ALLAN POE’S SNIFTER OF BLOOD #1, hits stores October 21.

Tiến loves his family and friends. As a child of Vietnamese immigrants, he enjoys helping his parents learn to speak better English using fairy tales he borrows from the local library. But Tiến has a secret, and he can’t find the words to share what he’s going through.

Is there a way to tell them he’s gay?

The Magic Fish is a story that will remind us all why we fell in love with storytelling. Finding a beautiful story that we can relate to, that seeps down and touches the very core of who we are as human beings, and its ability to bring people together. Told in three parts—past, present, and fairy tale—this powerful story of a young boy exploring his identity and dealing with his fear and inability to be fully open with his family will touch the lives of so many readers.

This is the debut of author-illustrator Trung Le Nguyen, who gained popularity on social media, where he is known as @Trungles, for his gorgeous illustrations. The Magic Fish was heavily inspired by Nguyen’s own experience of coming out to his parents and as a first-generation Vietnamese American.

  • My LCS tells me they have these for me this coming Wednesday:

    Books of Magic #22
    Books of Magic #23
    Dreaming Waking Hours #2
    Dreaming Waking Hours #3

They're not listed on any of your posts for this month. (It's a jungle out there!)

That's because, by and large, they didn't come out this month. Here are their release dates, according to UCS:

    Books of Magic #22: 8/25

    Books of Magic #23: 9/22

    Dreaming: Waking Hours #2: 9/1

    Dreaming: Waking Hours #3: 10/6

I looked up the most recent one, Dreaming: Waking Hours #3, with a Tuesday, Oct. 6 release date, and it is indeed listed in "This Week in Comics: Oct. 5-11." I assume the others were listed on 8/25, 9/1 and 9/22, when they were supposed to be.

And yes, it is a jungle out there. Which is why I stay inside!

  • Amazingly, there are no DC books that interest me this week. Which is what happens when you devote half your line to The Batman Who Laughs. I do intend to get Black Magick, Stillwater, Fantastic Four, and Edgar Allen Poe's Snifter of Blood...but I can definitely wait a week to pick them up, on accounta da plague.

Also, in Genre TV, Swamp Thing has started airing on the CW! Tonight will be episode 3: "He Speaks." I'd heard it would be airing eventually, but only found out it had started last night; previous episodes should be available on the CW app & website.

  • The new Peacock service has started streaming the really good genre miniseries Mr. Mercedes (three seasons, two available on Peacock for now) that originally aired on the now-defunct Audience streaming service (AT&T). I loved the three books of Stephen King's "Bill Hodges Trilogy." Bill Hodges is the main protagonist, a retired police detective. He gets on the radar of a psychopathic killer and techie who is nicknamed Mr. Mercedes after he uses a stolen car of that brand to mow down several people. There are very good actors in all the parts and it will hold your interest. I bought the DVD sets and was happy to do it.

  • My LCS  got the Archie Madam Satan comic last week. That variant cover is really memorable, it pops on the shelf.

Wonder Woman: Agent of Peace #13

“Power Drive” by Ivan Cohen and Pop Mhan

When a super-in-sync gang of criminals bring their high-speed crime spree to Washington, D.C., it's up to Wonder Woman and guest-star Wonder Girl to bring the bad guys down! But how will they catch the criminals, who vanish without a trace after every heist?

Back in April, DC launched a new chapter in their digital publishing slate with the weekly publication of Superman: The Man of Tomorrow, Batman: Gotham Nights, Wonder Woman: Agent of Peace, and more. These issues were new to DC’s digital space, providing access to content that had previously only been printed in DC Giants for Walmart and the Direct Market. With today’s publication of Wonder Woman: Agent of Peace #13, all of DC’s Digital First slate is now original content.
