Finished the House of Mystery trade this morning. It occurs to me that Sturges is revealing the background secrets very slowly. But there's enough happening in the foreground that I don't mind. Nice to see Abel and Goldie show up, and to discover that Abel is an important part of the series setup. Read some more American Flagg! also. I noticed that it was taking me a long time to get through an issue, and here's why: there are 28 pages of story, and they're densely packed with words and visuals.

X-Men Annual #9 (finishing off the Asgardian wars) and Wolverine #85-86 (including part of the Phalanx Covenant crossover)

This was a pretty amusing pairing. In the first story, Rachel Summers knows that Scott is her father but doesn't want to tell him. In the second story, Scott and Jean know that they raised Cable in the future but don't want to tell him. Very similar situations, written about 10 years apart.

The beginning of the end: first couple issues collected in 100 Bullets: Wilt. There are 12 issues in this TPB, and I intend to make it last for a few weeks. And the last issues in the first American Flagg! trade, which conclude the "Southern Comfort!" storyline (Chaykin liked exclamation points, didn't he?). The other storyline was "Hard Times"--I hadn't noticed that when I started reading it.

Amazing Spider-Man # 592-594: "Spidey 24/7" a fun romp showing Spidey's reaction to JJJ becoming mayor of NYC. Not perfect (I could have done without the now infamous last page of #592, showing Aunt May and JJJ Sr ... y'know; plus, there were some unresolved plotlines, such as the new Vulture still being at large, and Vin's sister moving in with Pete, that I think have been totally ignored in "American Son") but very enjoyable.

Amazing Spider-Man # 234-236: featuring the Will-o-the-Wisp and the last appearance of the original Tarantula. The Roger Stern era may be one of my favorite runs of all time. This is my Peter Parker; he uses his brains - he needs to dig up some dirt on the Brand Corporation, so he applies for an internship instead of just smashing his way in. During the course of the story, he stops the Wisp from killing a Brand guy who wouldn't think twice of killing Spidey. He even has compassion for Tarantula, who has been turned into a monster, and refuses to take pictures of his gruesome demise. All in all, one heckuva enjoyable tale.

More of the 100 Bullets finale. I confess to using Wikipedia to clarify some of the character relationships; I remembered all of the characters, but am vague about their alignments. Have to be careful with the Wiki, though, because it's full of spoilers.
Started on the second American Flagg! trade (the "State of the Union" arc).

Star Wars: Dark Empire #1. It actually came with a lot of books I bought. Couldn't even get through it. Seriously, with an entire galaxy to play with, why does everyone go back to using the Empire as the antagonist again and again and again...???

Star Wars 3-D, issues 1-3. From Blackthorne. Supposedly these are the rarest Star Wars comics out there, released in 1987-8 when almost nobody cared. They're all set just before Empire, and Len Wein wrote two of them. Pretty decent- they reminded me a lot of the Marvel series.

I still have yet to read the last two trades, and I almost think I'm going to just go back and start from the beginning and start over.

I thought about doing that, but I've been reading the series in real time almost since the beginning, so I thought I might as well have the same experience with the finale. Plus, I really want to see how it ends! I'm looking forward to rereading the whole series. I know there were probably a bunch of clues to later developments scattered around in the early issues, which could be picked up on rereading.
