Now that I am completely caught up with Doctor Who, I FINALLY started watching Lost (for the first time, so no “spoilers”!) over the weekend. Three episodes in, I must admit I find myself caught up in the intrigue. It reminds me a bit of Marvel’s Skull the Slayer, but less super-heroey. I’m paying very close attention (or trying to) to all the hints and details. One of the “mysteries” on which I speculated in part one of the pilot has already been resolved in part two, so it’s a moot point.

I expect this is going to be a bit like a 1940s movie serial (but slicker) in that some bits are going to left out only to be revealed later. The hero’s car goes over the cliff at the end of one installment, but we’re not shown him jumping out until the beginning of the next. I’ve already seen that to some extent. For example, Kate is left alone with the US marshal, and shortly thereafter, the other guy shoots him in the chest with the gun Kate was holding. There’s a scene missing!

I like Kate, though. I think I’m supposed to at this point, but I also think I’ve made the right decision. She saved the farmer’s life at the risk of being captured in the flashback, but even more telling, she affixed the oxygen mask to the marshal’s face when he was unconscious.

I do think watching shows on DVD is the way to go. Based on a strong opening season, I watched Heroes for three years only to have it cancelled out from under me with no resolution (rumors of a TV movie to tie up loose ends notwithstanding). What a waste of my time! At least I know going in I won’t have that problem with Lost.

This show continually stretches one's willing sense of disbelief, but there ain't no way that doctor's 2004 Beemer has a cassette deck in the dash, uh-uh, no way, ain't buyin' it!
Finished watching Lost Season One over the weekend.

Buffy and Angel, Firefly, Doctor Who, now Lost.

I’ve discovered so much good TV through this board!

Thanks!

W-A-A-A-A-A-A-L-L-L-L-L-L-T-T-T-T-T-!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It was an emotional, shocking and suspenseful season finale, on par with the Borgification of Picard! The cast divided, more discoveries, more questions and more people involved. That was a looong summer!
WELL, THIS SUCKS!

Our DVD player is incompatable with the format of Lost Seasons 2-6. The DVD manufacturer suggests we contact the manufacturer of the DVD player to see if they have some sort of a free upgrade we can install. Other than that, we'll need to buy a new DVD player in order to watch the rest of Lost. Our TV/DVD/VHS is all one unit, so we'll probably have to buy an entirely new TV, too.

Grrr...
Doh!
Wow, I've never heard of that happening.
I never have either! It loads and goes to the menu screens but will not play. It works properly on our computer, so the problem is definitely with the DVD/TV. (Well, no... as far as I am concerned, the "problem" is with the disc!)

This is going to give Tracy the excuse to buy the 7-DVD magazine changer she's been coveting. She doesn't like having to get up between shows to change discs from Mad About You to Lost to (starting again September 7) Doctor Who. I still remember the days we had to get up off the couch just to to change channels or adjust the volume, so I've been saying no. We wouldn't necessarily need to buy a new TV, but now that it's no longer going to be a one-component set-up, that'll probably be next!
Is it possible that the retailer sent you discs from the wrong region, Jeff? I ordered season eight of The Simpsons from Target's website a few years ago, and they accidentally sent me a region 2 set, which of course wouldn't play on either of my region 1 DVD players.
No, it’s definitely a region one DVD, it’s just that our TV/VHS/DVD combo is too old to play DVDs with “layered” content. Assuming this is the wave of the future and we will begin to encounter this problem more and more frequently going forward, we bought a new HiDef/BluRay/DVD player yesterday (the first step in a long-term goal of getting a HiDef satellite receiver and HiDef widescreen TV). I was surprised to discover the player was much cheaper than I expected; not too much more expensive than an average (for me) trip to my LCS.

SO!

Last night, after a one-day delay, we watched the first episode of the second season. If this island is not somehow located on the planet from the “Shore Leave” episode of Star Trek (still a viable theory I have yet to see disproven ;) ), my new theory is that it’s the island from The Prisoner. (Maybe “the others” are actually the inhabitants of “The Village” on the other side of the island). There were certain aspects of this episode which reminded me of The Prisoner series finale.

Every mystery solved leads to a greater mystery.
