Between now and November 29, Comic Book Resources is running a poll to see who people think is the "definitive" (their adjective) Batman artist.

The candidates are (alphabetically): Neal Adams, Jim Aparo, Norm Breyfogle, Greg Capullo, Bob Kane, Jim Lee, David Mazzuchelli, Frank Miller, Dick Sprang, and Bruce Timm.

While I voted for Aparo, I'm surprised Don Newton isn't on this list.

Thoughts?

  • If I were to vote, I'd likely choose Neal Adams.  I think he's done more to revitalize the look and feel of Batman than anyone.

  • And where is Jerry Robinson?

  • My choice is trailing in last place - Dick Sprang. He's doing better than Carmine Infantino though, who is not even listed.

  • My personal list would include Irv Novick with Dick Giordano inking, Jim Aparo, Don Newton, Dick Sprang, Sheldon Moldoff, Carmine Infantino and Marshall Rogers (another great Bat-artist not listed!).

  • I definitely think you could do much worse than Irv Novick, Sheldon Moldoff, Carmine Infantino and Marshall Rogers.

  • Norm Breyfogle is mine. Easily.

  • Those #$%^&*(((*&s!!!

No Jerry Robinson?  No Joe Giella??  No Marshall Rogers???  No Don Newton????  No Paul Gulacy?????

    SCREW their "poll"...!

  • Marshall Rogers is a good pick.  Of the ones listed, I went with Jim Aparo.

  • I agree that Don Newton and Marshall Rogers belong on this list. And Jerry Robinson! But still, Norm Breyfogle was not only my first Batman artist, but he was also the first artist whose work I could instantly recognize.

  • Much as I like Neal Adams, Jim Aparo, and Dick Sprang (THE definitive pre-Carmine Infantino Batman artist), I would also like to nominate Irv Novick.

Bob Kane and Frank Miller (whose art I despise) don't rate at all with me, and I think of Bruce Timm mainly as a top animated cartoonist, not a comic book artist, rightly or wrongly.
