Buffy vs. Farscape: Comparing Canceled Shows Continuing as Comics

Buffy-season-8-comic-book-issue-4-a In 2007, Joss Whedon brought his creation Buffy the Vampire Slayer to comic books. That’s not to say that Buffy hadn’t appeared in comic books before. She had been starring in comic books for nearly a decade. But this time her appearance would be very different. Instead…

DC Comics: The Other Shoe Drops from Disney/Marvel Buyout

As I predicted, DC's stepping up its game to compete with the new Disney-owned Marvel.

Here's a link to The Los Angeles Times story, one of the first to break it. But for those in a hurry, here are some of the highlights:

* DC Comics will change its name to DC Entertainment.

* Paul Levitz is stepping down as publisher (since 2002) and president (since… Continue

'Whiteout': A Classic GN Comes to the Silver Screen

By Andrew A. Smith

Scripps Howard News Service

Sept. 8, 2009 -- Mother Nature is the scariest killer of them all. That’s what I took away from Whiteout, the 1998 miniseries from Oni Press that was collected as a graphic novel in 2001, and is now a movie, premiering Sept. 11.

It’s not that Mama Nature kills any more savagely or brutally or frequently than human beings. We’re actually pretty good at that.…

I Like Ham 7: Hail to the King...of the Monsters!

Another one of my "favorite fictions" was Godzilla. I first saw Godzilla in Ghidrah the Three-Headed Monster, sometime in the late 1960's or early 1970's. I would've been somewhere between five and seven years old. This would have been one of my first intimations that there was a place called "Japan". (I had watched shows like Kimba, Speed Racer and Ultraman without realizing that they were Japanese in origin.) My knowledge of Japan in those days was limited to a dim… Continue

Strange Tales #1 review

DC let independent and small press creators loose on their characters a few years ago and the result was the overwhelmingly charming, often funny, Bizarro Comics. Marvel does the same thing and we get Curate's Egg Comics. Sorry, I mean Strange Tales. Good in parts, but not quite good enough.

I'm all for out of continuity strips that allow creators new to the characters to offer a new perspective, or just have fun, and when it works, Strange… Continue

My Crazy Blog 9/6/09

Ya'll should read my post about Dexter in "Don't touch that Dial."

Dexter is my current obsession. I go through phases like this. Earlier this summer it was True Blood. I had to catch up on all the episodes and read all the books. Now it's Dexter. I've now read all 3 of the books by Jeff Lindsay and caught up on all the episodes so far. But the new season starts… Continue

Column: What Disney/Marvel Will Probably Mean

By Andrew A. Smith

Scripps Howard News Service

Sept. 1, 2009 -- Yes, it’s true: Disney bought Marvel Comics for $4 billion.

Let’s get the jokes out of our system right away: The House of Mouse buys the House of Ideas, Spider-Mouse and Duckdevil, Fantasia Four (Billion).

But what does it mean? Obviously, Disney isn’t going to blab about its plans, but we do know some things and can guess some others. Here are the questions I hear the… Continue
