In previous years, this was a memory box so we didn't miss any good nominations for the Cappies. With the Cappies hypertimed away, that doesn't mean we have to discontinue these threads. I've always liked going back at the end of the year and seeing the books and stories and moments that people really champion -- including plenty of stuff that I've forgotten about come Christmastime.
So have at it, Legionnaires! It's a bold new year! What in 2017 has knocked you out?

Calgon, take me away
Volume two of the deluxe edition shipped this week.
That is a good subject to bring up.
ATLAS CREATOR COLLECTION No. 3: BILL EVERETT:
I am currently just finishing up the Joe Maneely volume, and plan to move on directly into this one.
ANIMAL MAN by TOM VEITCH & STEVE DILLON OMNIBUS:
Reprints issue #27-50 (plus some other stuff).
MARVEL CREATOR COLLECTION No. 1 - BARRY WINDSOR SMITH AT MARVEL Vol. 1:
Collects material from The Uncanny X-Men #53-55, Captain Marvel #11, Marvel Super Heroes #19, Nick Fury Agent of SHIELD #10-12, The Avengers #66-67 & 98-100, Tower of Shadows #5 & 7, Chamber of Darkness #4, Astonishing Tales #3-6 & 10, Monsters on the Prowl #9, Iron Man #47, 232, & 243, Doctor Strange #179, and Marvel Premiere #3-4. The only thing I can think of that's missing is Medusa pin-up from Marvel Collectors' Item Classics #21. Future volumes will trace Windsor-Smiths career through such milestones as Machine Man and Weapon X. Good thing this wasn't on the same ship as Atlas Comics Library No. 9, stuck in the Strait of Hormuz.
This one shot immediately to the top of my "to read" pile, even though I am not quite finished with the Bill Everett collection. (Fantagraphics is quickly becoming my favorite comic book publisher.) It's an interesting mix of stories, and with BWS in particular, it's interesting to observe as his style improves very much, very quickly. Jon B. Cooke has written an introduction composed almost entirely of decades worth of interviews.
Welcome to June 2026!
May was something of a lackluster month as far as comic books were concerned (i.e., actual books of comics), but if everything solicited to ship in June actually ships, June will be a definite improvement over May. No fewer than six collections have been solicited to ship over June's four Wednesdays (including my "Pick of the Year" It has been 15 months since I learned of it (and 20 since it was first announced), and there is nothing I have been looking forward to more in recent memory. But I digress. July 2026 is slated to continue June's trend with seven (or eight) releases I'm looking forward to in its five Wednesdays.
Mandrake the Magician Dailies v4 shipped last week, but shipping to the distributor is a different matter entirely from shipping to comic shops, and my LCS did not receive my copy. Although I do expect it thic comig Wednesday (June 3), I am not including it in my June tally. For one thing, it was solicited to ship in July of 2025. Volume five was solicited for July 2026, so maybe we'll see it next year. Dealing with Hermes Press is frustrating under the best of circumstances, but with the closure of the Straight of Hormuz, who knows when we'll see it? I don't usually post to this thread until and unless the book in question is in my posession, but we'll be hosting guests from out-of-state this week and I may not be able to make it to my LCS possibly until Friday at the earliest. In the meantime, here is my...
JUNE CHECKLIST:
(I'll fill it in as the books arrive.)
Of the six items I am interested in which have been solicited to ship in June, so far the tally is "Oh for one."
JUNE TALLY:
The one item I expected to ship this week is now expected to arrive July 22.
(And my Mandrake Dailies v4 didn't ship this week, either.)
For some reason I read "Mandrake Dailies" as "Marmaduke Dailies," and that just tickled me. Nothing wrong with the 'duke, of course, but it's been so long since I'd thought about that strip...!
