The CW officially ordered the long-rumored series today.

The show's going to feature Rip Hunter gathering a team of heroes and villains to stop some sort of Apocalyptic event which threatens all of time and space  (Is it safe to assume that all of Eobard Thawne's time-traveling shenanigans over on The Flash are going to play a role in creating this catastrophic event?)

The Atom, Martin Stein, Sarah Lance/ The Canary, Heat Wave, Captain Cold, Hawkgirl / Kendra Saunders and a new character named Jay Jackson (whose origins sound a lot like Cyborg's) will make up the core members of the team.

This sounds like a lot of fun, but as I mentioned on the Flash thread a few months ago, I'm concerned that Greg Berlanti and his crew are spreading themselves a bit too thin.  Arrow's had a pretty weak season this year, and that's with only one additional program on their plate.  Throw in this show, the upcoming Supergirl series, and the Vixen animated series, I'm starting to worry about the quality control of all this programming.

  • That's kind of a hokey premise, and I worry about Hawkgirl's wings (Hawkman was realllllly cheesy-looking on Smallville). And it ain't The Atom until he shrinks! But I'll watch it anyway.

Captain Cold and Heat Wave? Really? Weird.

The good news is that Black Canary won't be on Arrow any more (I hope). She and the guy who played Arsenal both apparently went to the Blake Lively School of Inert Acting. Without those two stopping the show dead in its tracks, it will seem to move faster, even if it doesn't!

  • What I'm reading says that Caity Lotz will be on the show but it doesn't say who she plays. They're being cagey.

On Arrow she played Sara Lance, the dead one, and isn't currently playing Black Canary. Since this new show stars a time traveler, she could be playing her dead character or a different character entirely.

  • Yeah, I probably should have clarified that the producers have yet to confirm Lotz's role, but that several sites are presuming that she'll be playing Sara, who'll most likely be plucked from the timestream before her death or resurrected in the Lazarus Pit in the Arrow finale.

As for Hawkgirl's wings, I'm assuming they'll be CGI.  When the actress was cast a couple of months ago, the producers said that her wings will be mystical in nature and magically sprout from her back when she's ready to leap into action.  That should make them a bit less clunky to recreate on screen than the Nth Metal-powered harnesses that they've traditionally been in the comics.

If they use the Lazarus Pit so soon people will get the idea that deaths are meaningless. Welcome to our world.

Will this be the first time one of the Hawks has been depicted with wings coming from the body and not being artificial?

  • In his mid-nineties solo book, Katar Hol was given the powers of the "Hawk Avatar" by one of the Egyptian gods, and magically sprouted his wings from his back when he transformed into Hawkman.

Also, in the Justice League/ Justice League Unlimited cartoon and its various offshoots, Shayera Hol's wings were supposed to be biological, and were just a natural part of Thanagarian physiology.

  • Wings that come and go sound like a concession to the realities of live-action. In comics, we never see the Hawks actually travel through a doorway.

  • I like the idea of a show with Rip Hunter but I could really do without Captain Cold. I was already irritated that people seemed to be more scared of his cold gun then they would be of a regular gun for some reason. Then the other night I was catching up on some Flash episodes and noticed that he has suddenly started talking like Snagglepuss.
  • Thufferin' Thucotash!

  • It's been revealed that Caity Lotz will be playing a character called "White Canary".  There's no explanation as to what that means exactly, but the promotional image shows her wearing a white leather costume instead of the black leather number she wore in her Arrow appearances.

It almost sounds to me that the show could be resurrecting her from the dead (a la Gandalf the White) rather than pulling her out of the timestream before her death.

They just posted a trailer, Cap. Hang around for the end:
