" GONE WITH THE WIND " ( spoilers )

I really DO fond my header a little amusin' , 'yknow , so I shall self-indulge/" hee hee " over it a bit - Now , maybe it's not that funny , if you thinkseth about it ( remember my " The Ethos Of Spoilers " post a ways back ) .

Anyway , I saw AMC's broadcast of Fleming ( Cukor ) 's film of Mitchell's novel ( which I have never read ) this past Turkey Day .

I ran into it quite by suprise , simply seeing it listed on the TV Guide Channel's listing of what was on AMC , tuned in , thinking I'd see just the beginning - for , comics fan roots-wise , the presence of George Reeves ! ( which see ) but , um , " it pulled me back in again " . Heh heh .

Was it uncut on AMC ? It seemed to fit into exactly five hours , which seemd strange , and it , almost , DID seem , when I watched the first couple reels or so all over after the beginninmg of the 2nd showing , like the 2nd time around there was more shown of the montage of Scarlett/her father/the returning slaves in the fields...

  • ...I had forgotten a fair number of the secondary plot details within the greater arc in the fifteenish years since I'd last seen the film ( Never read the novel - Dave Sim reference time now !!! )...

  • I saw GONE WITH THE WIND when it was run on the network over 2 nights... and hated it.  Many years later, it was reissued to theatres, and I made a point of taking my Dad to see it, because I knew HE loved the movie, and I figured, if I was ever gonna SUFFER thru this awful soap-opera again, seeing it on a big screen was the way to do it!  Yep, I actually did enjhoy it the 2nd time. But I don't expect to ever sit through it again.

  • ...For another story I'll tell you , soon , about how GWTW...won out over Spike Lee !!!!!!!!!

      Hee hee hee .

...Was that a 60th Ann. reish in the late 90s , Henry ?

I believe that reish restored the original " Academy Ratio " dimensions of the screen ( The " nearly a box " picture dimensions that essentiall ALL Hollywood movies had pre-TV . ) , whereas I guess my 70s screening with Dad was in some " phony widescreen " that would've cut off mucha th' pic...

  • I find it absurd to mess with a film's picture for the sake of trying to create a widescreen that wasn't there.  I mean, every time I saw FANTASIA, the picture was just about SQUARE.

Isn't that as bad as taking an actual widescreen movie and running it "full screen" on TV?  In the last 10 years, I've begun to really notice how much I'm missing with some films, especially if I happen to see them in "letterbox".  THE IPCRESS FILE was an extreme case-- it seemed to be in VERY WIDE widescreen, and when I got to see it properly, it struck me that the directror had gone to extremes to compose the shots for the FULL width.  Which meant if you didn't see it in widescreen, it was like watching a completely different movie.

The WEIRD thing I've heard about is when they shoot a film in one ratio while intending it to be another... and have the top and bottom of the screen "open" so there's more there than it MEANT to be seen.  When I saw JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS in a theatre, it was (accidentally?) run this way, and you could see the microphone booms in EVERY SHOT!!!  (They weren't there when it turned up on TV.)

  • ...Henry , you are a brave ~ brave ~ man .

From all I have heard , to SEE that " JATP " movie...!

As for " the cinema of boom mikes " , ever see George Axelrod's LORD LOVE A DUCK ?

  • I guess 2 things made it easy for me to sit thru the JOSIE movie.  First, I'd already been watching SABRINA on TV for several years by then (another live-action version of an ARCHIE comic).  Second, the band in the movie reminded me a lot of some friends of mine who actually are a band like that, except without the level of artificial "success". I've never seen them play at a bowling alley, but I have seen them play at a music store, and at a college event.

Also, Tara Reid as Melody Valentine was such a sweetie!  I was amazed at how she managed to so perfectly capture the personality of the original character, but with an added level.  The movie's Melody is actually a lot smarter than the comic's (or cartoon's) Melody, but the outward aura she presents to most people hides this.

Oh yeah... and I REALLY liked the music. It was VERY much like the kind of stuff I'd been enjoying at that time, which you didn't see on TV or hear on radio-- you had to seek it out yourself in obscure record stores or at "bar shows".

I felt they missed an obvous bet by not managing to have the band turn up on the SABRINA show, at least for a cameo.

  • I'm not sure how we got on Josie and the Pussycats, but Henry, by god, you should go buy the soundtrack. The songs are complete versions of what you hear in the film, and honestly, there's not a dud on the whole album! I've talked to many people who say it's a guilty pleasure for them to listen to.

  • I got the soundtrack when it came out.  The 2 songs by the artificial "boy band" (GROUP! NOT BAND!) were awful, but then I'm sure they were meant to be.

I've also got the Rhino Handmade limited-edition CD of the original JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS, which featured Cheryl Ladd on a couple of tunes. It's kinda funny that on the cartoons, VALERIE (the drummer) was the lead singer. (Which made them sound a bit like The Supremes.)

  • ...Maybe they could do a " reunion tour " with , the original leader up front and entirely latter-day members from a post-the original group behind her , as Diana Ross did with members of the Supremes at one point ???

Val touring with members of the 00s magna version , say ???...:-)
