Valiant returns!

It's all over the Twitters that Valiant Comics are returning. ABC News has a story here and CBR interviewed a couple of the principals here.

As loathe as I am to send people off-site, read those stories if you must. But just hearing the news raises the question: Do we want Valiant back? Can they possibly succeed in the current environment? And will Stephen Colbert make fun of the name Ninjak?

  • ...Okay , the Gold Key/Western-originated characters are , obviously , ruled out...

You know , for all the talk about it I've done upon this board , I was never , even , able to FIND any of the new Atlas comics in eithe rof the two LCSs I've had contact/intercourse with in the last month !!!!!!!!!

  • ...Oh , and , getting either further off-topic here , o Captain , my Captain...Re your post about the DC re-vamp in either of two long lines:

Do you think DC is going to Brand new Day-ize Superman and Lois's marriage in the new order , given your comment about wanting a new Lois solo book ?

Do we really need regular " Well , Lois , you've learned your lesson , I hope , about trying to play tricks to learn my secret identity but I'm just going to let you steam in that Cat-Head identity a little longer..." stories ?

      Another " adopting an American Indican child/becoming a sistah " one ???

I mean , those were ( semi- ) okay back in the Silver & Bronze , respectively ,  Ages , but...

      I mean , if they're going to single-ize her...

Oh , and in the present New Earth DCU...is it , in fact , known that Superman has a secret identity ??? The fact that , back during the SA DCU , it was generally known I guess that Super had a secret identity somewhere , well...

  • Actually, Emerkeith, that's NOT the Lois Lane I'd like to see. As I said before, I want a book that demonstrates to me why she deserves to be Superman's mate. Whether they're married or un-married, she ought to be a partner, and not a pest. When people say "Lois Lane" the first thing I think of is her 1960s persona, and I'm probably not alone. So I'd really like a book that would make people, including me, forget those 1960s stories ever happened. (Although I still want Archives of all of 'em!)

Getting back to Valiant, what does it mean that they can't use Solar, Magnus or Turok? (Valiant never used Samson, Spektor, or any other Gold Key/Western characters, so they're not relevant.) How central were those characters to the Valiant line? How does Rai exist without Magnus?

  • ...I was never much a Valiant fan , so that's purty rhetorical here...
  • I can't think of many Valiant characters not connected to the Gold Key characters.  There's X-O Manowar, Eternal Warrior, Archer and Armstrong, and Ninjak (have fun with that one, Colbert), but I can't think of any others at this time.  Maybe someone else can.

  • The lead characters of Timewalker, Eternal Warrior and Archer & Armstrong (minus Archer) were three immortal brothers who'd been around since caveman times. The Eternal Warrior character led an organization that, like the current S.H.I.E.L.D., had been around forever, too, and had employed famous people like Isaac Newton and Michelangelo. I remember enjoying how different their personalities were, and that both EW and Timewalker (which is self-explanatory) could be set just about anywhere in history.

Harbinger was the first title, and seemed to be a set-up for the whole line. It was basically a twist on X-Men: Super-powered people were being born (called "Harbingers," and thus the title), and Tojo Harada, a Xavier-like guy with mental powers who was the first Harbinger, was recruiting them to save the world, except he was really a bad guy who wanted to conquer the world, and if you didn't help him voluntarily, he'd kidnap you and force you. So Harbinger focused on a group of teenagers (of course) who were on the run from Harada. Other Harbingers showed up in other titles, but it didn't become the overriding idea it seemed like it was going to be at first.

I vaguely remember enjoying some others, although not all the time, and some of them are from VH2 (the second version of the characters, after Acclaim bought the company). Titles like X-O Manowar, Second Life of Dr. Mirage, Quantum & Woody, Trinity Angels and Shadowman come to mind. I remember thinking Ninjak had a pretty dumb premise, but had terrific art. Was that Joe Quesada?

  • The only Valiant titles I followed were Archer and Armstrong and The Second Life of Dr. Mirage, so I'd be glad to have those back, if they are coming back.

Oh, yeah, and Quantum and Woody! I'd really like to have that one back, too!

  • Quantum & Woody was darn funny.
  • Long time Legionnaires likely remember that I am a HUGE Quantum & Woody fan. Unfortunately, neither Priest nor Bright were mentioned when Jason Kotharl listed returning creators.

The Gold Key characters were crucial to the original Valiant Universe but not as integral to VH2 (Acclaim). From what I gather, these new series will be VH3.

  • I'm confused.

I thought Shooter was writing some of the Valiant characters over at Dark Horse.
