So after many years of gentle and not so gentle prodding I have finally started watching Doctor Who.  In the past I have seen snippets of the new series, and generally walked away muttering “…alright …that was odd…don’t see much point in that.” However my friends BatMatt and Doc kept suggesting I try it (much the same way we kept suggesting Rich try watching Firefly…) and since I share a lot of tastes in
common when it comes to TV shows and comics a few months ago I relented and let Doc know that I had come to terms with fact that someday I would eventually ended up watching some Doctor Who but needed to know where to start.

Fast forward to two weeks ago when my father had me open a Netflix account so we could figure out why Netflix streaming wasn’t working for him (no streaming outside the 50 states and DC…you lose out if you live in a Commonwealth of the US it turns out…bummer).  Since I had started the clock on my 2 week trial I figured I might as well take advantage of it once we were back in Rochester.

So early last week I started out watching Season 1 of the New Doctor Who series, starring Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor. The first 13 episodes are available via Netflix streaming, and I have watched 12.

If you haven’t watched the series yet…you might as well stop reading unless you want to be spoiled as to how I reacted…

Good lord almighty, I LOVED this last episode.  I've liked the Moffat-Smith era, but this was the first episode that I thought they hit the heart as well as RTD and Tennant did in their best episodes.  The talk between older Amy and Rory through the TARDIS door was brutal...in a good way.
So, who was in the Doctor's room? Tracy has her opinion and I have mine. Perhaps a more significant question is, "Will this question ever be answered?" Tracy says yes, I say no.
I say it won't be answered either, but I think it is just a version of himself, since he fears his own destructive power in his companions lives. I am not done thinking about the episode. I thought at first that I wasn't into, but found myself crying at the Amelia and Doctor scenes before the end. It would have made more sense emotionally for them to leave after last week, but I can see how it makes sense for the doctor to drop them off after this one.
Teresa Jusino over at Tor.com has really great essay on why there are problems fitting in this week's resolution with Amy's overall character arc.Tor.com : God Complex

Saturday's episode was probably my least favorite of the season so far. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't particularly good. After last week's denouement, this week's episode seemed to be just marking time until next week's season finale. The Doctor mentions Star Trek for what I'm guessing is the first time ever. That was pretty cool.

This was by no means a "heavyweight" episode, but they don't all have to be.  I like that the 45-minute format allows the show to do the occasional lightweight, comedy episode.  And as a comedy episode, I like this one just fine.  There was some very funny stuff here.

I do have two problems "with" this episode, but neither spoils my enjoyment of the episode as a stand alone "thing."

First, I really dislike using heavyweight villains like the Cybermen for comedy episodes.  Yes, we got a couple of good jokes (and the BBC got some merchandising) out of the cybermats, but there's really nothing here that couldn't have been swapped out for a "villainous race of the week."

Second, a lightwieght episode here is another example of the really awful pacing of this season (or, at least, this half-season).  If we are supposed to be building to a big, dramatic finish, dropping a comedy episode here just drains away the tension we ought to be feeling.  Ah, well.

I wonder if it's too late to rename Action Lad?

Rose referred to Spock by name during the Eccleston series.
That's right, in "The Empty Child".
"You've redecorated.  I don't like it."
"I moved. It's a different house."
“... but he prefers to be called ‘Stormageddon, Dark Lord of All.’”
