A Cover a Day

Ok, how about this for an idea.  We take it in turns to post a favourite (British spelling) comic cover every day.  This went really well on the comic fan website that I used to frequent.  What we tried to do was find a theme or subject and follow that, until we all got bored with that theme.  I'd like to propose a theme of letters of the alphabet. So, for the remainder of October (only 5 days) and all of November, we post comic cover pictures associated with the letter "A".  Then in December, we post covers pertaining to the letter "B".  The association to the letter can be as tenuous as you want it to be. For example I could post a cover from "Adventure Comics" or "Amazing Spider Man".  However Spider Man covers can also be posted when we're on the letter "S".  Adventure Comic covers could also be posted when we're on the letter "L" if they depict the Legion of Super Heroes.  So, no real hard, fast rules - in fact the cleverer the interpretation of the letter, the better, as far as I'm concerned.

And it's not written in stone that we have to post a cover every day. There may be some days when no cover gets posted. There's nothing wrong with this, it just demonstrates that we all have lives to lead.

If everyone's in agreement I'd like to kick this off with one of my favourite Action Comic covers, from January 1967. Curt Swan really excelled himself here.

[The Baron]

Another common element in many high school-based  manga/anime is the sports day episode, in which the protagonsits take pat in various athletic events.  There is frequently an element of competition between classes and a climactic event  (often a relay race) in which one pf the main characters wins (or sometimes loses) the day.

This series centers on the exploits of a school nusre in a world in which everyone differs from the "human norm" in some way.

It's interesting to see how little classrooms will change over the next millennium.  The kids even appear to be taking notes with (paper) notebook and pencil!

How would you all feel about ranked choice voting? Everyone gets three choices: the first counts for 3, the second 2 and the third 1. (One wouldn't have to vote for more than one, but no fair voting for the same topic multiple times.) 

We've had votes from Steve, Richard, Jeff, Lee and myself.  Would any other current participants (such as Philip Portelli, Dave Palmer, JD DeLuzio, and The Baron) like to register their own vote before we tally up?

I like the challenge of whatever we pick.

But here goes

1.  Robots (of course, we'll have to decide if Robotman is a robot or not; will Vision count?)

2.  Limited series (planned and unplanned [short runs])

3.  Trials and courtrooms (we could probably have a week of Julie Schwartz covers where gorillas are on trial)

I know I suggested some of these so here we go! 

1) ROBOTS--probably the theme with the most options. If we want to make it more challenging, I'd say "No Androids"! (Sorry, Vision, Data, Brainiac, etc!)

2) TRIALS & COURTROOMS---we could probably include all legal actions which would include executions, actual arrests and paroles.

3) CARTOONS & ANIMATED SERIES---but they have to be either direct tie-ins or comics that were adapted into animated episodes!

I would go withnthese, too, although I reserve the right to classify Astro Boy as a "Robot" and not an "android".

So, it's the 10th and I've run out of non-Archie covers. So it's over to Archie now, and I have around 50 of these. So this should see me through to the 30th.  As someone pointed out earlier I never regarded Archie as a comic, mainly because Archie comics were not imported into the UK in the 60s/70s like Marvel/DC superhero comics.  So I never saw an Archie comic till I started buying retro comics in specialist comic shops in the late 90s. 

The only time I'd ever heard of "Archie" was the transatlantic number 1 hit in 1969, by The Archies, called "Sugar Sugar". The video was based on the comic character but since I wasn't aware of him it meant little to me. Incidentally "The Archies" were just a bunch of session players who were each paid a small fee to play on the record. They never promoted the single by touring - hence the video. The single was the best selling single of 1969 in both the US and the UK, so, I wonder, who got all the royalties?

This series is about a group of girls attending a high school for the arts.  What's interesting is that over the course of the series, the third-year girls graduate, and new first-year girls arrive.
