I loved the first issue of this book, as I have stated elsewhere.

Just when a smile came to my face as I realized that Oberon was Danny DeVito, they pulled the rug out from under me.

The reaction of Barda when she found Scott was spot-on.

Orion showing up was interesting and made sense (as awful as his tactics were). Highfather walking along the beach with Scott was great to see. And then Barda and Scott having to deal with a bigger crisis right in the middle of the immediate crisis was just like life--stuff doesn't happen in a timeline that makes sense or is convenient.

What a great exploration of mental illness this appears to be. Scott Free is the last character I would expect this from, but I think that's probably the point. Everyone has struggles that no one knows about, and entertainers seem to be susceptible for whatever reason.

I'm already looking forward to owning the Deluxe Edition in hardback. For the next year, I know I'm going to get something good at least once a month.

  • Well, okay, fine. I still lov d this book!
  • Oh, man, I really liked it, too! I just wanted to reread it before I said anything!
  • I read an interview with King where he said that this was one of the most ambitious projects he's taken on.  He talked about wanting to try and do something on the level of Watchmen.

He also had an interesting take on the Mister Miracle/Orion dynamic.  They are essentially two sides of a coin and Orion had always been presented as this angry malcontent kind of guy even though he had been raised in luxury whereas Scott had been raised in the Hell of Apokolips but didn't seem too traumatized. I think King is planning the play around with that psychology a little bit. It should be interesting.

  • I got the feeling in just a few panels that Orion has tried to gloss over the fact for years that he was raised on New Genesis. He has always tried to act so tough and as though he was raised on the wrong side of the tracks, when nothing is further from the truth.

It reminds me of a few kids in the town where I teach, which is very much the "fluffed pillows of New Genesis", who try to act all thug and gangsta.

It's an interesting (and apt) aspersion to cast on someone like Orion, and I'm surprised it's never been explored before.

  • I didn’t see this at my LCS last week nor did I see it this week, so I asked the owner about it. He confessed that he under-ordered. He ordered double the number he sells per month of Kamandi Challenge, but failed to factor in the “Tom King Effect.” He had a copy behind the counter and let me have it. I’m sure he’ll up his order for the months to come, but I added it to my P&H to assure I don’t miss any more issues.

  • My LCS owner said that it's already selling for $25 online, and that was yesterday. Luckily, after I bought Batman/Elmer Fudd, he said, "You're going to want to get Mister Miracle added to your list." I'm so glad I had him add it for me!

  • I read Mister Miracle #3. We are getting darker and darker here, aren't we? It's intriguing trying to decide what is real and what is in Scott's head, because I'm not convinced it's all real. The way he tells Barda that "You missed Bug and Lightray" after a murder had just taken place makes me think there is some kind of delusion/hallucination going on. We do get some light at the end of the tunnel when we discover that it's most likely the Anti-Life Equation infecting Scott from the inside.

Back when I first was looking through comics and making my very first purchases, I was taken by the Fourth World with the artwork in Mister Miracle by Ian Gibson. Little did I know that this was pulling me into the Giffen/DeMatties world. These two titles made Mister Miracle one of the few characters I will check out regardless of who is drawing or writing them (and there have been some duds over the past 30 [Holy crap!] years). Never would I have guessed that it would pay off for me in this series by Tom King and Mitch Gerads. I am already pining for the Deluxe Hardcover Edition.

  • Last week, on the "What Comics Have You Read Today?" discussion, I compared Tom King's use of language to Alan Moore, particularly on page four off issue #3. I found the contrast of the Kirby-esque bombast juxtaposed with ordinary, non-splash panels striking.

Turns out your description of "Kirby-esque" was spot on. Here's some of Kirby's text as repurposed from the original Mister Miracle # 3 to the current issue #3: 1936918033?profile=original

If things continue to progress in sync with the original series, then we should be seeing Doctor Vundabar and his Murder Machine pretty soon.

  • Wow! Nice catch!
