Blackest Night: Halfway Through DC's Horror Story

By Andrew A. Smith

Scripps Howard News Service

At DC Comics, the dead are rising. And so are sales. And so are some canceled titles – just for one issue, and just for fun.

This is all due to the blockbuster miniseries Blackest Night, now at its midway point. (It climaxes in March.) This story, which has many spin-offs and affects most DC books, features Black Lantern power rings (like Green Lantern’s, only eee-vil) resurrecting dead loved ones… Continue

Clearing The Cupboards 6 - Brave New World?

As many of you may (or indeed should) have realised by now I’m a bit of an old fogey. No, not THAT Old Fogey, but a bit of a one. One sign of that is the love I have for the really silly comics put out by the likes of ACG and Charlton in the 60’s. My first introduction to those were in the wonderful digest sized Alan Class Comics reprint titles you used to get… Continue

Jovian Reviews: The Trade Shelf, October 3, 2009

It was a cold day today, and I was really tired. I laid in bed this morning and read two trades instead of getting up and doing yard work and laundry, not to mention grading the 67,349,309 papers that need to be graded. I'm sure you'll all forgive me.

Here are the two trades I read today, and my humble critiques:

Batman Cacophony HC

DC Comics

Smith and Flanagan

I had read a review of this one online that said the first two issues weren't that great,… Continue

Doom Patrol #2

DC Comics

Giffen, Clark, Livesay, DeMatteis, Maguire

3.99

I have to say that I enjoyed this story even more than the previous issue, which I liked enough to return for #2. That's saying something. It's quirky, but not Morrisonian, and this is a good thing for this umpteenth remake since Grant's version. I liked the way the people with the black voids for faces somehow looked like they were drawn by Keith Giffen, if that makes any sense. I really… Continue

Deck Log Entry # 91 Persistence of Villain: the Silver-Age JLA's Most Stubborn Foes (Part 1)

At the height of its strength in the Silver Age, the Justice League of America boasted ten super-heroes as full-fledged members. The numbers alone, you’d think, would be enough for any villain with a strong sense of self-preservation to take his gang and set up shop elsewhere, like say, Earth-Three. Yet there never seemed to be a shortage of bad guys and space tyrants willing to tackle the World’s Greatest Heroes on their way to ruling the world. And,… Continue
