My Column Art is Gone

I know we have a thread about problems on the board, but I can't find it, so I'm going with my own discussion.

About an hour ago, I pulled up one of my older columns to reference, in order to answer a question on another site.  To my horror---and accompanied by every swear word I learnt in twenty-seven years in the Navy---I discovered that the art in every column I posted from 08 July 2023 and before was gone, replaced by labels like this: 12131920290?profile=RESIZE_710x

Now, I still have the art for each of those columns.  Re-installing it won't be difficult, but it will be time consuming.  But before I spend all that time in tedious effort, can anybody tell me what happened?  And, more important, is there a way of bringing all the art back more easily?  I thought I'd wait a couple of days to see if it comes back on its own, but I suspect it won't.

Any advice would be much appreciated, gang.

  • That's not the logo that appears at the top of each page, Peter. Well, I should say used to appear at the top of each page. You can probably see the "broken link" icon at the top like I do. I hope I can find a copy of that somewhere, but it's going to take some time.

    • I'm hoping that someone at Ning took it upon themselves to archive the missing images and that they are all recoverable.

  • Also 23 of Peter Wrexham's posts are missing from the "Homage: Action Comics #1" thread.

    • I just looked. Even though the thread didn't start until 2024, Peter's posts that are missing are identified as links to 2019 posts on a different thread. This (to me anyway) validates my discovery that all images dated December 31, 2020 and earlier are the missing ones.

    • Yes, the missing images are ones that I copied from 2019 posts on the "Cover a Day" thread.  That is to say, I just highlighted the image on the original post, and did a copy-and-paste (Ctrl-C/Ctrl-V) into the "Add reply" box on the new thread.  So both posts would include the same HTML, being a link a single image in Ning's storage.

Serves me right for trying to recycle!  If I'd uploaded a fresh copy of the image, the newer one would still be there.

I've resumed restoring the art on my columns.  I've got about fifty or so to restore.  It's not difficult , but it takes about twenty-to-thirty minutes per column.  I try to knock out two or three a day.

I don't have a whole lot of faith thst Ning will fix things.

You all know the bromide about clouds and silver linings.  Well, it turns out that there is a left-handed benefit to having to replace the art in all my old columns.  Over the last few years, I've learnt a few tricks about art sizing and placement which have benefited my Deck Log entries over the past couple of years.  But, even for a perfectionist like myself, it wasn't worth the trouble to go back and play around with the art of my columns from many years ago.

Well, as I'm forced to re-install the art anyway, it gives me the chance to make it better where I can.  There's a bit of gratification in that.

I'd still rather not have to do it, though,

  • I took this photo in 2014, when my then kitten (now 10) was standing on my keyboard. Is this the logo you are trying to find?

  • Two things:

    1) I now see that the photo of Peter David has disappeared from the “Peter David suffers a series of strokes” thread. It says that Cap created the thread on December 1, 2022. Was the photo copied from something dated before 2021?

    2) If this turns out to be something in the coding automatically removing images older than a certain date, are we in danger of losing all the 2021 images?

Why yes, that's what I expect. It looks automatic. And if we don't complain and at least stop the progression, it will probably move up each calendar year.

And I am complaining. Got another "we're working on it" today, just like I have every other time I've complained.
