Over the Garden Wall Vol 3 Sisters of Charity OGN

BOOM! Studios is proud to announce OVER THE GARDEN WALL: THE BENEVOLENT SISTERS OF CHARITY, a brand new original graphic novel written by Sam Johns and illustrated by Jim Campbell, set in the world inspired by the Emmy® Award-winning Cartoon Network animated series, Over The Garden Wall, available in Fall 2020.

Over the Garden Wall is the hit animated television miniseries created by Patrick McHale for Cartoon Network. The show follows two half-brothers as they journey through the strange and haunting Unknown, with Beatrice, a talking bird, as their companion as they search for a way home. The show is based on McHale’s animated short film Tome of the Unknown, which was produced as part of Cartoon Network Studios’ shorts development program. Over the Garden Wall was broadcast throughout the week of November 3, 2014 to November 7, 2014.

It’s another day in the Unknown but Wirt isn’t feeling too well so when they come across a stately building run by the Benevolent Sisters of Charity who take care of all sick souls, he jumps at the chance to be pampered by the doting nurses. When the nurses frown on animals entering the facility, Wirt abandons Beatrice and Greg’s frog to the elements, then drags Greg with him into the open arms of the Benevolent Sisters. Those arms wrap a bit tight, though, and even when he’s feeling better, the Sisters don’t seem to want him to leave. And where did Greg go?

Sam Johns is a writer living in Brooklyn, NY. They graduated from Savannah College of Art and Design in 2012 and have been making comics ever since. When they’re not telling their own stories, they love to read horror novels aloud to their dog Khaleesi.

“The first time I saw Over the Garden Wall, I accidentally binged it in a single day. Since then I’ve watched it in one sitting many times… but, you know, intentionally. I’m the oldest of six siblings, so it was an absolute joy to write about the incredible bond between brothers, and the sometimes incredible fights that come with that closeness.” said writer Sam Johns. “I was even able to insert some of my Mom into the story! She’s a nurse! But, like, a much better at her job, less scary nurse. I also think growing up in Pennsylvania gave me an edge. The forests there are just like the Edelwoods, and I took a lot of inspiration from hiking there with my friends!”

Jim Campbell is a cartoonist, illustrator, comic book colorist, and animator who served as a storyboard artist for Patrick McHale’s Over the Garden Wall miniseries for Cartoon Network in 2014. He has illustrated various Over the Garden Wall comic books as well as an original graphic novel Over the Garden Wall: Distillatoria for BOOM! Studios. Campbell has been drawing comics off and on since teaming up with the Meathaüs collective in 2001. He has been a color artist for Dark Horse, Marvel, Spongebob Comics, Mad Magazine, and Tony Millionaire. In his spare time, he plays in the Brooklyn band Paper Fleet.

“It’s exciting to step into the world of Over the Garden Wall with the talented Sam Johns. I’m thrilled to show fans of the show exactly what Greg, Wirt, and Beatrice are up to now as they run into yet another group of mysterious folks in the depths of the woods and try their best to survive the experience.” said artist, Jim Campbell.

OVER THE GARDEN WALL: THE BENEVOLENT SISTERS OF CHARITY is the latest release from BOOM! Studios’ award-winning KaBOOM! imprint, home to comics for middle grade and younger readers including licensed series such as Adventure Time, Steven Universe, Regular Show, Ben 10, and Over The Garden Wall, along with original series like Just Beyond: The Scare School by R.L. Stine and Kelly & Nichole Matthews, Hex Vet by Sam Davies, RuinWorld by Derek Laufman, Hotel Dare by Terry Blas and Claudia Aguirre, and Pandora’s Legacy by Kara Leopard, Kelly & Nichole Matthews.

“As usual, Wirt just wants some assurance that everything will be okay but The Unknown is mysterious and never exactly what it seems, so trusting the wrong people in the forest can end badly for all involved.” said Matthew Levine, Editor, BOOM! Studios. “Sam and Jim guide our young adventurers through this particular health scare with plenty of twists and surprises along the way for fans of Over the Garden Wall.”

American Vampire 1976 #1

America is broken. Trust between the government and the American public has crumbled. Paranoia reigns supreme. It’s 1976, not 2020, and this horrifying tale is the concluding chapter of the Eisner Award-winning American Vampire, reuniting Scott Snyder and Rafael Albuquerque for a nine-issue miniseries!

“Scott, Rafael, and I, we cut our teeth together on American Vampire 10 years ago,” said executive editor Mark Doyle. “Returning to finish the story we started a decade ago is a thrill. Working on American Vampire 1976 has been so creepy and cool, especially because the parallels between 70’s paranoia and today are really chilling…”

Skinner Sweet has exhausted all efforts to regain his lost immortality. With his powers and purpose gone, he is now determined to go out with a bang. At a seedy motorcycle rally in the desert where Skinner’s closer than ever to his death wish, Pearl Jones and a shocking partner track him down for one last, desperate mission: the force known as the Gray Trader and its minions are tunneling through the bowels of the world to unleash hell on Earth—just in time for America’s bicentennial. With catastrophe looming, it’s up to Skinner and Pearl to reconcile and change the course of history—or die trying.

“The characters in ‘76 are in a really dark place in terms of the fight against evil,” says Snyder. “The '70s mirror our current era in many ways: the anxiety, the fear, and the re-examination of American identity. The book opens on Skinner Sweet working outside of Vegas doing death-defying Evel Knievel-style stunts, trying to die. There’s a kind of Son of Sam plot in New York City with Cal and Travis, a political thriller plot with Felicia, and all sorts of '70s iconography. It’s my favorite arc so far.”

The series that launched the careers of superstars Scott Snyder and Rafael Albuquerque returns for nine final issues and the closing chapter of the legacy of American Vampire.

American Vampire 1976 #1 by Scott Snyder and Rafael Albuquerque will publish on October 6, 2020, and carry DC’s Black Label descriptor, identifying the content as appropriate for readers ages 17+. The book will retail for $3.99 with cover artwork by Albuquerque and a variant cover by Dustin Nguyen.

Sonic The Hedgehog: Bad Guys #1 (of 4)

IDW Publishing and SEGA® of America, Inc. announced that Sonic The Hedgehog™ comic book fans will get a double dose of fun this summer, as fan-favorite Sonic illustrator Evan Stanley will be taking over as both artist AND writer beginning with Sonic The Hedgehog #33, while a dastardly delicious spin-off miniseries, Sonic: Bad Guys, will debut from writer Ian Flynn and artist Jack Lawrence.

Artist Evan Stanley takes on double-duty as series writer for the ongoing Sonic The Hedgehog series with an action-packed, friendship-fueled new arc! The Metal Virus is gone, but things aren’t quite back to normal. Tails and Sonic try to solve how to fix their damaged ally, Omega. Elsewhere, Rouge and Shadow team up with Cream to win replacement parts for Omega through… Chao races! Debuting in issue #33, the “Chao Races and Badnik Bases!” storyline serves as the perfect jumping-on point for new readers!

“Sonic the Hedgehog comics have been a constant source of joy and inspiration for me for well over ten years, and the truth is, this opportunity is a dream I didn’t believe could come true,” says Stanley. “The world of Sonic has a truly amazing creative legacy, and I’ve always pushed myself to make my contributions as meaningful and worthwhile as they can be — and that’s more important than ever now. I hope I can deepen the world of IDW’s Sonic The Hedgehog comics, exploring new places and characters while continuing to deliver exciting adventures about Sonic and his friends!”

Meanwhile, the four-issue Sonic: Bad Guys miniseries — scribed by series mainstay Ian Flynn and artist Jack Lawrence — asks the question: Whatever happened to Dr. Starline, former evil assistant and life-long fanboy to Dr. Eggman? The answer: The shadowy scientist is back to his evil antics… and what better place to concoct new nefarious plans than one of Eggman’s abandoned bases? With badniks guarding the entrance, Dr. Starline must recruit some familiar and not-so-friendly faces for help!

“It’s been a thrill to see fans embrace the comic’s original characters, and one of those fan-favorites is Dr. Starline,” says Flynn. “We’ve known him up until now as a die-hard Eggman fanboy, but what happens when your idol outright disses you? After exploring the power of trust and friendship in Tangle & Whisper, Bad Guys is going to be a completely different type of adventure.”

“Actors often say they most enjoy playing villains, and I have to be honest: I feel the same way about drawing them!” says Lawrence. “There’s just something so fun about drawing a sneaky look or evil grin, hands rubbing together in greed or anticipation of some nefarious deed. Sonic’s villains are some of the worst people you can possibly imagine, so I’m super excited to show just how vile some of them can be!”

“We’re so excited to have Evan stepping up on the main book,” says editor David Mariotte. “She has an amazing sense of storytelling as an artist and it definitely translates to her writing. Meanwhile, we get to have Ian cut loose and write his ‘bwa-ha-ha’-iest baddies in a fantastic companion miniseries that closely ties into Evan’s story. Everyone involved on the IDW Sonic team is coordinating super-hard to make both series a vital Sonic reading experience!”

Sonic The Hedgehog #33 will be available with multiple cover variants for retailers and fans to enjoy, including Cover A by Evan Stanley, Cover B by Gigi Dutreix, and a Retailer Incentive edition by Nathalie Fourdraine. Sonic: Bads Guys #1 will be available with Cover A by Aaron Hammerstrom, Cover B by Diana Skelly, and two Retailer Incentive editions by Jack Lawrence and Bracardi Curry, respectively.

Writer/Art: Nick Brokenshire

Art: Ilias Kyriazis

32 pages / FC / $3.99

An exciting new era begins! Each issue in this monthly series will feature two stories starring all your favorite Star Wars characters! Between the events of The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, Poe and Finn have taken Rey to a remote planet to continue her Jedi training. But they’re surprised to find that the First Order’s reach extends far and wide. Plus, an all-new tale of the Dark Lord of the Sith himself, Darth Vader!

Transformers/Back to the Future #1 (of 4)

Two of the greatest science fiction franchises of the 1980s will collide this fall in an all-new comic book crossover event, Transformers / Back to the Future! Written by Cavan Scott (bestselling author and writer of IDW’s Star Wars Adventures) and illustrated by Juan Samu (Marvel Action: Black Panther), the four-issue miniseries will debut in October from IDW Publishing!

In the debut issue, Marty McFly returns from the adventure of a lifetime to a new, better Hill Valley… that is, until Marty and his friend Doc Brown’s time machine attracts the attention of the Decepticons. With one small mistake, Marty finds himself once again thrust into action to unravel a Decepticon plot in the past, present, and future… now with the help of a new converting time machine, the Autobot called Gigawatt!

“When I was asked to write the official crossover comic, I could only shout ‘Great Scott’ and dive in,” says writer Cavan Scott. “It’s the perfect fit. Both Transformers and Back to the Future are packed with adventure, humor, and (most importantly) heart. Plus, it gave me a chance to play with multiple Transformers timelines, harkening back to some of my favorite Transformers storylines of the ‘80s, while also bringing in elements of all three Back to the Future movies. Look out for classic characters, both human and Cybertronian, and a few surprises along the way!”

Artist Juan Samu says, “All my life I have waited for this moment! This amazing project, apart from being an authentic journey through time for me, has brought out my inner child in every scene. The Autobots, Decepticons, Marty, and Doc are so iconic that I feel super-excited to be able to draw them! Thanks to IDW, NBC Universal, and Hasbro for giving us this opportunity!”

“Transformers and Back to the Future have quite a bit in common,” says John Barber, Editor-in-Chief of IDW Publishing. “They’ve both inspired multiple generations of fans, they are both — at their heart — about characters and change, and they both have at least one really cool car. We’re extremely excited at IDW to get to bring these two worlds together!”

Transformers / Back to the Future #1 will be available with multiple cover variants for retailers and fans to enjoy, including Cover A by series artist Juan Samu, Cover B by Phil Murphy (Star Trek vs. Transformers), and two Retailer Incentive editions — one illustrated by Dan Schoening (Transformers / Ghostbusters: Ghosts of Cybertron) with the second featuring a photo of the hotly anticipated AUTOBOT GIGAWATT toy.

Timed perfectly with the announcement of the Transformers / Back to the Future miniseries, IDW Publishing is partnering with the Fleet Science Center of San Diego for “The Science of Back to the Future,” a discussion of science and science fiction hosted by Comic-Con International as part of their “Comic-Con@Home” programming schedule. Posting online on Thursday, 07/23/20, at 3:00pm, the panel will showcase Cavan Scott and Juan Samu as guests to discuss their work on the upcoming crossover, alongside panelists John Barber; Saura Naderi, Outreach Director at the Halıcıoğlu Data Science Institute at UC San Diego; Dr. Lisa Will, Fleet Science Center Resident Astronomer; and moderator Andrea Decker.

First Knife is an environmental sci-fi adventure that's equal parts Conan the Barbarian, Nausicaä, and Zardoz. In the hot ruins of far-future North America, a slave stumbles across an ancient and bloody power. A conqueror bargains with godlike beings. A soldier tries to bring back his lost world. As the full moon approaches, the remaining humans of Earth find themselves standing between the forces that once nearly destroyed it. A post-apocalyptic, yet hopeful story, First Knife will collect issues #1-5 of the Protector series.

Getting It Together #1 (of 4)

Bestselling writer Sina Grace (Iceman, Self-Obsessed) and popular producer/host and writer Omar Spahi (Dreamer comics podcast, Xenoglyphs) team up with debut comics artist and lauded illustrator Jenny D. Fine, colorist Mx. Struble, and letterer Sean Konot to co-create the upcoming series Getting It Together. It will launch from Image Comics this June.

“Getting It Together came from Omar and I wanting to show how modern friendships survive in the era of open relationships, online dating, mental health awareness, and so on,” Grace told The Hollywood Reporter in their exclusive scoop of the announcement. “The struggle is real for Lauren, Jack, Sam and Annie. I couldn't be luckier to make this book with my IRL friends Jenny, Shaun, and Omar.”

"To me, this book is about personal growth,” Spahi added when talking to THR. “We put a lot of ourselves in this project, and we explore a lot of things you don't see people talk about in comics, because just like everyone else, we're all in the process of getting it together.”

A fresh, updated spin on twenty-something, found-family dramedies like Friends, Getting It Together follows best friends Sam and Jack. Sam is dating Lauren—Jack’s indie rocker sister and roommate—and when Sam and Lauren open up their long-term relationship, skyrocketing tensions send social shockwaves through their friend group and the entire Bay Area. And Jack, caught in the middle of it all, may be forced to take sides in a conflict he never wanted to be a part of. Life gets pretty messy when you’re in your ’20s and your friends are your family.

Fine said also to THR: “I’ve never felt so supported as an artist, and I’m excited—and a little terrified—to share it with the world,” said Fine in the coverage.

Also: A cheeky, fashion forward homage variant for Getting It Together #1 by Omar Spahi and Sina Grace, with art by Jenny D. Fine, colors by Mx. Struble, and letters by Sean Konot, showcasing artwork by Kevin Wada. This Getting It Together #1 variant cover is an homage to the iconic Sex and the City opening.

This nod to the famous scene wherein Carrie gets splashed on an NYC street corner by a passing bus, perfectly connects the “found family” theme the beloved HBO franchise was known for with the Getting It Together vibe. This new series follows a group of 20-something friends and the interpersonal drama they encounter living in the City (in this case, the Bay Area).

The Getting It Together #1 Kevin Wada variant sits alongside the similar Getting It Together #1 cover homage, which re-imagines the opening credits scene from Friends.

Read it again! Image Comics/Skybound Entertainment will revisit the historic independent series that took the entertainment world by storm 17 years ago—The Walking Dead by Robert Kirkman (Fire Power, Oblivion Song) and Charlie Adlard (Vampire State Building)—with newly, fully colored issues. Featuring the stunning work of the masterful Dave McCaig, these new issues will launch in October with The Walking Dead Deluxe #1. Each issue will include a new installment of “The Cutting Room Floor,” featuring Kirkman's original handwritten plots along with commentary on abandoned storylines and plot points that may have changed along the way.

This definitive presentation of the story will NOT be collected into trade paperback any time soon, so fans and new readers should not trade-wait to experience this fully colored edition of the popular survival horror series. Issue #1 will be available on October 7. Each following month two issues will be released.

With everything the Champions stand for in jeopardy, the stakes have never been higher. United, the Champions will rise up against any obstacles that dare stand in their way, including the dangerous new government taskforce known as C.R.A.D.L.E.

“Why are we going down there, anyway; some mystery to uncover, treasure to find? Why are we here?”

Far across the Western Ocean on a mist-shrouded island guarded by giant sea monsters, heroes come to explore the mysterious dungeons that lie below the surface. None have yet to reach the bottom and return to tell the tale. Each party gathers daily for a new round of potion-making, sword-sharpening, armor-buying, and dungeon-crawling, and after hours of leveling up in dangerous battles with monstrous creatures from the depths, they rest and try again the next day when everything repeats. That is, until one adventurer stops to ask why. Is it endlessly exciting, or simply endless?

In a witty, genre-defying tale of magic, mystery, and philosophy, brave warriors must learn the difference between diversion and escape as they try to break the cycle of a penultimate quest in which the final fantasy never arrives.

Betty Cooper and Val Smith are best friends ready to start middle school. They've always done everything together--taken the same classes, played the same games, and created the world of Sparklespacelandia in Betty's backyard together--so naturally, Betty assumes they'll continue to be an unbreakable duo once the school year starts. But Val finds herself drawn toward pursuing a music elective and does it without Betty at her side. Suddenly Betty's on her own for the first time since Val moved to the neighborhood, and she's struggling to deal with being lumped in with the loser drama class--that just happens to be dominated by snotty and powerful Veronica Lodge! Even the presence of other friends like Archie, Jughead, and Sabrina isn't making Betty feel better about her estrangement from Val. Will Betty and Val find a new way to connect, or has middle school ended their friendship for good?

Sarah Kuhn and J. Bone deliver an authentic and funny tale of middle-school life as they reimagine the iconic gang from Riverdale into contemporary middle-grade students. Full of lively dialogue and stunningly hilarious art, the dynamics of friendship and school struggles are as classic as the characters themselves--and fresh and engaging for today's readers.

The “Red-Headed Stranger” Comes to Comics

Little things I should have said and done

I just never took the time

– Willie Nelson

In the ever-growing line of comics biographies in NBM’s catalog, we’re now happy to add the saga of one of the great country singers.

Recognized all over the world for his music, philanthropy, and activism, Willie has been writing and performing for adoring crowds since he was a child in Hill County, Texas.

But success did not come to him easy. He always was a maverick (and proud of it). He did not fit in neatly to country styles of his day. But he labored on and you might say the world caught up with him. And ended up accepting him big time.

Now, he’s an American icon.  Winner of 13 Grammy Awards, 10 CMA Awards, 7 American Music Awards, Inductee of the Country Music Hall of Fame, recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors, and the Gershwin Prize, the lifetime award of the Library of Congress.

There have been tragedies, missteps, IRS troubles, good times and bad along the way, but Willie continues to shine his positive outlook and project his humble voice out into the world. In this graphic novel biography, all the chapters represent a different era of his life and struggles -- each illustrated by a unique indie comics talent.

Researched, written, and partially illustrated by TJ Kirsch (Pride of the Decent Man), this graphic novel biography, assembles several independent comic artists, each with the task of drawing a different chapter in Nelson’s life.

More on Daddy Daughter Day:

Jeff Bridges and Isabelle Bridges-Boesch Invite You to Celebrate DADDY DAUGHTER DAY

An All New Children’s Book Illustrated and Hand Lettered by Jeff Bridges and Written By His Daughter, Isabelle Bridges-Boesch, Will Be Published by Dark Horse Comics

On Sale October 7, 2020, Ahead of National Father Daughter Day, October 11, 2020

MILWAUKIE, Ore., (October 6, 2020), Jeff Bridges is an iconic actor, a photographer and painter, a musician and sculptor, and a husband and a father. And now he’s taking on a new role: as the illustrator of the children’s book Daddy Daughter Day, written by his eldest daughter, Isabelle Bridges-Boesch. The hardcover children’s book will be published by Dark Horse Comics on October 7, 2020, ahead of National Father Daughter Day, October 11, 2020.

Why do we need reasons for doing something so wonderful and important as spending time with the ones we love? I don’t know, but we often seem to need a reason,” said Jeff Bridges. “Need a reason? Daddy Daughter Day gives us a wonderful one.”

“I had the idea for this book for years,” said Isabelle Bridges-Boesch. “After I became a mom, I decided to write a book about having a day of adventures with my father when I was a little girl. When I finally shared the idea for the book with my dad, he immediately agreed to create the illustrations and the making of the book became our latest adventure.”

In Daddy Daughter Day, Bell wakes up, determined to create a special day for her and her father. Their Daddy Daughter Day sparks a series of adventures that turns the house and the backyard into a clay workshop, a beauty parlor, and a circus.

Equally charming, whimsical, and magical, Daddy Daughter Day will inspire new family traditions and encourage fathers and daughters to celebrate their relationship. The 56-page Daddy Daughter Day arrives October 7, 2020 and retails for $17.99.
