DC X SONIC THE HEDGEHOG: THE METAL LEGION #1 (OF 5)

By Ian Flynn and Adam Bryce Thomas

31092723253?profile=RESIZE_192XFollowing the runaway success of DC x Sonic the Hedgehog in 2025, DC and SEGA of America are teaming up once again for a brand-new five-issue comic book adventure uniting the Justice League with Sonic the Hedgehog and Team Sonic, featuring more character pairings for fans to look forward to.

The worlds of DC Comics’ Justice League and SEGA’s Sonic the Hedgehog™ collide once more in another thrilling crossover filled with action, adventure, laughs, and perils. Mysterious mechanical rings have appeared across both worlds, linking them together and unleashing all things wonderful, worrisome, and weird. The heroes are happily reunited, but little do they suspect there’s a sinister origin behind their unexpected team-ups.

Written by fan-favorite Sonic scribe Ian Flynn and illustrated by returning artist Adam Bryce Thomas, DC x Sonic the Hedgehog: Metal Legion reunites the creative team that helped make the first crossover a smash hit with fans, retailers, and readers of all ages.

"I had an absolute blast the last time around, and I'm really happy that little tease we left at the end of the first crossover is finally coming to fruition," said Flynn. "I hope everyone enjoys this second go around as much as I did writing it!"

The first DC x Sonic the Hedgehog series became one of DC’s most talked-about launches of 2025, racing through multiple printings of issue #1. Fans embraced the high-speed crossover of two iconic worlds, celebrating its energetic storytelling, dynamic artwork, and all-ages appeal. Retailers reported sustained demand throughout the series’ run, making it one of the standout successes of the year. The collected edition is available wherever books are sold.

DC x Sonic the Hedgehog: Metal Legion continues the larger cross-brand partnership between DC and SEGA of America, which spans comic books, apparel, collectibles, toys, and more. The collaboration kicked off with the 2025 comic book series and expanded across consumer products throughout the year, now available at Target, Walmart, and more, with additional initiatives planned for 2026 and beyond.

Not being a gamer, I'm not invested in the Sega characters. But I'm an old fuddy-duddy, which means my opinion is worthless. I'm sure this appeals to many on the younger end of the scale.

JSA #19

31144662867?profile=RESIZE_192X(W) Jeff Lemire (A/CA) Diego Olortegui

THE SEARCH FOR THE SPECTRE BEGINS! The Justice Society of America is putting the pieces back together after its tumultuous run-in with the Injustice Society. But before the dust can settle, the Spectre returns with only one driving mission: VENGEANCE!

"Year One" is over, so now the title returns to the present with "The Search for The Spectre!" I'm all for that, as the Ghostly Guardian is one of my favorite characters. Of course, I've long since realized that he's too powerful to stay for long in a team book, and that even a solo book has to be handled more carefully and imaginatively than most writers can manage. (The John Ostrander series was a bloody miracle.) Anyway, however this works out I expect Spec to move on. The "why" they come up with might be interesting.

In the meantime, I like some of the next-gen characters more than I thought I wouid. I always thought Infinity Inc. was an artifical construct, a way to do a modern-day JSA book without calling it a JSA book. (Roy Thomas is on record not wanting to do a modern-day JSA book at the time, because some same-named characters were mighty active over in JLA. so he did Infinity Inc. and the period-piece All-Star Squadron instead.) There was no good, in-story reason, it seemed to me, for Infinity Inc. to exist outside the JSA framework. I'm not really sure when the Infinitors were folded back into the parent team, but that's where they should be. This title reflects that reality.

And that unity is really the only way I can tolerate some of the Infinitors. Jade and Obsidian are only interesting to me when they interact with their father; otherwise one is superfluous the other is a whiner. They've tried to make Atom-Smasher interesting by making him make a bunch of bad decisions; that just served to make him look stupid to me. (And characters who grow big, absent any other powers, just become bigger targets.) At least lame-os Silver Scarab, Fury, Northwind and Star-Spangled Kid have been dispensed with.

I don't have a problem with the new Dr. Midnight and Dr. Fate. Neither Kent Nelson nor Charles McNider had much in the way of personality, and the new guys bring inexperience and struggle to their respective roles. (Instead of, in Kent Nelson's case, not really needing the others at all.) And the new Kid Eternity's youth and naivete are endearing. (She's what Jakeem Thunder should have been, but DC missed the boat on that, and now he's as boring as Johnny Thunder).

I reserve my greatest ire for the death of Wildcat. Nothing against Yolanda Montez, whose TV turn practically guaranteed a higher profile. But I really miss Ted Grant, who reminds me so much of my father's generation. Yes, he brought all the atavistic social attitudes of that era to the table. I'm sure some of the woman are glad he's gone. But he also brought the can-do, Lee Marvin, no-excuses attitude of the Greatest Generation. That's in short supply today. He was truly a character, whereas with Yolanda all I can say is,"well, she's a girl."

DAN JURGENS AND MIKE PERKINS RETURN TO THE 1940S WITH THE DARK KNIGHT AND THE MAN OF STEEL!

The year is 1940, and most of the Western world is embroiled in a war against a fascist regime whose march across Europe shows no sign of defeat. With global war looming and a vicious killer on the loose, it’s a time of fear and paranoia for those living in Gotham! It’s only been a few months since the city was rescued from undead monsters by the masked vigilante known as the Bat-Man, but a vicious killer has been on a murder spree that’s taking the city to its breaking point. Bodies are turning up in theatrically gruesome ways...all staged with the killer’s calling card: a hangman’s noose. While the Bat-Man endeavors to solve the spate of murders, a young reporter from the Daily Star named Lois Lane arrives in Gotham. Though she is meant to cover a movie premiere, it doesn't take long for Lane to find herself caught in the grips of a new villain in Gotham. One whose mastery of fear will plunge the city into chaos! The creative team of legendary writer Dan Jurgens (The Death of Superman, Booster Gold) and superstar artist Mike Perkins (The Swamp Thing) continue their pulp-noir adventure of the caped crusader in the early years of his vigilante career.

Everybody who reported to the board on Bat-Man: First Knight loved it — including me. Looking forward to Part II, as another Batman Elseworld grows out its timeline.

ZATANNA BY PAUL DINI OMNIBUS HC

31144660859?profile=RESIZE_192X(W) Paul Dini (A) Stephane Roux, Joe Quinones, Cliff Chiang, Various (CA) Adam Hughes

EVEILEB NI CIGAM! The enchanting Zatanna Zatara has the hottest stage act in Las Vegas. And unlike the parlor tricks peddled by other would-be Houdinis, Zatanna’s magic is no illusion. It’s real. The dazzling Mistress of Magic can warp reality with just a few backward words. But the supernatural is powerful...and in the wrong hands, it’s deadly. So, when mystical menaces start causing trouble, Zee steps in to stop them--from the evil sorcerer Brother Night to possessed puppets to nightmare demons. Not to mention a supernatural team-up with the Mistress of Martial Arts--Black Canary! Collects BLACK CANARY AND ZATANNA: BLOODSPELL; DETECTIVE COMICS #824, #833-834, and #843-844; ZATANNA #1-16; ZATANNA: EVERYDAY MAGIC; and stories from DC INFINITE HALLOWEEN SPECIAL #1 and SECRETS OF SINISTER HOUSE #1.

Wait, what? When I saw this title in solicits, I figured I had read everything in it. But Zatanna teaming up with Black Canary? That seems like something I'd remember (if the art wasn't terrible), but I don't have an inkling. And Zatanna was in Secrets of Sinister House? I have very few issues of that book, and the ones I have certainly didn't feature Zatanna, or I'd have gotten more.

Maybe I do need this one, after all.

And besides, if I'm to have any Zatanna on my bookshelf, it should start with Dini's work. He clearly had a soft spot for the character.

ASTONISHING MILES MORALES: SPIDER-MAN — THE ART OF THWIP (2026) #1

Featuring artwork by Alessandro Miracolo and IG Guara, this one-shot collects the first six issues of Astonishing Miles Morales: Spider-Man Infinity Comic, the Marvel Unlimited companion series to Ziglar’s run, in print for the first time. A must-have for fans of the series and those looking for a standalone Miles Morales adventure by one of the character’s defining creators, Astonishing Miles Morales: Spider-Man delivers more personal stories about Miles and his supporting cast and further develops some of the key antagonists of Ziglar’s run, including new additions to Miles’ rouges gallery like Hightail and Bumbler.

Miles Morales and his Amazing Friends—need all the help they can get! Spider-Man does whatever a spider can – but he’ll need a hand from his super-powered friends (and frenemies) to handle Bumbler’s string of art robberies, Hightail’s super-speedy secret mission and Frost Pharaoh’s assault on Brooklyn Visions Academy!

“One thing that I really enjoy about the possibilities of ASTONISHING MILES MORALES: SPIDER-MAN is that it lets us explore parts of Miles that I didn't have room to cover in the main book: mostly his school life and his family life—things that I really enjoy writing, but because the nature of the beast, I wasn’t able to dive in them into them as fully as I would like,” Ziglar told Marvel.com when the Infinity Comic debuted. “It's nice being able to check in on Miles’ school life and personal life and fill out areas that I thought were lacking in the main book.”

Maybe this is the future of comic books: Online comics, occasionally given life in print to an increasingly aging and shrinking audience, until it's all digital all the time.

CIVIL WAR: UNMASKED (2026) #1 (of 5)

In 2006, there was one question every comic fan asked themselves — WHOSE SIDE ARE YOU ON?

Mark Millar and Steve McNiven’s CIVIL WAR, along with its gripping tie-in stories, tore your favorite super heroes apart, redefined event storytelling and unleashed shockwaves across the Marvel Universe that are still felt today. Now, twenty years later, Marvel is revealing secret showdowns and all-new adventures from the epic conflict in CIVIL WAR: UNMASKED, a five-issue limited series launching in May from writer Christos Gage (Battleworld), artist Edgar Salazar (The Last Wolverine), and returning original Civil War colorist Morry Hollowell. Set before, during and after the events of Civil War, each issue of CIVIL WAR: UNMASKED spotlights unseen stories of some of the era’s key players: IRON MAN, SPIDER-MAN, GOLIATH, TIGRA, and CAPTAIN AMERICA.

The original Civil War went on to become one of Marvel’s best-selling collections and the inspiration behind sequels, films, video games, and more. CIVIL WAR: UNMASKED celebrates its legacy by recapturing the exciting spirit of the era and shedding light on its most historic developments from Iron Man and Captain America’s morally complex feud to Spider-Man’s shocking unmasking. An anniversary series two decades in the making, the sagas will be packed with twists and surprises, including ones that will impact present-day storytelling.

It begins with an urgent mission from Bishop that takes Tony Stark into the Days of Future Past timeline, where the revelation of the apocalyptic future changes everything Tony thought he knew about the consequences of the Superhuman Registration Act.

On his personal connection to Civil War, Gage explained, “In 2006, I was a rookie comic book writer when a short delay in the production of the epic Civil War event limited series led to me being offered the one-shot Iron Man/Captain America: Casualties of War. It was my first really high profile project at Marvel, a big hit, and 20 years later, they still haven't managed to get rid of me! So it's a thrill and an honor to revisit that troubled time with CIVIL WAR: UNMASKED, in which I have the privilege of joining with brilliant artist Edgar Salazar and trend-setting original Civil War colorist Morry Hollowell to reveal never-before-told stories from that milestone event!

“The really cool thing for me, re-reading the original event, was realizing how many opportunities there were to go deeper into the story,” Gage told Marvel.com in a recent interview. “That’s why we called it Unmasked. It’s an allusion to the literal unmasking required by the Superhuman Registration Act, of course, but it also refers to getting into the heads of some of the main characters to ‘unmask’ why they made some of the consequential decisions they did.”

I don't need to re-visit Civil War. What I need is for Marvel to stop looking backward, and give me something new to enjoy.

CASSIAN ANDOR’S FINAL MISSION BEFORE HE MEETS HIS ULTIMATE HEROIC DESTINY!

Before the heist that shook the galaxy, a lone Rebel operative walks into danger. Cassian Andor infiltrates the lawless maze of Kafrene, racing against troopers, bounty hunters and time itself in a tense espionage thriller.

Ten years ago, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story introduced the group of unlikely heroes who stole the plans to the original Death Star and set the stage for the Rebellion’s greatest victory. Announced in February, Marvel Comics will celebrate the anniversary of the beloved film by publishing five one-shots spotlighting its key characters, starting in May with Cassian Andor, who went on to headline the film’s Emmy and Peabody Award-winning Disney+ prequel series, Andor. Returning to the grit and glory of a Rebellion on the brink of war, the all-new stories will be set just prior to the events of the film, revealing never-before-told backstories and adventures from this pivotal era. Today, fans can see David Marquez’s covers for all five one-shots and a special sneak peek at STAR WARS: ROGUE ONE - CASSIAN ANDOR #1 by Benjamin Percy and Luke Ross, hitting stands on May 6.

“When we first meet Cassian Andor, he kills Tivik, a rebel informant, in cold blood. I remember looking around the theater, because I could not believe what I was seeing. That moment on the Ring of Kafrene truly made me understand how different this film was going to be, and I knew I wanted to go exactly there for this opening issue because there’s a lot happening around the edges that we don’t see,” Percy told io9 when the book was announced. “I’m paired on this with the brilliant artist Luke Ross and we’re giving you the story of what leads up to that unforgettable, character- and franchise-defining moment. Get ready for bounty hunters, stormtroopers, Krennic, K2, and a whole lot at stake for both the rebellion and the Empire.”

I'm not sure what this can give us that Andor didn't. But I loved Andor so much I'm tempted to read this and find out. But then I'll be committed to all the other one-shots on the way (Jyn Erso, Saw Gerrero, etc.) and I don't think I'm that committed. Maybe when it's collected.

IF DESTRUCTION BE OUR LOT #1

31092735077?profile=RESIZE_192X31092735260?profile=RESIZE_192XBestselling co-writers Mark Elijah Rosenberg (Approaching the Unknown, Year Million) and Matthew Rosenberg (We're Taking Everyone Down With Us, 4 Kids Walk Into A Bank) team up with brilliant artist extraordinaire Andy Macdonald (Doctor Strange, Wonder Woman) colorist Francesco Segala, and letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou for an action-packed, sci-fi adventure in the upcoming If Destruction Be Our Lot. This ongoing thrill-ride was first announced exclusively at IGN and is set to launch in May from Image Comics.

The series will also feature eye-popping variant covers by such artistic titans as Jerome Opeña, James Harren, Tradd Moore, and more.

In If Destruction Be Our Lot, humanity is extinct and all that remains are the robots who once helped us.The robots are happier now, doing their work without human interference. But not Abe, a robotic replicant of Abraham Lincoln in search of meaning beyond the daily grind. Abe believes there must be something more out there beyond the edge of the city. After nearly getting killed, he's determined to wander the Earth until he finds it... or gets recycled trying.

"As someone coming into comics from the film industry, I’ve been dazzled by the creative possibilities,” said Mark Rosenberg in IGN’s exclusive coverage. “And we're making something that feels important to us because it deals with real issues through a totally bizarre metaphor, but in the end it’s all about the search for one primal, universal thing: friendship. Even if it’s only with a talking toaster.”

Matthew Rosenberg added: "This is a story I've wanted to tell for a long time. But working on it for the last few years it has really become something so much bigger, funnier, sadder, weirder, and more hopeful than I ever could have dreamt. And getting to make it with two of my favorite old collaborators, Andy, and Hassan, one of my favorite new collaborators, Francesco, and my favorite brother, Mark, has been one of the highlights of my career."

“My hatred of A.I. is matched only by my love for weird little robots,” said MacDonald. “So getting to make a comic about a weird guy looking for meaning in a world that has left him behind is both prescient and incredibly fun. I can't wait for people to enter our world of lonely robots.”

I love the idea of robo-Lincoln, if for no other reason than to visit with our greatest president (by proxy) once a month. My soul needs to feel our country's ideals again. So I'll check this one out.

LADY MECHANIKA: THE MECHANICAL MENAGERIE #1 (OF 4)

Acclaimed creator Joe Benitez returns to the world of Lady Mechanika with an all-new chapter in Lady Mechanika: The Mechanical Menagerie. Written by Madeleine Holly-Rosing (Boston Metaphysical Society) and illustrated by Benitez and Martin Montiel, this four-issue miniseries plunges readers into a haunting steampunk mystery this May from Image Comics.

When Lewis, Fred, and Allie stumble upon an abandoned amusement park, their curiosity awakens something that should have remained lost to time. As strange mechanical threats emerge from the shadows, Lady Mechanika teams up with Inspector Singh to investigate the whereabouts of the sinister Mistress Grimm and her elusive Reapers—before the past claims even more victims.

"I had a lot of fun returning to the interiors and immersing myself in the characters again," said Benitez. "Some interesting developments unfold in this story, so you don’t want to miss it!"

Blending action, adventure, and gothic steampunk spectacle, The Mechanical Menagerie is a perfect entry point for new readers and a must-read for longtime fans of the series.

GIven the glorious visual esthetics and Frankenstein-style origin, this book really ought to be bigger than it is. In fact, it ought to be a movie or TV series. I haven't read a lot of Lady Mechanika, so maybe her personality and/or supporting cast is lacking. That could be fixed easily, especially with a charismatic actress (Melissa Benoist, say) and good writing in a TV show. Too expensive, maybe.

SHE-SPAWN #1 (OF 5)

31092502289?profile=RESIZE_192X31092502101?profile=RESIZE_192XTodd McFarlane Productions is excited to announce She-Spawn, a new five-issue Spawn Universe miniseries written by award-winning comics writer Gail Simone (X-Men, Birds of Prey) and illustrated by Ig Guara. The series marks Simone’s first project collaborating alongside Todd McFarlane and arrives in stores this May with a robust debut presentation of multiple cover options.

She-Spawn centers around Jessica Priest, a character whose life has been shaped by violence, duty, and sacrifice. A former solider, assassin, superhero, and mother, Priest now finds herself pulled into a brutal confrontation with an angelic cult determined to sacrifice a child in the name of their God. What begins as a mission quickly becomes something far more personal, forcing Jessica to confront the regret and responsibility that have followed her long after she stepped into the role of She-Spawn.

Jessica Priest has been leading The Scorched super-hero team under the watchful eye of Spawn, serving as a crucial line of defense when he cannot be everywhere at once. Readers have seen her navigate high-stakes missions and mounting pressure throughout The Scorched regular comic series, which is about to reach its 50th issue. While this She-Spawn miniseries stands on its own as a complete story arc, it draws from the character’s existing history, offering a deeper look at her current state of mind rather than tying directly to a specific event or crossover.

Simone brings her distinct voice to this new She-Spawn series, leaning into themes of power, consequences, and moral ambiguity while framing Jessica Priest as a deeply human figure navigating a supernatural world.

“Look, at times, the goal of publishing comic books that fans want to read can be quite simple," said McFarlane when sharing his thoughts on the creative team behind She-Spawn and the approach behind the new miniseries. "Choose a character the readers want to see more of, tell a story that is engaging, price the book fairly and hire smart, creative people. That’s what I think we’ve done here. Writer Gail Simone has been on my (and thousands of other folks') radar for quite some time. I’ve admired her taking many different heroes and characters into worlds that feel like I’ve met that personality before. So, to now have the chance to get her to bring that talent to the Spawn Universe was an opportunity I wasn’t going to pass up. Her enthusiasm for her story of the Jessica Priest character along with her advocating for the artistic skills of the wonderful Ig Guara made this a creative team I am anxiously awaiting to see myself as a comic book fan. I hope the fans will give this book a look as I promise they won’t be disappointed.

Simone added: “It’s a thrill to be chosen specifically by one of the iconic founders of Image to create in his playground. Apparently, he’d read a DC book I’d done and was impressed by the dialogue, which was incredibly gratifying. The next thing I know, I was having hour-long conversations with Todd McFarlane–not just about She-Spawn, but about his passion for storytelling and character. Each one felt like a masterclass. He asked a lot about my process, with genuine and heartfelt curiosity, and it was one of the nicest and most collaborative introductions I’ve ever had with a publisher. I’m proud to get to write part of the Spawn Universe, and grateful to Todd and his team for making this connection happen. I also want to give credit to Erica Schultz, writer of the incredible Rat City Spawn series for helping me pave the path for She-Spawn.

“About She-Spawn herself, I love her. I see her as one of the few supernatural badasses who drives a pick-up truck and has a family cabin in the woods. She goes up against a religious sect to save a child, making her a bad person fighting for something good, with stakes she couldn’t possibly imagine. Ig Guara did meticulous, gorgeous work, with typically beautiful classic Image coloring by Robert Nugent. It just looks stunning. It’s a story with no-seat belt and the engines on high––violent, a little kind, a little mean, about an exploration of the country and a character’s soul.”

It was only a matter of time.

SLEEPY HOLLOW --- WITCHES OF THE WESTERN WOOD #1

31144668868?profile=RESIZE_192XAuthor Delilah S. Dawson
Illustrated by Jose Jaro
Cover Design or Artwork by Luana Vecchio

Revisit the world of Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow in this prequel, The Witches of the Western Wood!

Before Mary Van Tassel terrorized the town of Sleepy Hollow with the devilish Headless Horseman, she was Sarah Archer—a young girl trying to survive her witch of a mother. Sarah and her twin are raised in the wild Western Wood, taught the ways of witchcraft, and forced to endure abuse and neglect. But a chance encounter with the hellish Hessian at the moment of his beheading lights a fire in Sarah, giving her the power to overcome those who have wronged her and grow into a fearsome witch.

From Delilah Dawson and Jose Jaro comes the tale of Sarah Archer’s corruption and the Headless Horseman’s first ride.

So it's a Headless Horseman origin story? Count me in!

AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER — THE KYOSHI WARRIORS #1

31087148875?profile=RESIZE_400xDark Horse Comics, in collaboration with Avatar Studios and Avatar: The Last Airbender co-creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, presents Avatar: The Last Airbender — Kyoshi Warriors, a brand-new tale of the Kyoshi Warriors. This story will be told across three monthly single-issue comics, with the first issue arriving in May 2026. The series will be written by Brandon Hoáng (The Crossbow of Destiny), illustrated by BellBessa (Avatar: The Last Airbender—Ramen Rumble) and Xanthe Bouma, colored by Adele Matera (Avatar: The Last Airbender — Ashes of the Academy), and lettered by Comicraft’s Jimmy Betancourt (Ghostbusters: Dead Man’s Chest). Each issue will also feature cover art by Danielle Weires.

Suki and the Kyoshi Warriors leave their island home to join the war against the Fire Nation. Met with suspicion and resentment by the mainlanders, they struggle to prove their worth to the Earth Kingdom. But when that opportunity arises, will they be willing to compromise their values as Kyoshi Warriors to embrace it?

Praise for Avatar: The Last Airbender graphic novels:

“Avatar: The Last Airbender—Suki, Alone develops a key Avatarverse character on a solo journey that turns out deeply interconnected to the storyworld at large. It’s a story that emphasizes how versatile this world is for telling all kinds of stories.”–Multiversity Comics

“All in all, Ashes of the Academy is a fantastic addition to the expanding lore of Avatar: The Last Airbender. It’s fun, it’s thoughtful, and frankly, more Avatar stories are always welcome.”–Gaming Trend

“While rooted in the established world of Avatar: The Last Airbender, Ashes of the Academy brings something fresh and exciting to the table. It blends familiar faces and new challenges, adding depth to the beloved universe.”–Screen Rant

“A meaningful one-off about adapting to change that will satisfy Avatar: The Last Airbender fans.”–School Library Journal on Avatar: The Last Airbender–The Bounty Hunter and the Tea Brewer

I'm not into either Avatar (Airbender's, or James Cameron's), but many are. So here you go. You really can't go wrong with Japanese fan-dance fighting.

NO. 7: DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT

BEN 10 #1

Following the initial announcement at New York Comic Con, Dynamite Entertainment and Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products announce further details for the hotly anticipated return of Ben 10 via comic books!

The franchise's original creators, the fabulous foursome of Man of Action Entertainment (MOA) are all set to return to the character and mythos in this new comic book series that fans have been anxiously awaiting! Joe Casey, Joe Kelly, Duncan Rouleau, and Steven T. Seagle all come from an initial background in comics, before they joined together to form a powerhouse collective for comics, animation, television, film, and beyond. In addition to Ben 10, the crew have created and contributed to hit properties including Superman, Spider-Man, and the creation of Big Hero 6.

This new era of Ben 10 comic books kicks off this May with an initial story arc led by Joe Casey and artist Robert Carey. The beloved scribe has wowed readers and critics alike for nearly three decades, across WildC.A.T.s, Superman, X-Men, Avengers, Gødland, Youngblood, as well as recent Dynamite and Warner Bros. Discovery gems Jonny Quest and Space Ghost. Carey's gorgeous artwork has featured in titles including James Bond and Jennifer Blood.

The collective MOA team will drive the stories in the comic series, with individual partners taking turns scripting story arcs as the title progresses. Future tales from Kelly, Rouleau, and Seagle will be announced as they come around, offering fans new and old exciting visions of the franchise!

This concept started life as a cartoon, right? I think I saw it as an option on some streamer or other. I'm sure for the right age group, this is a must-get.

RED SONJA SHE DEVIL WITH A SWORD #1

31092502682?profile=RESIZE_192XDynamite Entertainment announces a brand-new flagship ongoing series hitting fans this May, as Red Sonja rips and tears into She-Devil With a Sword driven by writer Rory McConville (The Terminator: Metal, Spawn) and artist Pablo de Bonis.

"Know also, ‘o prince, that in the self-same days that the Cimmerian did stalk the Hyborian Kingdoms, one of the few swords worthy to cross with his was that of Red Sonja, warrior-woman out of majestic Hyrkania.” — The Nemedian Chronicles

Irish icon Rory McConville has been a rapidly rising star in comics, a key powerhouse in the revived scorching hot popularity of the Spawn mythos contributing to multiple titles, chronicling the latest cases of Judge Dredd, independent titles like Time Before Time and Write It In Blood, and has dipped his toes into the Dynamite pool co-writing The Terminator: Metal alongside Declan Shalvey. Now he's jumping headfirst into the deep end by taking on one of the publisher's crown jewels. Rory is joined in this bold new series by artist Pablo de Bonis (North End). The duo and the rest of the creative team are sharpening their swords, ready to present an all-new set of sagas starring the She-Devil.

The fiery-haired heroine of Hyrkania finds herself caught in the middle of a spring of revolution. A turbulent movement is determined to reshape all of Hyboria in their image, and have no interest in sparing anyone in their way. The She-Devil must protect the last descendant of an ancient bloodline from their scourge. The person under Sonja's protection, Aretha, is needed for a blood ritual, and Sonja sets out to try to free her from this cursed fate. Questions will arise through this latest quest that will shake the She-Devil to her core!

"I'm thrilled to be journeying to Hyboria for the She Devil's latest adventure," said writer Rory McConville. "As the series begins, Sonja is just trying to enjoy a quiet tankard of ale or three when an old ally's plea for aid pulls her into a revolutionary crisis on the brink of toppling the corrupt kingdom of Koth and unleashing dangers that could engulf all of Hyboria. I'm fortunate to be working with the incredibly talented Pablo de Bonis. When I first saw his pages, I knew readers were in for something special and I can't wait for them to join us on this quest."

Red Sonja: She-Devil With a Sword #1 features the first appearance of the Brotherhood of the Rising Sun, as well as several new friends and foes of Red Sonja in her ongoing epics.

The first issue features a range of electrifying cover artists including an instantly iconic piece by Stuart Sayger, the return of fan-favorites Lucio Parrillo and Joseph Michael Linsner, as well as Mike Rooth, and a cosplay photo from Woman of Wonder. Fans can customize their own cover or get one from a favorite creator via a Blank Authentix. For collectors who love the chase and mystery, a premium blind bag is available featuring three limited editions of the issue selected randomly from a range of covers exclusive to this offering.

This is only the beginning. Red Sonja: She-Devil With a Sword launches a new wave of epic adventures for the She-Devil — one of several major projects set to thunder onto shelves in 2026 and beyond!

Red Sonja, like Vampirella, was a character I was following when I fell off the monthly bus for some reason. And now I feel like I'm too far behind. But it's an episodic sort of series, isn't it? Maybe I can jump back on here.

An oversized, expanded edition of Fantastic Four: Full Circle—the award-winning national bestseller, named Graphic Novel of the Year by the National Cartoonists Society and the Washington Post—with 288 pages of new material, including commentary and unpublished preparatory material from Alex RossThe critically acclaimed, award-winning national bestseller—the first original graphic novel on the Marvel Arts list—now in an oversized, deluxe expanded edition. This new edition has 288 additional pages of jaw-dropping bonus material from Ross (the original graphic novel was 64 pages), as he walks readers through his process and vision for the making of the book School Library Journal called a “pop art masterpiece.” Showcasing early visual concepts through final art, Ross takes readers behind-the-scenes, revealing for the first time his proposal, thumbnails, sketches, inks, and color guides. The book also includes commentary from Ross as well as reprints of the classic Marvel comic from Stan Lee and Jack Kirby that inspired Fantastic Four: Full Circle—Fantastic Four no. 51—and the subsequent run of covers from 2023 which Alex Ross created for Marvel Comics, featuring the Fantastic Four in costumes designed for Fantastic Four: Full Circle. An essential addition to any Alex Ross fan’s bookshelf, Fantastic Four: Full Circle (Expanded Edition) is a comprehensive look at the creative process of one of the most acclaimed and influential artists of our time.

I enjoyed this well enough, but I don't think I need a "director's cut." I think I'll save my money for Abrams' next Marvel outing.

FANTASTIC FOUR NO 1 PANEL BY PANEL HC

31144681666?profile=RESIZE_192X(W) Stan Lee (A/CA) Jack Kirby

Stunningly photographed by award-winning photographer Geoff Spear, Fantastic Four No. 1 is showcased as you’ve never seen it before—oversize and up close—in this gorgeous panel-by-panel exploration of the entire issue.Fantastic Four No. 1: Panel by Panel is the iconic and influential first issue of the Marvel classic comic by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. ?This volume captures every single detail and nuance of Lee’s story and Kirby’s groundbreaking artwork, making it a must-have for every comic book collection. The first issue of Fantastic Four by legendary creators Stan Lee and Jack Kirby introduced fans to a now-iconic team of Super Heroes—Mister Fantastic, the Invisible Girl, the Human Torch, and the Thing—ushering in the modern Marvel Age of comics. Kirby’s artistic contributions in this comic book revolutionized visual storytelling and brought a new reality to the way comics stories could be told, the ripple effects of which continue to influence comic book art to this day.Decades after its publication in November 1961, this reimagining by award-winning graphic designer Chip Kidd uses an original copy of the comic book (which initially sold for 10 cents and now sells for astronomical prices in good condition) to present the classic story in a whole new way that is sure to engage both lifelong fans and the latest generation of Marvel enthusiasts. The book also includes text by Marvel editor Tom Brevoort and historian Mark Evanier (Kirby: King of Comics).

Fantastic Four #1 is a pretty important book in the history of American comics, but would it really stand up to this sort of granular scholarship? I think not. I might get it as a novelty, or as a gift for my FF-crazy cousin. But I don't I'm going to learn anything I didn't already get from reading the thing a jillion times.

31144681900?profile=RESIZE_192X31144682262?profile=RESIZE_192X(W) Robert Venditti (A/CA) David Lapham

New York Times best-selling writer Robert Venditti (SUPERMAN '78, PLANET DEATH) and world-renowned comics legend, David Lapham (STRAY BULLETS, THE HERO TRADE), have combined powers to bring you a striking new vision in the fight against crime. Hank Howard is back in the one place he thought he'd finally left behind, his hometown of Tampa. But unfortunately for Hank, pizza crime doesn't take a vacation. Before he knows it, he's knee-deep in his first homicide case, facing down lawyers, locking lips with a long-lost flame, punching pirates, and dodging bullets, as he races against time to solve his first-ever homicide case!

I rarely post Bad Idea books, because they're hard to find in my neck of the woods (and I imagine others), and they don't collect the work in any way (which, mysteriously, they talk up as a selling point). But this one's got Robert Venditti, who's pretty celebrated, and David Lapham, one of Jeff of Earth-J's favorites.

Borrowed from real world stories and little known events of the war, Dog Tag asks big questions about the war while focusing on the heroism of the ordinary people who lived and died during the conflict.

EXCOMMUNICATED #1

31101161869?profile=RESIZE_400xVault and New York Times bestselling author Jeremy Robinson have announced Excommunicated, a jaw droppingly excellent new supernatural horror comic book series. Written by Robinson, drawn by Tiago Palma, colored by Manuel J. Rodriguez, lettered by Jim Campbell, and designed by Tim Daniel, Excommunicated weaves an intricate web of sinister mystery, horror, action, and demonic collusion.

In Excommunicated, a faithful nun and a festering demon are excommunicated from the church—and from hell—because of a botched exorcism, and they must work together to uncover a sinister plot that endangers their lives and the world.

Series creator and writer Jeremy Robinson says: "My whole life I've been what people call ‘steeped in the Bible.’ I've incorporated this knowledge into my novels the way I do other religions and mythologies, but I really wanted to use my recent discoveries regarding original translations of the Biblical texts that fundamentally change the game—specifically concerning the satan (yes, lowercase) and the strange beings known as Elohim. Me being me, I wrote a story that is sinister, action-packed, and funny, but made even cooler by a supernatural backdrop far more interesting than what we've all been taught in Sunday school and by Hollywood."

"After working with Tiago Palma, Manual Rodriguez, and Jim Campbell on other comics, I knew they were the dream team for Excommunicated and they delivered in spades, perfectly capturing the characters, Boston locations, demonic horrors, and...maybe a little gore. The result is a book that I'm very proud of and super excited for people to read. It's weird to be a fan of something I played a part in creating, but I am a fan of Sister Josephine and Edimmu!"

Jeremy Robinson is the #1 Audible and New York Times bestselling author of nearly 100 novels, published in fourteen languages, including INFINITE, THE OTHERS, and the GOOD BOYS trilogy. His high-octane blend of science fiction, horror, and action has captivated millions of readers worldwide. A television series based on his cult-favorite novel PROJECT NEMESIS is currently in development with director Chad Stahelski (John Wick 1–4) and produced by Original Film and Sony Pictures Television.

Robinson’s latest creative frontier is Breakneck Comics, his imprint for publishing bold, bizarre, and beautifully illustrated graphic novels—three per year, to match the furious pace of his prose output.

I'm sure you can, Cap. As long-time comics fans, we sometimes feel the need to get in on the ground floor of something, or have read everything that comes before the story that has really caught our eye. I'm trying to fight that impulse. These characters and stories aren't really all that complex, and if we feel like we're missing some history as we move forward, we can always go back later. But it's best to read the thing that has us juiced right this minute. Strike while the iron is hot!

As for your query about Zatanna in Secrets of Sinister House, I'm sure that's not the original title, but one of DC's periodic holiday anthologies. They sometimes use the title of an old DC property to keep the trademark alive.

  • This concept started life as a cartoon, right?

Yes, Ben10 was a cartoon. I'm given to understand that it was quite popular with people that liked it.

  • I'm not really sure when the Infinitors were folded back into the parent team, but that's where they should be.

    SHE-SPAWN #1 (OF 5) - It was only a matter of time.

Me, I'm holding out for She-Venom.

FANTASTIC FOUR FULL CIRCLE HC EXPANDED EDITION - I enjoyed this well enough, but I don't think I need a "director's cut."

Agreed. I might recommend it to someone who hasn't read the first edition.

FANTASTIC FOUR NO 1 PANEL BY PANEL HC ...would it really stand up to this sort of granular scholarship? I think not.

Again, agreed. Seems to me this has been released once before. I didn't buy it then, either.

BAD IDEA - But this one's got... David Lapham, one of Jeff of Earth-J's favorites.

Yes, I'll give this one a try. I've never heard of it before, but my LCS carries "Bad Idea" comics. (I can't get over that name... did something think that was a good idea?) My retailer plays poker with Lapham at cons and tells me Lapham makes more money from "Bad Idea" than he ever has with Stray Bullets... which is why we'll never see Stray Bullets again. I don't see why "Bad Idea" can't publish Stray Bullets. and Lapham didn't make a profit whe SB was at Image?

COMICS THE MAGAZINE #3 - I took a closer look at Comics the Magazine #1 on Wednesday but I couldn't really get a feel for it without buying and reading it.

As long-time comics fans, we sometimes feel the need to get in on the ground floor of something...

Yes, but that wasn't always the case. When I bought my first issue of Fantastic Four (#126) or Captain America (#119) or Iron Man (#16) or Spider-Man (#72) or Hulk (#172) or any number of others, I never dreamed that someday I'd own all the issues leading up to it (in one form or another). Recently I've been trying relive those experiences by occasionally buying random issues of series I have dropped. This is not my first rodeo, after all.

    • Me, I'm holding out for She-Venom.

Hmm... have you been following that corner of Marvel Comics, Jeff?

The current status quo may (or may not) surprise you.

I'm a little baffled by this panel, Jeff. When and where did it come from?

It's got Star-Spangled Kid, so it must be from before he became Skyman in 1986 (and later died).

It's got Silver Scarab, before Hector Hall died the first time in 1987 (then became Doctor Fate, and then Sandman)

Speaking of Sandman, two guys wore that red-and-yellow outfit, and one of them was Hector Hall. The other was Garrett Sandford, who had a six-issue series in 1976. He had a kid tagalong named Jed, but I don't think he ever suited up. But maybe he did, and this is him. Hector Hall appeared in the suit in Infinity Inc. #49-50 in 1988, so it must be before that.

Hourman is HourGIRL. I have never seen this character before that I recall.

It's got Robin, who was erased in Crisis on Infinite Earths (1985-86).

It's got the original Atom, so it's before he died in Zero Hour (1992).

Dr. Midnight is in her original -- and grotesque -- costume, which debuted in 1985. I think she continued to wear it until the end of the series in 1988. I don't remember when she changed it, only that I'm grateful that she did.

It's got Northwind, who quit Infinity Inc. after Hall's death in 1987.

It doesn't have Rick Tyler at all.

It doesn't have Alan Scott, either, either as Green Lantern or Sentinel.

It's got The Spectre, who didn't appear in Infinity Inc. at all, as far as I remember. He appears to be suffering from a chill.

    And who's taking the picture?

The closest I can get is that it has to fall between 1985 (Midnight's intro) and 1987 (Hall's death). But, obviously, I still have questions.

    • This pinup came from the Justice Society of America Annual vol. 3 #1 (August 2008).  It purported to  show an Earth-2 where the Crisis never happened,  so a lot of stuff we read never happened to this version of the characters.   There wasn't much done with this iteration,  so the mysteries introduced here seem to remain unsolved.  My head canon is that the guy in the Sandman suit was a grown up (and de-siliconed) Sandy Hawkins, but I have no idea if Hourgirl is someone who took up the mantle after Rick gave up rather than deal with the side effects of Miraclo,  or if Rick either never existed or at least never became Hourman in this timeline.  In light of recent speculation in the JSA read through,  I like to think that Hourgirl was Rex's granddaughter by way of a child he had with his first wife, Regina Bannerman.  I assume the "real time" concept was suspended,  as the Huntress should have been 60 or so in 2008.

I don't think the Spectre has a chill, I think he's just hoping Johnny Thunder doesn't start talking to him.
