Saw a Takashi Miike picture called The Great Yokai War. "Yokai" is a Japanese term for monsters from folklore, as opposed to the more familiar kaiju. It's a kids' picture, about a young boy from Tokyo sent out to live in the countryside with his older sister and his intermittently senile grandfather. When a vengeful spirit appears, the boy gets caught up in a war between warring groups of yokai and must find his courage to become the "Kirin Rider", the hero who will set everything to rights. It's not a bad picture - nothing deep, but an amusing story. Some of the yokai are really trippy, Japanese folklore can get pretty "out there", apparently.

FRITZ THE CAT: Reading The Life and Death of Fritz the Cat last week put me in the mood to watch two movies: Crumb (for the third time), and (to a lesser degree) Fritz the Cat. Tracy vetoed Crumbhard, but to my surprise, she was receptive to watching Fritz the Cat. I was certainly aware of the movie when I was in elementary school (an x-rated cartoon!?), but of course never saw it. After having finally satisfied my curiousity, I can pretty much say that the film does not deserve its "X" rating ("R" sure, but it's not that risqué). Now that I'n seen it I need never think of it again.
DOUBLE DYNAMITE: I spent something like 30 years wanting to see this film. Then about 20 years ago, I bought it on DVD, watched it, forgot it. TCM aired it last week so I decided to watch it a second time. It's not a great movie, but where else are you going to have the opportunity to see Groucho Marx and Frank Sinatra together? It's also a Christmas movie, with the resolution of the plot coinciding with Christmas Eve.
