POWER TO THE PEOPLE (video)

Power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people, right on

Say we want a revolution
We better get on right away
Well you get on your feet
And into the street

Singing power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people, right on

A million workers working for nothing
You better give 'em what they really own
We got to put you down
When we come into town

Singing power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people, right on

I gotta ask you comrades and brothers
How do you treat you own woman back home
She got to be herself
So she can free herself

Singing power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people, right on
Now, now, now, now

Oh well, power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people, right on

Yeah, power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people, right on

I have this on vinyl as well CD, but I never knew there was a video.

SILENT NIGHT / 7 O'CLOCK NEWS

I wasn’t going to use “Riot in Cell Block #9” because it’s about a prison riot, but in 1970, Mike Love of the Beach Boys updated the lyrics to make it more topical.

STUDENT DEMONSTRATION TIME

[Here is the original to compare: RIOT IN CELL BLOCK #9]

Starting out with Berkeley Free Speech

And later on at People's Park

The winds of change fanned into flames

Student demonstrations spark

Down to Isla Vista where police felt so harassed

They called the special riot squad of the L. A. County Sheriff

Well there's a riot going on

There's a riot going on

There's a riot going on

Student demonstration time

The violence spread down South to where Jackson State brothers

Learned not to say nasty things about Southern policemen's mothers

Nothing much was said about it and really next to nothing done

The pen is mightier than the sword, but no match for a gun

Well there's a riot going on

There's a riot going on

America was stunned on May 4, 1970

When rally turned to riot up at Kent State University

They said the students scared the Guard

Though the troops were battle dressed

Four martyrs earned a new degree

The Bachelor of Bullets

I know we're all fed up with useless wars and racial strife

But next time there's a riot, well, you best stay out of sight

Well there's a riot going on

There's a riot going on

Well there's a riot going on

Student demonstration time

Stay away when there's a riot going on

Student demonstration

Stay away when there's a riot going on

Student demonstration

Stay away when there's a riot going on

Student demonstration

Stay away when there's a riot going on

It's student demonstration

Stay away when there's a riot going on

Student demonstration

Stay away when there's a riot going on

Student demonstration

Stay away when there's a riot going on

It's student demonstration

Stay away when there's a riot going on

Student demonstration

BOURGEOIS BLUES

When Tracy found out my intention to circulate Ledbelly's original version of this song among my co-workers, she forbade me because it's not "work friendly." No problem... I like the Taj Mahal version just as much, and it cleans up the objectionable word... in one instance, anyway. I finally settled on the Pete Seegar version, less effective, but still good. You may choose for yourself...

STRANGE FRUIT

Southern trees bear a strange fruit
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees

Pastoral scene of the gallant South California
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth
Scent of magnolia, sweet and fresh
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh

Here is a fruit for the crows to pluck
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck
For the sun to rot, for the tree to drop
Here is a strange and bitter crop

GOD BLESS THE CHILD

Them that's got shall get
Them that's not shall lose
So the Bible said and it still is news
Mama may have, Papa may have
But God bless the child that's got his own
That's got his own

Yes, the strong gets more
While the weak ones fade
Empty pockets don't ever make the grade
Mama may have, Papa may have
But God bless the child that's got his own
That's got his own

Money, you've got lots of friends
Crowding round the door
When you're gone and spending ends
They don't come no more
Rich relations give
Crust of bread and such
You can help yourself
But don't take too much
Mama may have, Papa may have
But God bless the child that's got his own
That's got his own

NOBODY KNOWS YOU (WHEN YOU'RE DOWN AND OUT)

(Singin' the Blues today.)

Once I lived the life of a millionaire,
Spent all my money, I just did not care.
Took all my friends out for a good time,
Bought bootleg liquor, champagne and wine.

Then I began to fall so low,
Lost all my good friends, I did not have nowhere to go.
I get my hands on a dollar again,
I'm gonna hang on to it till that eagle grins.

'Cause no, no, nobody knows you
When you're down and out.
In your pocket, not one penny,
And as for friends, you don't have any.

When you finally get back up on your feet again,
Everybody wants to be your old long-lost friend.
Said it's mighty strange, without a doubt,
Nobody knows you when you're down and out.

When you finally get back upon your feet again,
Everybody wants to be your good old long-lost friend.
Said it's mighty strange,
Nobody knows you,
Nobody knows you,
Nobody knows you when you're down and out.

TELL ME

A somber song for, what to me, will be a somber day. The whole thing is nearly eight minutes long, but it really speaks to me (for one) of everything we as a nation are collectively going through.

I bought two new albums (on CD) yesterday:

Rough and Rowdy Ways by Bob Dylan: This was released last last month, making bob Dylan an artist who has had albums chart in the '60s, '70s. '80s, 90s, 00s, 10s and 20s. the second disc contains but a single song, a somber track about the assassination of JFK which invokes a lot of '60s imagery.

Gaslighter by The Chicks (formerly "Dixie Chicks"): This one was released just yesterday.
