THE BLACK GHOST SEASON 2: SHAME THE DEVIL TPB

Story: Alex Segura & Monica Gallagher | Art: George Kambadais | Colors: Ellie Wright | Letters: Taylor Esposito | Editor: Greg Lockard | $22.99

The Black Ghost is back! The gritty crime comic book series about a masked activist fighting for the soul of her city continues monthly with Season Two.

Lara Dominguez is a reporter who moves from her hometown of Miami to the city of Creighton. There, Lara will have to navigate the corruption of her adopted city, the uncertainties of virtue and her own personal demons.

On the heels of his acclaimed novel Secret Identity, Alex Segura returns to The Black Ghost. “When Hard Revolution, the first arc in our series was received so warmly - and got the attention of places like The Hollywood Reporter, The New York Times, Publishers Weekly, and a print edition from Dark Horse Comics — we started to think of more,” says writer Alex Segura. “I could almost feel Monica and I looking at each other from across the country and thinking 'Well, what do we do now?' "

“At the end of Season One Lara proved to have the capacity to be courageous even in her darkest moments,” says co-writer Monica Gallagher. “But in Season Two, she can no longer outrun the years of issues that have been plaguing her. With this season we wanted to explore what Lara would be like when she accepted responsibility for her past mistakes and did perhaps the hardest thing of all — worked on herself. Along with Lara, the other characters likewise have a chance to grow and evolve.”

Segura continues, “Monica and I have always said that The Black Ghost isn’t just another masked crimefighter looking to do good. We play with the elements that make up characters like Batman, The Question, Daredevil, and so on, but run them through a filter of raw humanity, in a setting that feels more like a city we’ve all walked through than the gothic streets of some fictional ones we know. That’s the initial story we were all interested in telling — what would really happen if a flawed, messed-up person was given the chance to do good — and redeem themselves in the process?”

SPY SUPERB #1 (OF 3)

Story/Art: Matt Kindt | $7.99

Who is the perfect spy? That question may be best answered by bestselling cartoonist Matt Kindt, who has been writing and illustrating espionage and action-fueled comics like BRZRKR (with Keanu Reeves), Apache Delivery Service, BANG! Dept. H, Ether, Fear Case, MIND MGMT, Folklords, Revolver, 3 Story, Super Spy and Pistolwhip for the last two decades. Next January, Kindt and the acclaimed colorist Sharlene Kindt (Dept H) will release SPY SUPERB their latest collaboration, an offbeat mystery-thriller about a secret organization that has developed the perfect spy. And just who is that perfect spy? Someone who doesn’t even realize they are a spy.

In SPY SUPERB, a secret organization identifies the ultimate asset: a man named Jay, who is what they call a “useful idiot.”  Jay is sent on missions without even realizing he’s on a mission. Until he picks up the wrong phone with the wrong secret intel and now Russian hit-squads and elite assassins are after him. But Jay believes he was a sleeper agent — and really is the "spy superb". His complete obliviousness and lack of survival skills may be the only thing that saves him in this globe-trotting espionage tale … where nothing is what it seems … but also … kind of actually is what it seems.

“In Spy Superb I wanted to explore a character, the idea of a very average person who is under the belief that he is utterly exceptional,” said Kindt. “There is a scientific term for this —The Dunning-Kruger effect — a person who insists they possess knowledge and skills that they obviously do not. What if a super spy was suffering from this? Well … they would of course be a … SPY SUPERB. It was actually really hard for me to keep this character alive past issue #1. … There are hit men after him … a super assassin who kills only with rock, paper and scissors … and a real super spy working in the shadows of our “hero” who may actually be the real spy superb. It feels really great to be drawing a new book — and I’m beyond happy that Sharlene Kindt (Dept. H) is painting it. It’s definitely the most ambitious collaboration we’ve ever had.”

The announcement of SPY SUPERB follows the news that three of Kindt’s acclaimed comics are currently in active development under the Dark Horse Entertainment banner:

Based on the comic series by Matt Kindt and Wilfredo Torres, the feature film adaptation of the stylish spy thriller Bang! is set to star Idris Elba (The Harder They Fall, Concrete Cowboy, Luther) and be directed by David Leitch (Bullet Train, Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2). The script will be written by Kindt and Zak Olkewicz (Bullet Train, Fear Street Part 2: 1978). The film will be produced by Mike Richardson and Keith Goldberg for Dark Horse, David Leitch and Kelly McCormick for 87 North, and Idris Elba. In Bang!, when a terrorist cult sets out to start the apocalypse with a series of novels meant to brainwash their readers, the world’s most celebrated spy is sent to track down and kill the author responsible.

Based on Kindt’s acclaimed Mind MGMT series, Curtis Gwinn (Stranger Things) is set to Executive Produce this series adaptation. The film will be produced by Mike Richardson and Keith Goldberg for Dark Horse, along with Gwinn. In Mind MGMT, a young woman stumbles onto the top-secret Mind Management program. Her ensuing journey involves weaponized psychics, hypnotic advertising, talking dolphins and seemingly immortal pursuers, as she attempts to find the man who was MIND MGMT's greatest success — and its most devastating failure. But in a world where people can rewrite reality itself, can she trust anything she sees?

Director Alice Waddington (Paradise Hills) is set to direct Netflix’s adaptation of Dept. H, which is based on the popular comic book series by Matt and Sharlene Kindt. Writer T.S. Nowlin (The Maze Runner) will adapt the script. Mike Richardson, Keith Goldberg and Paul Schwake of Dark Horse Entertainment will produce.

“If you close your eyes and imagine John Wick being dropped into a Wes Anderson film, you’ll have a sense of the world of SPY SUPERB, “said Dark Horse Publisher Mike Richardson. “It’s unconventional, unusual and the kind of smart action comic book you expect from Matt Kindt.”

SPY SUPERB is the second release from Flux House, a new boutique imprint that will feature the writing (and sometimes) art of Matt Kindt, with crime, science fiction, and humor stories all told and presented in startling and untraditional ways, following the release of MIND MGMT: BOOTLEG. SPY SUPERB issue 1 will feature a main cover by Matt Kindt and incentive variant covers by Martin Simmonds, Tula Lotay and Christian Ward. For more information about Flux House, follow Dark Horse Comics on social media  and follow Flux House on Twitter.

Praise for Matt Kindt:

“I mean, it’s right there in the title. Spy. Superb. This is a truly superb espionage page that kicks off what’s sure to be a funny, nasty meditation on the spy genre. Can’t wait to see where this one goes!!!” — Patton Oswalt

"Kindt breaks all preconceived notions of what comic books are.” — IGN

“Kindt is a storyteller so fully in control of his gifts that his graphic novels read like quietly compelling arguments for the comics medium’s narrative potential.” — NPR

SCOTCH McTIERNAN'S HOLIDAY PARTY #1 (ONE-SHOT)

First came the 4/20 special The Secret History of the War on Weed, then came Scotch McTiernan’s Halloween Party, and now the former Deadpool chums — Gerry Duggan, Brian Posehn and Scott Koblish — form Voltron again to bring you Scotch’s holiday bash in, Scotch McTiernan’s Holiday Party. This one-shot story is set to hit shelves in January from Image Comics.

The most powerful Scrooges in the human race are visited by the Ghost of Christmas Future when they try to colonize Mars. All the fun, insanity, and thought-provoking violence of The Secret History Of The War On Weed and Halloween Party are perfected in this third holiday-themed installment. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll buy one to read and one to slab for your descendants.

" 'Sad and funny' has always been our 'sweet and sour' and we're pouring it on this third installment of our holiday-themed ruminations of the downfall of civilization lensed through '80s action heroics," said Duggan. "Thanks for spending your holidays with us this year. Thanks for pre-ordering."

Koblish added: "This is our third outing with Scotch McTiernan, and drawing him through all of his incarnations has been a blast!  Give the gift of this wild and unusual comic to someone you love during the holiday season. Gerry, Brian, and I will make sure the party is well-stocked with Scotch!"

“Man, do I love working with my pals Duggan and Koblish," said Posehn. "We laugh like dumbasses as we throw our favorite tropes and jokes in a blender, add a little bit of plot, story, character and whatnot. Then Scott runs off and draws the crap out of it. And this book is no different, our third adventure with my new favorite character, Scotch McTiernan. What kind of Holiday antics await you? Well, shove a candy cane in your pie hole, pour hot cocoa on your privates and enjoy!”

JOE FIXIT #1

Story: Peter David | Art: Yildiary Cinar | Cover: Cully Hamner & Jordie Bellaire | Teen+ | $3.99

Known for his legendary and impactful run on INCREDIBLE HULK, superstar comics writer Peter David is proving his acclaimed work on the Hulk mythos is far from over! Having just finished an epic trilogy of limited series that told the grand saga of Hulk villain MAESTRO, David will now turn his attention to another iconic creation of his — JOE FIXIT! The fan-favorite Hulk persona that muscled his way through Las Vegas as a hedonistic bodyguard will star in his very own limited series set during David’s original time on the INCREDLBLE HULK. Joining David in this Sin City adventure will be artist Yildiray Cinar (The Marvels).

“When I created Joe Fixit decades ago, it was merely as a means to shake up the standard formula,” David explained. “Typically Bruce would have set up some sort of situation and he would be worried that the Hulk would inevitably show up and screw things up. The storyline with Joe flipped the formula on its head, and set up the Hulk with his great situation in Vegas and he was worried that Bruce would show up to screw things up. I had no idea that the character would have this much staying power, and that so much would eventually be done with him in the pages of the IMMORTAL HULK. I’m thrilled that Marvel has given me this opportunity to revisit with an old friend.”

SCARLET WITCH #1

Story: Steve Orlando | Art: Sara Pichelli | Colors: Matthew Wilson | Cover: Russell Dauterman | Teen+ | $4.99

The Scarlet Witch will return in January in a brand-new ongoing solo series! A groundbreaking new chapter for one of Marvel Comics’ most beloved characters, SCARLET WITCH will be written by Steve Orlando, known for his thrilling current run of Marauders and last year’s Darkhold saga, and drawn by artist Sara Pichelli, the superstar talent known for her acclaimed work on titles such as Ultimate Spider-Man. Together these two comic powerhouses will open the door to a new era of adventures, mysteries, and quests that only a hero with Wanda Maximoff’s breathtaking and unmatched mystical abilities are fit for!

Following her redemption in the pages of X-Men: Trial of Magneto, Wanda is reborn as the hero the Marvel Universe needs her to be! Making the most of her fresh start, Wanda uses her powers in a glorious new way and embraces a new calling to help those who need it the most. Experience one the most powerful magic-wielders on the planet at her very best in the series Scarlet Witch fans have been asking for!

There is a door that appears only to those who need it most, who have no one else in the world to turn to. On the other side of this door is a mysterious witchcraft shop. Friend or foe, human or otherwise--if your need is great and your hope is gone, there you will meet the SCARLET WITCH! Wanda Maximoff is familiar with hitting rock bottom — and now that she’s finally found peace, she’s pledged all her power to help others who are languishing at their lowest. But when a woman falls through Wanda’s door with a terrifying story of a town gone mad, the Scarlet Witch will have to muster her wits and chaos magic to deal with an insidious threat!

“Since I first stepped into the House of Ideas, the Scarlet Witch has been with me—in fact, she was the star of my first Marvel work ever, kicking ass, weaving spells, and humbling Doom in Darkhold! So, there was no way I could pass up the chance to work on SCARLET WITCH,” Orlando said. “Wanda Maximoff has finally broken free of the shadows she's wrestled with for years. And now? Sara Pichelli, Russell Dauterman, and I are unveiling the next chapter of her powerful, improbable, magical life. When you have nowhere else to turn ... you turn to the Scarlet Witch. And God help anyone who gets in her way.”

"You have been waiting Scarlet Witch solo return for so long!” Pichelli added. “Finally that time has come and I'm truly honored my art was chosen to make this happen. Can't wait for you to see the book."

The mesmerizing trailer lays out Wanda’s new mission and spotlights some of her upcoming feats including a breathtaking showdown with the Corrupter! Fans can also behold Wanda’s new costume designed by superstar artist Russell Dauterman and spot a new supporting character who will play a key role throughout the series — none other than DARCY LEWIS! The beloved Marvel Cinematic Universe character will make her comic book debut in the series, taking up duties as Wanda’s trusty right hand after falling through the enchanted door herself. Darcy’s mysterious past and the effect it has on Wanda’s new calling will be revealed in due time!

“Two of the major crosses that she’d been bearing for a long time had finally been lifted, so it really felt like a new moment,” Orlando told Polygon in a recent interview. “We talked about setting her up in a new place where she could put her power to service for all the people that she’s realized she could have helped if she had actually taken the time and done the work to reckon with herself sooner.”

X-MEN LEGENDS #5

The year was 1991, and the X-Men were at the forefront of their incredible '90s heyday. Enter Lucas Bishop! Created by Whilce Portacio and John Byrne along with Portacio's longtime friend, artist Karl Altstaetter, Bishop burst onto the scene from the far future and infused the mutant mythos with his explosive no-nonsense attitude and the riveting mystery that drove him. The energy-absorbing mutant soldier has been a central figure in X-Men storytelling ever since, and this January, fans will travel back in time to his groundbreaking comics debut in X-MEN LEGENDS #5-6. The saga will be written and drawn by Portacio himself along with prolific comics writer Brian Haberlin.

The story will finally reveal the genesis of Bishop’s fateful time travel mission that pulled him from the future and into the X-Men’s present! Presaging Bishop’s first appearance in the classic Uncanny X-Men #282, the arc will shed new light on Bishop’s original motivations and the intense guilt he feels over his fallen teammates as well as provide surprising depth to the dystopian world he left behind. This incredible and moving two-parter is only the latest X-Men epic in X-MEN LEGENDS, the series that sees X-Men’s greatest creators return with all-new, in-continuity tales set during their original iconic runs!

Bishop, Malcolm, and Randall, the elite Omega Squad, have discovered a dark truth about the X.S.E. After a mission goes sideways, how far will they be willing to go to make this right? To the past — and beyond! Bishop will make the most shocking decision in X-MEN LEGENDS history that will redefine what you thought you knew about mutantkind’s future and the reason behind Bishop’s collision with the X-Men!

“At heart, I love the genre of science fiction. Specifically, the world building aspect of science. So, when Karl and I created Lucas Bishop, we built in our heads, a world for Omega Squad to exist in,” Portacio explained. “In the original incarnation, we didn't have much time to show any of that. Here in these two issues, Brian and I are able to give the audience a beginning glimpse of some of the detail of the world that Bishop left behind.”

“We give flavor to the micro ecosystem that is The Pool, its inmates, their families, the X.S.E., and most importantly, Bishop and his character and personality,” Portacio continued. “I've always seen Bishop as much, much more than X-Men muscle. He has always been, to me, a man perfectly born to conquer a harsh world. Yet he hides within himself a heart more suited for a kinder existence...which gives him purpose in that harsh world.”

“Whilce and I have been longtime collaborators, and both worked for Marvel individually, but never together! It's an honor he thought of me to work with him on defining more of Bishop's history; a legendary comic artist and a legendary X-Men? How could I say no??” Haberlin added.

Witness legendary Whilce Portacio’s never-before-told vision for Bishop when X-MEN LEGENDS #5 hits stands in January! For more information, visit Marvel.com.

After a seaquake, a huge lizard-like creature walked out of the ocean and almost destroyed a fishing village in Ireland. Fortunately for the village, the same quake that brought the 65 foot monster to land has also grounded a salvage ship, the crew of which proved up to the task of capturing the beast. The monster, dubbed Gorgo, was really just a youngster and its 200 foot tall mother was coming for him. After a pitched battle with the British army, Gorga's mother, Ogra, was able to free her child and they both went lumbering back to the sea! Steve Ditko's artwork just engulfs you in this Silver Age giant monster tale! Collects Gorgo #1-5 (June 1961-January 1962).

  • I've got all the Gorgo stories drawn by Steve Ditko in a separate volume by a different publisher, but my Collector Gene will force me to get this, which has the whole series.

And, of course, Steve Ditko, whose moody, individualistic touch came to dominate Charlton's supernatural titles and, of course, led to deserved fame over at Marvel and with a kid called Parker who could swing from skyscraper tops on a gossamer web that he fired from his wrists. CHILDREN OF THE BLACK SUN #1

Story: Dario Sicchio | Art/Cover: Letizia Cadonici | Ablaze | $3.99

From the artist of the hit series The House of Slaughter!

"It is not difficult to be happy under a blue sky. But it takes a lot of courage to be strong even under a black sun."

Over the years, a black sun has risen twice. A dark dawn whose rays have done terrible things to people's minds, driving them to all sorts of horror. Twelve years have passed since the last time and the world still fears the return of that inexplicable phenomenon. But fear is not the only legacy of those terrible days. All the women who got pregnant under the influence of the black sun have given birth to babies with some ... peculiarities. White hair, ashy skin, abnormal proportions and eyes as red as fire: the Children of the Black Sun.

Brightvale is a small town like many others. Here the Children of the Black Sun are treated with particular contempt, especially in the days leading up to the anniversary of the two disasters. The hatred of their fellow villagers, terrified of a possible return of that horror, will push these kids to unite and embark on a hallucinatory journey to discover themselves and their true nature. But is the black sun really about to return?

Story: Frank Martin.  | Art/Cover: Dan Scalisi  | Variants: Rully Akbar & Periya Pillai  | Logo: Dave Lentz | Scout Comics | $3.99

Jack, a young mechanic, lives in a beat-up old space ship called The Beanstalk. The captain is a human woman called “Mom,” and two aliens round out the crew: Zeke, who runs security, and Stilts, who handles their business relations. After a robot malfunctions on the ship, Mom orders Jack to sell it at a space station bazaar. Instead of selling it though, Jack gets sidetracked by a smooth talking alien who persuades Jack to give him the robot in exchange for a strange navigation unit. When he gets back, Mom is angry that Jack didn’t sell the robot and tosses the NAV unit aside, which mysteriously activates itself. As they’re sleeping, the ship somehow finds itself in deep space in front of a massive alien ship. Eager to prove that the NAV unit wasn’t a waste, Jack boards the ship and discovers a giant sleeping alien as well as a bunch of large golden eggs. Excited that they could sell one, Jack picks up an egg, which triggers an alarm, waking the alien. Jack races back to his ship, making it to safety just in time. Later, the crew celebrates their score while, unbeknownst to them, the egg begins to crack.

Quote from the creator, Frank Martin

"Scout Comics has quickly risen as a force in the indie comic world. Scout is publishing quality books in so many genres, and as a mash-up of both sci-fi homages and classic fairy tales, I couldn't be happier that Grimm Space has found a home there." — Frank Martin

  • "It's another PS Artbooks Dump Week!"

I count seven new HCs, not including the D.B's Frankenstein slipcase.* It's funny... I used that exact same phrase to warn my wife that this was going to be a big week. Because PS Artbooks are printed in China, I also felt justified in using the term "slow boat from China" (which is literally true in more ways than one). She warned me not to use that phrase and when I asked her which one she meant she replied, "Both of them."

*(Oh, wait... some of these have already been published? Thanks for the heads up. My shop shouldn't pull them for me if I've already bought them, but I'll make it a point to double check before Wednesday.)

"These are the only two volumes with no HC version, but the slipcase kinda-sorta makes up for it."

The only two in this series. Most of the new series don't have a HC edition at all. That's fine; gives me a chance to cut back a bit. I think the Planet Comics "softees" have outpaced the HCs at this point, too. I'm going to have to look into that at some point and make a decision.

"I've got all the Gorgo stories drawn by Steve Ditko in a separate volume by a different publisher, but my Collector Gene will force me to get this, which has the whole series."

That same publisher (or perhaps a different one) also offers a collection of the non-Ditko Gorgo, which I also have. Under the circumstances, my "Collector Gene" has allowed me to give this one a pass.

"ALLEY OOP AND MOOTOO" - This one was supposed to have shipped in November, but now both series are up-to-date with their solicits.

  • PS ARTBOOKS: Cross-referencing your list with my LCS's site, these are the ones I determine to be new (all HC):

FIGHT COMICS: FEATURING SENORITA RIO VOLUME 3 HC

PRE-CODE CLASSICS: SUPERIOR STRANGE MYSTERIES VOLUME 1 HC

PS ARTBOOKS: CLASSIC HORROR COMICS VOLUME 2 HC

SILVER AGE CLASSIC: UNUSUAL TALES VOLUME 5 HC

SILVER AGE CLASSICS: MYSTERIES OF UNEXPLORED WORLDS VOLUME 5 HC

SILVER AGE CLASSICS: SPACE WAR VOLUME 3 HC

SILVER AGE CLASSICS: STRANGE SUSPENSE STORIES VOLUME 5 HC

Regarding Superior Strange Mysteries v1, I already have "Strange Mysteries" volumes 1 and 2, but I think these are two  (possibly three) different series. My two volumes are "Silver Age classics" and the new one is a "Pre-Code classic."

"Jeff of Earth-J and I have been waiting for this for a looooong time!"

Regarding that, v3 came out in 2013 and v8 in 2015, so exactly how long depends on when each of us started waiting, respectively. For me it's been the full ten years.

  • I have Dick Briefer's Frankenstein Vols. 3-8. I've been waiting for Vols. 1-2 since I bought my first one. We're probably on the same page.

  • Due to the vagaries of comic book distribution, my D.B. Frankenstein slipcase will not arrive in my LCS until tomorrow.

    Yz4R2Nv.gif

All seven other volumes arrived, though.

What I meant yesterday is that, in 2013, PS Artbooks announced that v1-2 wouldn't ship until after v3-8, so I guess I've been waiting for nearly ten years, but I've been expecting it for "only" eight. (The slipcase was originally solicited for June 2022 release.)

  • You are not going to believe this.

My LCS calls me this morning to tell me the slipcase is in, so I drive all the way into Dallas, a 58 mile round trip, for the second time in two days, and get there only to discover that the slipcase is damaged... not bad, but bad enough. I'm particular, but I think even someone less particular than I would balk at buying this slipcase in the shape it's in. So I asked them to get a replacement copy and maybe I'll have it by next Wednesday. I've waited eight (or ten, depending on hoow you look at it) years for these book, so what's another week?

  • I usually get my PS Artbooks from Westfield -- but they don't offer the Frankenstein slipcase so far. My backup is InStockTrades -- and they aren't offering it, and don't have it in "upcoming books" either. I didn't want to pull another Blackhawk Vol. 1 -- which I still don't have -- so I bit the bullet and paid full price (plus postage) at Bud Plant. No idea when I'll get it.

  • I hope yours arrives undamaged.

  • At least you saw one!

  • "You are not going to believe this" (revisited).

My replacement copy came in today, and guess what? It's damaged!

    ratAA30.gif?profile=RESIZE_710x

It's not damaged as badly as the first one, but the longer this goes on the more determined I am to get a nice one. My shop owner was very apologetic (although it wasn't his fault) and practically insisted returning it as "damaged" for another replacement. I did, but seeing as the first one was returned for the same reason, you'd think they made sure they sent the best one they had in stock (and I don't imagine they have many). The next replacement may be worse.

    Stay tuned for updates.

  • Time for an UPDATE

A couple of weeks ago I asked at my LCS what are the chances of them ever receiving yet another replacement for the D.B. Frankenstein slipcase. I was told "slim to none" BUT the owner thought he still had the second one in his back room. (Sometimes Diamond requires that the damaged item be returned, sometime they do not.) After two weeks of searching, he finally told me that it had, in fact, been returned and likely destroyed. In any case, I can no longer get a copy through Diamond, so I'm back to square one.
