DC's Digital Backlist - Secret Society of Super Villains spotlight!
A while back, I logged some week-to-week posts on DC’s digital reprint program through Comixology. It’s been a while, and their digital offerings have matured, so I thought I’d take another look at what they’re adding each week. Currently, they seem to be doing about 30 books a week. I might not list all the issue numbers going forward – if the 90s Superman titles continue moving forward at two of each a week, there’s not much value in listing each issue. But let’s take a look at this week’s, and let’s see where the patterns take us, shall we?
90s Superman: DC is following the 90s Superman titles (soon to be the 2000s Superman, as this week’s titles are from December 1999) pretty quickly, giving us 8 issues of the books every week. There’s a lot of material to get through, but that’s still an admirable clip. We may only have a few more weeks of this, judging by Action Comics (the one title of the bunch that doesn’t change its numbering and continues for a long while) – 761 is the most recent issue, and Action already seems to be in the digital library from 769 on. Superman, Adventures of Superman and Superman: Man of Steel have bigger gaps, though.

DC has been adding two issues of Arion: Lord of Atlantis a week for the last 6 weeks. There are 35 issues and a special, so there's a way to go before the series is completed.

DCCP started out at a faster pace, but has been going two a week for a little while now. There are about 20 issues to go. Bonus: More Arion this week, in issue 75!
Guy Gardner: Warrior: 33
11 issues to go.
Huntress: 19, 4-issue 1994 series
We wrap up the Cavalieri/Staton ongoing that introduced Helena Bertinelli, and then power through a Chuck Dixon mini from 1994. Will Huntress return next week, or will we move on?
Justice League America (Bwa-ha-ha) 51, 52
This one has a ways to go before having everything available.
Manhunter: 34
Four more issues till it’s all there!
Mister Miracle: 23-25
This wraps up the 70s run – Kirby and then Marshall Rogers, it’s all there! (I think DC also recently wrapped the 70s Return of the New Gods run, too.)
Superman (Bronze Age): 233
This is an interesting one. The Kryptonite Nevermore cover – I’m surprised it wasn’t available before this. Will DC continue from here? Their 70s Superman offerings on Comixology are paltry.
Wanderers: 7, 8
This 80s Legion spinoff ran 13 issues, so we’re almost there.
Wonder Woman (Silver Age): 130, 131
DC has been making silver age Wonder Woman stories available, probably wishing to expand their catalog in anticipation of the movie. At this point the silver age issues go from 112-131, with a couple of gaps.
Swamp Thing (Diggle/Dysart run): 25
4 more issues to go.
Trigger: 5
This Vertigo sci-fi series lasted 8 issues. I don’t remember it at all.
That’s a pretty exhaustive look at this week’s offerings. Next week, I’ll probably just note new additions (what will replace Mister Miracle? The '89 and '96 series have already been collected, so we might be in for something new. And there might be more Huntress comics that haven't been reprinted yet, but Comixology has a bunch of them listed already, and the Bat-universe is so sprawling it's tough to search), unexpected omissions, breaks from the patterns, and go forward from there.

From what I can tell, DC didn't release any single back issues this week. Its "New and Noteworthy" section only has two trades: Road to Perdition 2, and Secret Society of Super-Villains volume 1. It looks like DC also released a deluxe edition of Batman: The Man Who Laughs, but that's not in New & Noteworthy.
DC's having a Halloween sale. It might be a good time to pick up the collection of the Neal Adams Deadman series from a few years ago -- the books he's been doing for DC lately seem like bonkers fun. Plenty of other stuff on sale, too, including lots of single issues of DC's 70s "mystery" titles.

Another week without new DC back issues on Comixology. The only two books in New and Noteworthy are Stormwatch Volume 2 (New 52 era) and the Deluxe edition of Solo, selling for a ridiculous $35.
The DC sale is centered around Justice -- Justice League, Justice Society, Young Justice, Injustice, etc. It's election day... let's get our Justice on.

I wonder if it has to do with the upcoming DC Infinite, or whatever the replacement for DC Universe is called... if all digital resources are being used for that for the time being. And also, well... those layoffs that happened months ago could be hitting even more now. California law means employers have to give employees 90 days notice of termination in layoffs, and those 90 days expired last week, I think. So someone in the department might have been hanging on at DC until he or she found something new, then took it.
Regardless, this thread isn't nearly so much fun for me to update these days.
Speaking of which, this week's two(!) collections being released are Road to Perdition by Max Allen Collins and Richard Piers Rainer, and the fondly forgotten Superman: Grounded, by J. Michael Straczinski and a bunch of people hired to clean up his mess, including Chris Roberson.
The DC sale this week is "Back to the 90s," and the single issues, at least, seem a little haphazard. That said, I might pick up a collection of Kyle Rayner Green Lantern comics, since I never gave his book a fiar shake when it came out.

Comixology has several categories on sale for half off or better this week. Includes selected Marvel, Humanoids, Dark Horse, and others. A couple of DC lists, too, which allowed me to clear about half of my remaining Vertigo wish list. I guess I'm holding out for another dedicated Vertigo sale for the rest.

I was looking at some of DC's sale, and it seems a little haphazard. Saw the American Vampire: Second Cycle trades on sale for $5.99 apiece, but the earlier trades aren't on sale -- or at least not discounted so deeply.
And there's nothing new in DC's New and Noteworthy section -- no single issues, no trades, nothing. DC has a few new trades -- Underworld Unleashed, Superman vs Braniac, The Phantom Zone -- but I'm not sure if these are alsp being reprinted physically or what.

....and again, no back issues are being offered today.
The sale is a Black Friday sale. Collections only, with about 500 of them for $4.99, and another 1,500 or so at $5.99 or higher. But tons of material to choose from!
All the same, I might save my money and put it toward a DCU Infinity subscription.

Again, no new DC back issues. The sale is on Events. The most recent stuff on sale would be the individual issues of Event Leviathan, the spy agency crossover, which you can buy for 99 cents each. It's a series I liked a lot, and one that I think will have a lot of bearing on Bendis's future work with DC. (But if you're not a Bendis fan, I'll warn you: This is pretty Bendis-y Bendis.)

It looks like tomorrow's launch of DC Universe Infinite has spurred new arrivals in DC's digital backlist. Here's what arrived today, ten comics in all:
Batman 199: Batman 196 and 197 snuck onto Comixology when I wasn't looking, back in October & early November. (198 is MIA, but it's an all-reprint 80-page Giant.) Comixology also allows pre-orders of issues 201 and 202, to be released in the next two weeks. (200 has been available for some time.)Batman: Dreamland 1: A one-shot by Alan Grant and Norm Breyfogle from 2000, dealing with Area 51.
Hardware 1: A couple collections have been released, but not the single issues. Looks like issue 2's on deck for February 2.
Static 1: Another Milestone book, again releasing part of an available trade in single issues. Again, look for issue 2 in two weeks.
Stalker 1-3: The first three issues of this Paul Levitz/Steve Ditko/Wally Wood fantasy series arrive in a bunch. Issue 4 is scheduled for next week.
JLA Incarnations 7: I can't believe this wasn't on the Gap List. This miniseries finally concludes.
Super Friends 34: Skipping issues 32 and 33, we jump right to issue 34...with issues 35 and 36 available in the coming weeks.
Spectre (1987) 31: The final issue; 29 and 30 were skipped. I'll be adding these (and the missing Super Friends issues) to The Gap List.
There's also a Vertigo sale -- looks like it's entirely collections. From what I hear, Vertigo will be more prominent in DC Universe Infinite than it was on the previous app.
