A Cover a Day

Ok, how about this for an idea.  We take it in turns to post a favourite (British spelling) comic cover every day.  This went really well on the comic fan website that I used to frequent.  What we tried to do was find a theme or subject and follow that, until we all got bored with that theme.  I'd like to propose a theme of letters of the alphabet. So, for the remainder of October (only 5 days) and all of November, we post comic cover pictures associated with the letter "A".  Then in December, we post covers pertaining to the letter "B".  The association to the letter can be as tenuous as you want it to be. For example I could post a cover from "Adventure Comics" or "Amazing Spider Man".  However Spider Man covers can also be posted when we're on the letter "S".  Adventure Comic covers could also be posted when we're on the letter "L" if they depict the Legion of Super Heroes.  So, no real hard, fast rules - in fact the cleverer the interpretation of the letter, the better, as far as I'm concerned.

And it's not written in stone that we have to post a cover every day. There may be some days when no cover gets posted. There's nothing wrong with this, it just demonstrates that we all have lives to lead.

If everyone's in agreement I'd like to kick this off with one of my favourite Action Comic covers, from January 1967. Curt Swan really excelled himself here.

Welcome Back Kotter was a short lived DC TV Comic based upon the Gabe Kaplan series about a man who returns to the high school he graduated from as a teacher to help those in need. The two distinctions the comic had over the show were no budget worries so they could pull off more outlandish story lines and Vinnie Barbarino stayed through the whole series while actor John Travolta left the show before the final season.

While not every cover of the ten issue run depicted the high school itself, here's the very first, courtesy of the Grand Comics Database.

That is certainly true in my case. I can honestly and proudly say that I never bought an Archie comic as a a kid (not that there's anything wrong with that). I was certainly aware of Archie, from Saturday morning cartoons to Sunday funnies to trips to the dentist's office to visits with my female cousins; I just never considered them to be "real" comics. Superboy, OTOH, is certainly "real," but I'm not as familiar with his series (little of the non-LSH material has been archived). Some of the choices above, however, put me in mind of a series I did read (earlier this year, as a matter of record),  what I could of it (i.e., what has been reprinted by Fantagraphics): Our Gang by Walt Kelly.

Apparently Archie Andrews' "problems" started long before high school, but how can you have the same principal and primary teacher in elementary school?

The earliest Little Archie school based cover I could find (because the title apparently spun out of their Giant Series), courtesy of the Grand Comics Database.

These kids are on their way to school, that's "close enough for government work", as the saying goes.  The story is set in Japan's rural far north, and the school and its student body are so small that all of the grades study  in the same room and have the same teacher  The girl on the right is from Tokyo.  (Think sort of like a kid from New York City moving to rural Alaska.)

I always assumed that the "Little Archie" took place in an aternate timeline to the regular ones.
