I really enjoyed the new Fantastic Four issue with the League of Reeds...it read like a really great Alan Moore Tom Strong story...which is funny given how much Tom Strong owes to Lee and Kirby's FF. ;)

Paul Tobin's run on Adventures of Spider-Man continues to be a funnier version of Ultimate Spider-Man which I like.

Superman was...uh...not very exciting.

Batman's team-up with The Great Ten in the Johnny DC Brave and Bold book was full of yetis and, thus, awesome.

I finished All-Star Superman, Vol. 2 at lunch. This volume wandered a little for me compared to the first, but things certainly came together at the end. Full of heart and wild ideas both. Started on the hardcover collection of Neil Gaiman's Batman: Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader? I knew I wouldn't have time to read the big two parter, so I just read the Introduction and the Batman Black and White story.

Another Chapter in the Madame Xanadu trade: the one set in London during Jack The Ripper's reign of terror. Only one more to go. And the first half of Alex de Campi & Igor Kordey's Smoke. Took an interesting turn with the "Right To Beauty Brigade"--I hadn't expected them to be so important to the story. Kind of reminds me of Transmetropolitan, done more realistically.

Flash: Rebirth #4 - I love the Barry Allen Flash, but this issue just didn't do anything for me.
Justice Society of America #30 - I'm actually thinking of letting this series go, which is something I would not have said three issues ago.
Wonder Woman #34-35 - I'm still enjoying what Gail Simone is doing with this series.

Green Lantern #45- This Blackest Night stuff is good.
Iron Man: Armor Wars #1 of 4- Not sure where this fits in continuity but so far it's a fun story.
Batman & Robin #3- Pretty good. Professor Pyg was bizzarre.
JSA #30- Parts of this I liked, parts I didn't. I think the overall story of someone picking apart the JSA is fine. But the schism between the team seems like it could be handled better. Plus I find Magog annoying.

SANDMAN #1

Having recently finished The Sandman hardcover by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, I was struck by how well those stories mesh with the backstory of Neil Gaiman's Dream being held captive by Roderick Burgess. There's a three-panel tie-in in issue #1 to Wesley Dodd's gas-masked identity, but when he switched to tights and added a sidekick I mistakenly believed the character became a Batman clone. The gas-masked version looks cooler, but the Simon and Kirby version is better. At the point S&K took over, Dodds traded in the gas-gun and sand motif for a dream motif; instead of putting people to sleep, he caused them to dream. This was someting of a fanciful notion in the Golden Age stories, and it wouldn't be for another 20 years or so that notion would be explained.

The odds are good that I will continue reading the rest of Gaiman's Sandman series.

Finished both of these. It appears that the 10 issues of Madame Xanadu are basically prelude to the "real" series. That's a bold choice, and I'm looking forward to seeing how it pans out in the 2nd collection. Smoke really turned into a grand conspiracy story, which ended with a satisfying bang. As I was reading it today I realized what else it reminded me of: Warren Ellis's Desolation Jones miniseries. Similar character design and setting, which is probably a coincidence, since they were published in the same year.
