Show 205: "Rocket Attack U.S.A.", first broadcast 10/27/1990
The Short: this week it's Chapter Two of "The Phantom Creeps", in which does mad science of some sort. I found it hard to follow.
The Film: From 1961, this is an extremely simple-minded Cold War drama in which an American spy infiltrates the USSR and spectacularly fails to stop the nuclear destruction of New York City. Badly-written and badly-acted.
The Host Segments: Joel gives Servo a "haircut", then tries to sell him hair care products. Joel invents an adding machine that prints out on those papers strips that used to have little candy bumps on them. Do those still exist? The Mads invent Foosball Water Polo. Joel explains the Charlie McCarthy hearings on Un-American activities. Joel and the Bots play Civil Defense Quiz Bowl. The SOL is visited by Russian cosmonaut Sorri Andropoli (Mike Nelson) and his lame robots. Joel, Crow and Servo all complain about the movie.
Note: this is the first episode to have a brief selection (or "stinger") from the film after the closing credits. In this case, it's a blind guy casually saying "Help me" in what has to be one of the least-convincing line readings I have ever seen.
Rating: An OK episode. The host segments are fairly amusing.

Show 412: "Hercules and the Captive Women", first broadcast 9/12/1992
The Film: This is a Franco-Italian production from 1961, featuring Reg Park as Hercules. there aren't any "captive women" in this, that I noticed. Dunno why they changed it from the original title, "Hercules and the Conquest of Atlantis". That said, it's an OK picture, in which Herc and son more or less accidentally destroy Atlantis.
The Host Segments: Gypsy wants to watch the movie, Joel allows it. Frank invents the Lawn Baby. Joel and the Bots invent the Womb-Mate. Gypsy doesn't last long in the theater., before making her excuses and leaving. Joel and the Bots do good-natured brawling. Crow reads Herc's bio from "The History of the Gods". Crow and Servo have made a Hercules talking action figure. It's very sleepy. Joel and the bots do a funeral for the last Hercules movie. (They ended up doing another one the next season.) Frank is being chased by his lawn mower.
Favorite Line: "Today is dedicated to Uranus." (Genuine dialogue from the movie!)
Rating: A fairly good episode, not nearly as soporific as most Hercules pictures.

During the brief time Elvira was back on the air a few years ago she played this movie and made numerous jokes on the way everyone kept saying Uranus, which they pronounced exactly the way they now say don't say Uranus.

Show 413: "Manhunt in Space", first broadcast 9/19/1992
The Short: Another episode of "General Hospital", in which one woman gets engaged, another woman get a hiatus hernia, and Roy Thinnes is involved, somehow. I never was a big GH fan.
The Film: From 1954, this is more adventures of Rocky Jones, as he battles space pirates. Not bad, actually.
The Host Segments: Joel discovers that Tom is colorblind. The Mads invent Bean Bag Pants. Joel and the Bots demonstrate Recycled Paper Clothing. The Bots play soap opera. Joel disapproves. Joel, Crow and Servo discuss the use of the word "space" as a modifier in films like this. Winky (Mike Nelson) calls the SOL from his mother's basement. It doesn't go well. Joel turns Crow into a guitar and Servo into an amp.
Rating: A pretty good episode. I think I would've liked "Rocky Jones" if I'd been a kid when it was on.

Show 1013: "Diabolik", first broadcast 8/8/1999
The Film: From 1968, a European film about super-thief who gets caught between the law and a crime syndicate. So-so stuff. well-shot, but not a great story.
The Host Segments: Mike and the Bots find the SOL Employees' Handbook. Pearl accidentally causes the SOL to start heading back to Earth. She also finds that the self-destruct doesn't work. Servo destroys his spare selves. Pearl's going to be dictator-for-life of Qatar. Bobo's going to the zoo. Observer's going to be the All-Knowing Eternal Universal Consciousness on Rylos 14. Crow'a afraid to go to Earth. Mike and the Bots sing a song to cheer him up. As the SOL is falling to Earth, Pearl shuts down Castle Forrester and Bob and Observer make a run for it. the SOL crashes to Earth and we hear a brief snatch of "Who Will I Kill?" as we fade to white....
...Some time later, we see that Mike, Crow and Servo are sharing an apartment in or near Milwaukee. Gypsy has started a successful company which the boys, with their usual lack of foresight, opted not to buy into. No word on what happened to Cambot, Magic voice or the Nanites. I like to think that it's Cambot who's showing us what Mike and Compay are up to. As for Magic Voice and the Nanites, who knows? Perhaps they're working for Gypsy. As the show ends, we see Mike, Crow and Servo settling down to watch "The Crawling Eye", a film which seems somehow familiar...
Rating: this was the last episode of the series to date. The film was forgettable, but that's OK, because what we're really interested in here is the final fates of the characters. I'd say they got a pretty good send-off, as they sit and voluntarily watch the same kind of movies they spent all those years being forced to watch. ( "The Crawling Eye" was the film they watched back in the very first episode.)

Show 815: "Agent for H.A.R.M.", first broadcast 8/2/1997
The Film: From 1996, this is a low-level spy movie with a bit of a sci-fi twist.It was originally meant to be a TV pilot, but it got a theatrical release, instead. Not very good.
The Host Segments: Crow and Servo are being "extreme". Mike enjoys some"extreme" rice. Mike is hauled before the Intergalactic Tribunal on account of the three planets he destroyed. The judge is played by Bill Corbett, who unfortunately sounds indistinguishable from Observer. Mike inadvertently picks Bob as his defender and Pearl as his prosecutor. Bobo defends mike, sort of. Bobo presents video depositions from Servo, Crow and gypsy. They are of limited utility. Observer testifies, and Bob catches him in a lie. (Bob seems a little brighter than usual, here.) Pearl questions Ortega (Paul Chaplin). Bob calls a Little Amish Boy (Bradley J. Keely) as a character witness. Mike is convicted, but gets his sentence reduced to 800 hours of community service.
Rating: A pretty, one where the quality of the host segments overshadows the fact that the film itself was fairly lackluster. Amusing stuff.

Special: "First Annual Mystery Science Theater 3000 Summer Blockbuster Review", first broadcast 9/2/1997
Mike, the Bots, and Pearl and Company comment on "The Fifth Element", "The Lost World", "Men in black". "Contact" and "Batman and Robin".
Rating: Fairly amusing. Proof, I think, that having a big budget and big-name actors doesn't necessarily mean your film is automatically all that good.

Show 811: "Parts - The Clonus Horror". first broadcast 6/7/1997
The Film: From 1979, this features Peter Graves, Dick Sargent and Keenan Wynn. It's the story of a young clone who escapes from what is essentially an organ farm for the rich and famous. A so-so, very 1970's kind of movie.
The Host Segments: Mike has a mustache. Crow and Servo react to it positively, in a negative sort of way. Three lost Space Children (Mike Nelson, Bridget Jones, Paul Chaplin) find Pearl, Bob and Observer. They "play" with Pearl and Company. Mike and the Bots try to distract the Children by imitating kids' TV - first a cloying PBS type show, and then a frenetic Mexican show. Pearl and Company tell the Children the facts of life. Crow has a nose job. Servo awakens the Children from their nap.
Favorite Line: "Never store combustibles with your old people."
Rating: The film is forgettable, but the riffing is pretty good. The host segments are quite funny, especially the one where Pearl, Observer and Bobo each give their take on the facts of life.
