A Cover a Day

Ok, how about this for an idea.  We take it in turns to post a favourite (British spelling) comic cover every day.  This went really well on the comic fan website that I used to frequent.  What we tried to do was find a theme or subject and follow that, until we all got bored with that theme.  I'd like to propose a theme of letters of the alphabet. So, for the remainder of October (only 5 days) and all of November, we post comic cover pictures associated with the letter "A".  Then in December, we post covers pertaining to the letter "B".  The association to the letter can be as tenuous as you want it to be. For example I could post a cover from "Adventure Comics" or "Amazing Spider Man".  However Spider Man covers can also be posted when we're on the letter "S".  Adventure Comic covers could also be posted when we're on the letter "L" if they depict the Legion of Super Heroes.  So, no real hard, fast rules - in fact the cleverer the interpretation of the letter, the better, as far as I'm concerned.

And it's not written in stone that we have to post a cover every day. There may be some days when no cover gets posted. There's nothing wrong with this, it just demonstrates that we all have lives to lead.

If everyone's in agreement I'd like to kick this off with one of my favourite Action Comic covers, from January 1967. Curt Swan really excelled himself here.

Discussion and voting on future monthly themes takes place on the "Nominations, Themes and Statistics for A Cover A Day" thread.  Click here to view the thread.

  • Another iteration of a team called the Elementals.

  • Marvel Two-In-One #20--the last part of Roy Thomas' World War II crossover involving the Fantastic Four and, more importantly, the Thing!

He also tried really hard to make the LIBERTY LEGION happen but it wasn't in the cards. Too bad because I did like them.

They were an attempt to recreate the Justice Society of Thomas' youth:

The Whizzer for the Flash, Miss America for Wonder Woman, Red Raven for Hawkman, Blue Diamond for the Atom and the Patriot for Doctor Mid-Nite (secondary Captain America for secondary Batman).

But Jack Frost and the Thin Man don't align with Green Lantern and Johnny Thunder/Black Canary.

But the Liberty Legion matched up well with his first lineup of All Star Squadron:

The Whizzer/Johnny Quick, Miss America/Liberty Belle, Red Raven/Hawkman, Robotman/Blue Diamond, Patriot/Shining Knight and the Thin Man/Plastic Man. The Atom could be a Bucky substitute and in All Star Squadron #5, he introduced the new Firebrand as a "polar" opposite for Jack Frost!

  • The Spirit #58. I'm not aware that The Whittler ever made a second appearance.

  • Since Blackhawk has been mentioned a couple of times lately... King Condor had a couple of run ins with the group, but never won any. (Image courtesy of the Grand Comics Database.)

  • Justice League #20. Also, a one-shot bad guy. The spaceman is just a robot, but the alien controlling him is the villain.

  • Obnoxio the Clown replaced Irving Nebbish as the mascot for Crazy in 1980, but he also crossed over into mainstream Marvel a few times. Apart from being something of a minor villain, his first appearance in the 616 featured the really minor mutant villain Eye Scream, who does not, however appear on the cover.

  • The H-Dial hero(in)es vs minor villain Toymaster.  I wonder what would have happened if Robby had dialled H-E-R-O-I-N-E?

Voting for themes to follow September is now open here.

  • Another duo from Exor - the Super Fiends! Superiorman* and Wondrous Woman, who transformed to Wingman and Winggirl, and then to Capeman and Capegirl.

*This is the second Superiorman to appear in Super Friends. The first was the Frankenstein looking hero in the Monster League in Super Friends #10.

  • I know who the Fisherman is. He appeared several times. But I have no idea who the "Un-Thing" and the "Fire-Haired Karla" are but they both seem interesting!

    • "The Terrible Trio" seems to be a popular name for a group of bad guys.  See my post here on the "Three of a Kind" thread.
