For a while now, I’ve been posting reactions to big “meaty” arcs such as The Eighth Doctor Adventures, Dark Eyes, Doom Coalition and The Collected War Doctor. Some of the stories I plan to listen to in the near future, though, are either one-off adventures or three story arcs. I thought it would be easier on the indexer (Hi, Bob!) if I started one “catch-all” thread and maintain the index in the initial post myself. I invite others to contribute to this discussion as well, and it doesn’t have to be strictly Doctor Who, either; anything from Big Finish will qualify. I’m going to start in a couple of days) with…

THE FIVE COMPANIONS: I listened to a friend's copy of this one once before but it was so early on in my following of Doctor Who overall that I couldn't really appreciate it. The plot is simple enough (the Doctor and his friends are caught between the Daleks and the Sontarans... oh, and there are dinosaurs!), but the real draw is witnessing the various companions meeting for the first time and being reunited with the Doctor. The one thing I didn't quite get (and it was even raised twice in the script) is how Sara Kingdom could be there.

I've got that. As I recall, someone called "Jeff" who isn't you (!) sent it to me. Her "resurrection"  was explained in another audio adventure.

Yes, I know. The "friend" I alluded to above was you.

Here are some things coming up from Big Finish in January or in the near future.

MASTERFUL: 2021 is the 50th anniversary of the Master, and Big Finish is puling out all the stops with a release that brings together all five of the TV masters and all three of the audio ones. Roger Delgado will be represented by Jon Culshaw (via Kamelion) and Katy Manning. (It's also Jo grant's 50th anniversary.) the way the story is structured, the middle sections have the various Masters pairing off: Geoffrey Beevers and Eric Roberts; John Simm and Derek Jacobi; Alex Macqueen and the young Master played by Milo Parker; Michelle Gomez and Mark Gatiss. the doctors all get together from time to time, why not the Masters?

THE DIARY OF RIVER SONG: SERIES EIGHT: This one changed quite a bit from the original plan due to the pandemic, allowing Alex Kingston and her daughter (in quarantine with each other) to record together. this series will feature (among other things) the return of the Mechonoids. Another new "character" is FE-LINE to play against K9. (Why they didn't name it KIT-10 I'll never know.)

THE FOURTH DOCTOR ADVENTURES SERIES 10: Volume one has a January release date, volume two February.

Everything above is (or will be) available in January (or February). In addition, Lady Christina de Souza will be getting her second box set in July of this year.

I just received my copy of Stranded 2 in the mail yesterday along with the latest copy of Vortex magazine.

LOST IN TIME: Big Finish has released two new "Lost in Time" stories, that is, ones written from unproduced television scripts. "The Doomsday Contract" is set during the Romana/K9 era, but the one that intrigues me more is "Return of the Cybermen." It is sort of an alternate version of "Revenge of the Cybermen" and can be slotted into continuity in its stead. Robert Holmes extensively rewrote "Return" into "Revenge"; consequently, there are significant differences.

The biggest news, however, is that they have recast Harry Sullivan and even Sarah Jane Smith. For the "purists" among those reading this, I would like to say that Big Finish's re-castings are never done in a haphazard manner. The voice actors playing characters such as the Third Doctor and #6 (from The Prisoner) are virtually indistinguishable from the originals. Plus, Sarah Jane will be played by Sadie Miller, Elizabeth Sladen's own daughter. Miller has worked for Big finish before, playing Natalie alongside her mother in the Sarah Jane Smith series.

"THE END OF THE BEGINNING": Big Finish's monthly "main range" is coming to an end. It started out with "The Sirens of Time" (featuring the Fifth, Sixth and Seventh doctors together) in 1999, and has been going ever since, alternating stories among those Doctor as well as the Eighth. But knowing where to begin can be a daunting prospect for new listeners and, in a world where the cost of everything keeps going up, Big Finish needs to expand its audience base in order to afford to keep making these adventures.

I've never been a big fan of the "main range" myself. Ordering by subscription is more economical than buying individually, but I was initially interested primarily in the Eighth Doctor, then later, the Sixth. In order to hear those stories in the main range, I was either "forced" to buy stories of the Fifth and Seven Doctors as well, or pay more money. I think it's a good move on their part. "The End of the Beginning" is written as a bookend to "Sirens of Time" and features the Fifth, Sixth, Seventh and Eighth Doctors.

Oh, also!

Producer david richardson said, "There are lots of wonderful new things to come. Where did the First doctor and dodo go after leaving the planet of The Savages? what happened to the Second doctor after The War Games? what new adventures await the third doctor and Sarah Jane Smith? what Happened on the Seventh Doctor's Last Day?* the adventures are only beginning..."

*I'm particularly axcited about this one since I myself suggested it in "Vortex Mail" a couple of years ago. (Nicholas Brigs replied, "The sound you hear is the wheels within my head turning.") I see the story has now been given a title. (I had suggested The Last Adventure of the Seventh Doctor.)

Rory gets his own series: Preview.

THE SIXTH DOCTOR ADVENTURES: THE ELEVEN:

The Timelord known as "The Eleven" was first introduced in the Eighth Doctor's "Doom Coalition" series, and he went on to meet the Seventh Doctor. Now it is the Sixth Doctor's turn in a brand new box set of three hour-long adventures. The Doctor's companion will be Constance Clarke, and a new character will be The Eleven's wife. The Eleven is played by Mark Bonnar, and The Eleven's wife will be played by Mark Bonnar's wife, Lucy Gaskell (Kathy Nightingale from "Blink").

DALEK UNIVERSE (featuring the Tenth Doctor):

Nine hour-long episodes across three box sets. His companions will be Anya Kingdom and her android colleague Mark 7. Anya was first introduced in The Fourth Doctor Adventures - Series Eight. Later, Anya and Mark 7 met River Song in The Diary of River Song, Vol. 8. From there, the Fourth Doctor and Leela meet Mark 7 in "The Dalek Protocal." Big finish is always concerned about breaking the integrity of the Doctor's timeline, and producer David Richardson has reportedly thought of a a way out of that.

The exact relationship of Anya Kingdom to Sara Kingdom has yet to be revealed, but will be in Dalek Universe.

Mark 7 any relation to Gary Seven?

No, but writer Andrew Smith (no relation to our own Captain Comics) reveals in Big Finish's Vortex magazine: "We look into Anya Kingdom's family. I was an odd thing, trying to work out what her realtionship would be to Sara Kingdom. and Bret Vyon, and what was Sara's relationship to Bret. She says he was her brother after she kills him, but that's it. So I worked something out. We've got her grandfather in this story, too, Kerrick Kingdom, and her grandmother was mother to Sara and also Lena, who is Sara's sister. Anya is Lena's daughter.

"Her grandparents divorced and her grandmother married someone else whose surname was Vyon, so he's Uncle Bret. I drew up a family tree and circulated it to other writers after I ran it past David and hohn--I had to get it all straight in my head!" So basically, Sara Kingdom is Anya's aunt and Bret's half (or step) sister.

More upcoming releases...

275. THE END OF THE BEGINNING:

This is the last of the monthly "main range," which began in 1999, as I mentioned seven posts back. I have the first and I have the last; now all I need is every one in between. (Not.) the beauty of Big Finish is that multiple Doctors can play a part in an overall arc spanning hundreds of years in a way not possible on television because all Doctors' arcs progress simultaneously. Oftentimes this takes the form of three back-to-back standalone releases in which the Doctors never meet but, on rare occasions, a single release has a part for three separate doctors and they all come together in the end. that is the case here.

The first part belongs to the Fifth Doctor, traveling with Turlough); the second is the Sixth Doctor and Constance Clarke (plus Flip Jackson, briefly, before she is sidelined); the third part is the Eighth Doctor and Charley. They all have a piece to a puzzle that they don't realize is a puzzle until the fourth part, when they meet up with their favorite instructor from their academy days. When that Time Lord becomes a threat, a surprise hero appears to save the day (although it's not much of a surprise if you've seen the cover or seen the credits or read my previous post on the matter).

As hoped and expected, the scene where the three doctors (and their respective companions) come together in part four is worth the price of admission. Let's see what I can remember...

FIFTH DOCTOR: You're Charley, aren't you? Nice to see you again. You remember Turlough...?

CHARLEY: No, I don't think I've had the pleasure.

FIFTH DOCTOR: Really? I thought you met that time we...

SIXTH DOCTOR: You must be Charley.

CHARLEY: How do you know?

SIXTH DOCTOR: I don't know...

[Funny if you've heard "Blue forgotten Planet"]

Constance Clarke finds the Eighth Doctor attractive.

FIFTH DOCTOR (aside): I grow into a bull in a China shop, don't I?

EIGHTH DOCTOR (aside): Don't worry, you grow out of it.

I'm not sad to see the main range come to an end (because the most economical way to purchase new releases "forced" me to buy stories I didn't want), but some of them were quite good.

RETURN OF THE CYBERMEN:

"Return of the Cybermen" is part of the "Lost Stories" range, that is, stories that were written for the original show but were not produced for whatever reason. In this case, Gerry Davis's "Return of the Cybermen" was extensively rewritten by Robert Holmes to become "Revenge of the Cyberman." There are some similarities, but enough changes were made to justify its own recording. It slots in very nicely between "Genesis of the daleks" and "Terror of the Zygons" as a sort of alternate "Revenge of the Cybermen."

What makes this one kind of neat (as I mentioned in a previous post to this thread) is that Sadie Miller, Elizabeth Sladen's daughter, is cast in the role of Sarah Jane Smith. (She even asked her father's permission before agreeing to do so, which is kind of sweet.) Miller is not specifically trying to immitate her mother, but their voices are pitched similarly and every once in a while, a little Sladen inflection shows through. It's an interesting exercise in comparison/contrast and a nice little "done-in-one."
