After the events of the past few years, fighting against the forces of evil nonstop, Buffy Summers finds herself succumbing to the burden of bearing the Slayer mantle. To help his Slayer, Rupert Giles risks turning to chaos magic, and with Willow’s help, they attempt a spell to remove the trauma from Buffy’s psyche. Sarah Gailey is a Hugo Award-winning and bestselling author of speculative fiction, short stories, and essays. They have been a finalist for the Hugo, Nebula, and Locus awards for multiple years running. Their bestselling adult novel debut, Magic For Liars, was published by Tor Books in 2019. Their most recent novel, The Echo Wife, and first original comic book series with BOOM! Studios, Eat the Rich, are available now. Their shorter works and essays have been published in Mashable, The Boston Globe, Vice, Tor.com, and the Atlantic. Their work has been translated into seven different languages and published around the world.

“I am thrilled and honored to be writing stories in the universe of Buffy the Vampire Slayer! This iconic property helped to draw me and many of my peers and colleagues into the worlds of action and horror, and I hope my run will continue pushing the boundaries of what a monster-fighting story can be,” said Gailey. “I can’t wait to bring a whole new set of adventures to Buffy fans everywhere.”

Irene Flores is an illustrator, occasional author, karaoke aficionado and full-time coffee drinker. Growing up in the Philippines, she was heavily influenced by both Japanese animation and American comics. She currently lives and works in San Luis Obispo, CA, and her goals for the future include creating another graphic novel, participating in an escape room, and eating a Monte Cristo sandwich.

“Welcome to a new era for the Buffy Summers you’ve come to know and love over the past several years, as the incredibly talented Sarah Gailey, Irene Flores, and Ed Dukeshire take our Slayer, her allies, and enemies in a bold new direction,” said Elizabeth Brei, Editor, BOOM! THE SECRET HISTORY OF THE WAR ON WEED ONE-SHOT

Fan-favorite creators Brian Posehn, Gerry Duggan & Scott Koblish reform Voltron (metaphorically only) from their days on Deadpool (also not appearing) to tell a true story and lost chapter from the nation’s sad and failed war on drugs.

"I am always game to stir up some comic book silliness with Koblish and Duggan," said Posehn. "With our 4/20 adventures of Scotch McTiernan, we might have outdone ourselves. 'Eighties references, ultra violence and high jokes-per-page rate is our wheelhouse. We leveled our wheelhouse this time. Check it out!"

The year is 1985. The First Lady decides to crush Northern California cannabis farmers and deploys the biggest tool in the armed forces: Scotch McTiernan (collectible first of many hilarious appearances). “If it weeds … we can kill it.” Scotch puts his boots on the ground in Humboldt and does what he does best — but what happens when he gets high for the first time?

Duggan added: "My most hilarious and messed-up comics have been collaborations with Scott and Brian, and this is our funniest and most screwed up comic yet. If you like '80s action comedy, alternate histories of the United States, and are marijuana-curious, then this comic is for you."

This one-shot has it all: laughs, tears, heart, action — plus, an activity page! A portion of the proceeds from this comic will be donated to organizations dedicated to helping casualties of America’s immoral drug war.

"I’m proud to be getting together again with two of the craziest minds in comics and comedy!" said Koblish. "If you’ve enjoyed the work we've done together you’ll know that we pack every page with humor, action and manic adventure — and this comic doesn’t disappoint! I can’t wait for everyone to check out this book and take a hefty swig of Scotch!"

CAPTAIN AMERICA #0

Story: Tochi Onyebuchi, Collin Kelly & Jackson Lanzing  | Art: Mattia De Iulis | Steve Rogers Cover By Alex Ross | Sam Wilson Cover By Alex Ross | Wraparound Variant Cover By Mark Brooks | Letters: Vc’s Joe Caramagna | Teen+ | $4.99

This year marks a new age of Captain America with the launch of two Captain America ongoing titles. Writers Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly and Marvel Stormbreaker artist Carmen Carnero will tell the adventures of Steve Rogers in CAPTAIN AMERICA: SENTINEL OF LIBERTY while writer Tochi Onyebuchi and Marvel Stormbreaker artist R.B. Silva will see Sam Wilson soar as Captain America once again in CAPTAIN AMERICA: SYMBOL OF TRUTH. The journeys of both shield bearers will begin in April’s CAPTAIN AMERICA #0 where they will team up after an explosive attack by Arnim Zola. Right now, fans get a first look at the opening battle in CAPTAIN AMERICA #0 in a new action-packed preview, featuring artwork by Mattia De Iulis!!

“You can see in the #0 issue that we're getting to play with our favorite scientist, Arnim Zola, THE BIO-FANATIC!” Kelly told CBR in an exclusive interview. “That's a really fun touchstone for us, but what we wanted to do is introduce a new cast of villains. These villains pulling the strings have their own personalities and motivations and they command a force unlike any Captain America has ever seen. That includes lieutenants, generals and power players. They are critical players in the history of the Marvel Universe, American history, and the world history of the last hundred years.

“We're giving those characters individual identities that will allow them to stand on their own. So, if and when we do bring in some more of these legacy villains, we want them to be able to stand toe-to-toe with Doctor Doom. ... These will be characters that Doom also knows of and is reluctant to cross.”

“Issue #0 is effectively a conversation between Steve and Sam about what it means for both of them to be Captain America simultaneously," Lanzing explained to Entertainment Weekly. “But that conversation isn't had in a room sitting down over beers, that conversation is had while flying/holding onto the side of a massive rocket heading into the sky to obliterate all of mankind because Arnim Zola is back and he's got a bad plan."

"We've seen Sam Wilson deal with the legacy of Captain America and race in very inward terms with regards to America: What does it mean for America to accept a Black Captain America?" Onyebuchi says. "One of the things I'm teasing in my book is, what does it mean for the rest of the world to accept a Black Captain America? That's another part of the equation. If Captain America is in many ways a mimesis of America, with all the good and bad pathologies, what does that mean for the way in which America interacts with the rest of the world?"

'With our story, what we really wanted to start looking at was, how has America changed? What does it mean to be a patriot now?" Kelly added. “Cap can't turn his back on America, neither of the Caps can, because the idea is good. The core is good and worth fighting for, but both need to wrestle with what that means in the year of our Lord 2022."

The first arc of Donny Cates and Ryan Ottley’s mind-blowing Hulk saga will reach its epic climax as Bruce Banner’s control over Starship Hulk slips…and something much worse takes the wheel. Known only as TITAN, fans can see a new glimpse of this force of destruction on a newly revealed HULK #6 variant cover by acclaimed artist Alex Maleev.

“This new threat is basically the Hulk’s Knull, but just like Donny and Ryan’s run on HULK overall, it’s crazier and more dangerous than you can imagine,” Editor Wil Moss said. “The heroes of the Marvel Universe may think Hulk is the problem, but he’s not — THIS is the problem. And after HULK #6, there’s no stopping it …”

WOLVERINE #20

Story: Benjamin Percy | Art/Cover: Adam Kubert | Variant: Tyler Kirkham

Wolverine’s ongoing series returns this April with more thrills by the same all-star creative team, writer Benjamin Percy and artist Adam Kubert. The duo of masterful Wolverine storytellers have been delivering non-stop action-packed adventures in what is shaping up to be one of the greatest Wolverine runs in recent history. Now in the aftermath of X LIVES OF WOLVERINE/X DEATHS OF WOLVERINE, they’re back to take the character on some of his most brutal missions yet. And this time, Deadpool is coming along for the ride!

Deadpool was the king of Staten Island — now he wants to be an honorary citizen of Krakoa. Wolverine just wants him to shut up. But when Deadpool uncovers a dangerous plot that could mean doom for the mutants’ safe haven, it’s going to take a titanic team-up of the Best There Is and the Merc with a Mouth to quell the threat. But that doesn’t mean Logan has to like it. Featuring Wolverine and Deadpool at their most savage plus the return of a fan-favorite X-character to the Krakoan era!

“For 10 weeks, the X LIVES OF WOLVERINE/X DEATHS OF WOLVERINE will take readers on an epic, time-shredding adventure that sets up the next era of the mutant books: Destiny of X. How do you follow up something like that? You keep raising the bar higher. Readers will not only experience a non-stop thrill ride, starting in April, but a kickoff story that is as irreverent and hilarious as it is heart-bruised,” Percy promises. “We've been teasing Deadpool for some time now, and he's bullying his way into the pages of Wolverine for a wild (and reluctant) team-up that feels like some cousin to Midnight Run and The Fugitive. Get ready for more Maverick mayhem, more CIA spycraft, and more DANGER (yes, you read that right) at every turn.”

“Every time a new character or storyline is introduced in WOLVERINE, it feels like a fresh start and an opportunity for Ben and me to reinvent the wheel,” Kubert said. “WOLVERINE #20 is no exception with one exception. Deadpool's not a new character. Having drawn him before (most recently on the cover to DEADPOOL BLACK WHITE AND BLOOD #1), I feel more like I'm visiting an old friend. Things change, yes, but our relationship stays the same. For me, DEADPOOL remains one of MARVEL's greatest characters. Featuring him alongside WOLVERINE doesn't get any better and I hope (and think) you'll feel the same … Bub!”

“I know this is impossible to fathom, but Adam Kubert has never been better,” Percy said of his legendary collaborator. “His mind-blowing layouts — including a motorcycle action sequence for the ages — are beyond comparison.

“Without giving away any spoilers, this is going to be an explosive and complicated year for the mutants,” Percy added. “You'll soon learn how the future of Krakoa (and mutantkind) is in peril, and Wolverine will of course be at the center of it all, slashing and hacking away.”

Wolverine and Deadpool. When these two get together, what force in the Marvel Universe would dare get in their way?

  • This isn't a first issue, but it's being marketed like all the other new X-books that are first issues. Maybe Marvel considers this the first issue of Wolverine in the Second Krakoan Age, i.e. "Destiny of X."

That is, at least until the day they are nearly squashed by a Care Corp Storm Catcher, a giant android built to protect Cloud Town and the rest of Floating Island from Hurricanes, monsters that travel across the Rip. It isn't the event itself that changes the girls' relationship. It isn't the fear of death that drives them apart, or the questionable decision-making that leads Pen to drag Olive into the cab of the crashed robot. It's the fact that Olive can move the 90-foot-tall machine and Pen can't. Care Corp recruits Olive to train as a  pilot, so that she can protect Floating Island when the next attack comes. It's a role reversal, for which neither of the girls are prepared.

FLUNG OUT OF SPACE GN

Story: Grace Ellis | Illustrator: Hannah Templer | Abrams ComicArts | $24.99

A fictional and complex portrait of bestselling author Patricia Highsmith caught up in the longing that would inspire her queer classic, The Price of Salt.

Flung Out of Space is both a love letter to the essential lesbian novel, The Price of Salt and an examination of its notorious author, Patricia Highsmith. Veteran comics creators Grace Ellis and Hannah Templer have teamed up to tell this story through Highsmith’s eyes — reimagining the events that inspired her to write the story that would become a foundational piece of queer literature. Flung Out of Space opens with Pat begrudgingly writing low-brow comics. A drinker, a smoker and a hater of life, Pat knows she can do better. Her brain churns with images of the great novel she could and should be writing — what will eventually be Strangers on a Train —  which would later be adapted into a classic film by Alfred Hitchcock in 1951.

At the same time, Pat, a lesbian consumed with self-loathing, is in and out of conversion therapy, leaving a trail of sexual conquests and broken hearts in her wake. However, one of those very affairs and a chance encounter in a department store give Pat the idea for her soon-to-be beloved tale of homosexual love that was the first of its kind — it gave the lesbian protagonists a happy ending.

This is not just the story behind a classic queer book, but of a queer artist who was deeply flawed. It’s a comic about what it was like to write comics in the 1950s, but also about what it means to be a writer at any time in history, struggling to find your voice.

Author Grace Ellis contextualizes Patricia Highsmith as both an unintentional queer icon and a figure whose problematic views and noted anti-Semitism have cemented her controversial legacy. Highsmith’s life imitated her art with results as devastating as the plot twists that brought her fame and fortune.

This inspiring volume illustrates their diverse anxieties and finding self-empowerment in a world not quite built with them in mind.

  • As Richard Willis says, these sorts of memoirs are probably helpful for those who identify. They just make me sad, though, so I'll pass.

PROJECTOR AND ELEPHANT GN

Art: Seth | New York Review Comics | $49.95

Two surreal graphic novels about technology, corporatization and alienation in the modern world by a cult-favorite comics innovator.

In 1968, the British artist and writer Martin Vaughn-James emigrated to Canada. Over the next eight years, he proceeded to produce some of the most mesmerizing and inventive works in comics, light years ahead of his contemporaries. Among them were Elephant and The Projector, linked graphic novels that guide the reader (and a bespectacled Everyman) through landscapes built out of both the everyday and the nightmarish. Jam-packed superhighways, plummeting horses, vast urban wastelands, colossal businessmen, demented cartoon animals, and interstellar oranges are just a small part of Vaughn-James's prophetic vision of society's turn away from the natural world to the artificial.

Together for the first time in a single volume, designed and edited by Seth and with an introduction by Jeet Heer, Elephant and The Projector stand as a reminder that we have yet to catch up to Vaughn-James.

FABULOUS FURRY FREAK BROTHERS: IDIOTS ABROAD & OTHER FOLLIES HC

By Gilbert Shelton & Paul Mavrides | Fantagraphics | 160 pages | B&W | $19.99

The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers are the most iconic and enduring underground comix characters ever created, having sold over 45 million comics in 16 languages. Fantagraphics is proud to announce that it is collecting all their drug-addled adventures in a new series of four volumes under the series title The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers Follies with the first volume being The Idiots Abroad and Other Follies. The Freak Brothers will also find a new audience in their upcoming animated series starring the voices of Woody Harrelson, Pete Davidson, John Goodman and Tiffany Haddish.

Created in 1968 by Gilbert Shelton, widely recognized as one of the funniest cartoonists who ever lived, the Freak Brothers’ rollicking and hilariously self-destructive escapades are comedic masterpieces of farce and satire. Our first volume leads off with “The Idiots Abroad,” a relentless novel-length tour de force of slapstick and screwball humor, showing off Shelton’s gift for weaving together an intricate plot with droll dialogue and pitch-perfect visual timing.

The Brothers — Freewheelin’ Franklin, Phineas, and Fat Freddy — embark on a trip to Colombia to score some cheap dope (their guiding principle) but, as always, things go awry, and they are separated and scattered around the world — to Scotland, Moscow, Africa, South America and the Middle East — where they encounter nuclear terrorists, slavers, pirates and religious fanatics, yet somehow never seem to make it to Bogotá. The Comics Journal named “The Idiots Abroad” as one of the “100 Greatest Comics of the Century” and The Guardian, citing its “graphic quality,” called it “astonishing” and said it “recall[s] Hergé in … accuracy and detail.” Rounding out our first volume is another 70 pages of Freak Brothers short stories.

  • I'll undoubtedly get this, but I wonder how well these stories will hold up. It's not like underground comix were super-professional to being with. In fact, most were incoherent, badly drawn trash. But Shelton was among the best, so we'll see.

Ghostly Tales was part of a wave of new horror and suspense comics published by Charlton during this period. It debuted with issue #55, taking over the numbering of Blue Beetle (which itself had continued the numbering of Unusual Tales). Over the course of its 18-year run, Ghostly Tales was edited by Pat Masulli, Sal Gentile and George Wildman, with a stellar lineup of regular contributors, including Rocco Mastroserio, Steve Ditko, Ernie Bache, Charles Nicholas, Dick Giordano, Pat Boyette, Bill Ely and Rudy Palais.

This first volume features Charlton's Ghostly Tales #55-59 (April-May 1966-January 1967).

  • This is starting to make sense. The regular HC was listed last week, while the slipcase and Softee are listed this week. Hence the confusion. Meanwhile, only the slipcase edition of Silver Age Classics: Unusual Tales Vol 1 is listed as shipping this week, while the HC and Softee will presumably be released next week. But all three versions of Ghostly Tales and Space Man are listed as shipping.

SILVER AGE CLASSICS: SPACE MAN VOL 1

PS Artbooks | 184 Pages | Slipcase Edition: $56.99 / Bookshop Edition: $46.99 / Softee Edition: $24.99

SPACE MAN was rocket ace Ian Stannard, who was accompanied by his 14-year-old sidekick, Space Academy student Johnny Mack. They blasted off from Cape Canaveral in their space ship, the Flyin' Jenny II. Their mission was to find and destroy what had prevented Moon exploration for the last decade. After succeeding, they continue to explore the depths of space, along with Ian's girlfriend, the famous pilot Mary Lansing.

DRIFT MARLO ran security at the 1st Strategic Aerospace Division (SAD) at a major U.S. space center, where he helped prevent interference into America's space program, often by a rival foreign power!?!

    • Is this a Sailor Moon parody? I don't know enough about Sailor Moon to say. Also, that second cover is borderline manga.

It sonds as though it could be.

Or am I thinking of something else? Flint Henry, maybe...?

I'll tell you, I spent a not inconsiderable amount of time searching for that possibly "Zeck" homage (looks like one to me, too) from a couple of weeks ago, but I couldn't find it.

  • Oh, good catch! I didn't notice how familiar that cover was. You've probably nailed the right one, although Flint Henry might have done something similar, too, with Grim Jack or elsewhere. It would not surprise me if this construction hasn't been used more than once.

I feel you on the MIke Zeck thing from a couple of weeks ago. I know I've seen that construction somewhere, but I just couldn't find it. I went through Master of Kung Fu, Captain America, even Sgt. Fury. (I had a vague recollection of Fury in New York with the buildings looming above him. I found it, but it wasn't as close a match as I'd hoped.) I searched "Mike Zeck covers" on Google Images. Ran down a couple of other blind alleys. Curses.

  • The figure in front: was it Spider-Man? Batman? Captain America? A soldier?

The figure dropping down from behind: Batman? Spider-Man? Wolverine? Predator?

    If not Zeck... Gulacy?

I checked Marvel Tales, too (because Zeck did a run of Punisher covers).

    Arrggh!!

  • GOOD ASIAN #10 - I think this is the final issue of this mini-series. A very good read.

You just can't have too many gorillas! - Let's just agree to disagree on this one.

ARMORCLADS #2 (OF 5) - The first issue was pretty good. Plus, only a five issue investment.

I'll undoubtedly get this, but I wonder how well these stories will hold up. It's not like underground comix were super-professional to being with. In fact, most were incoherent, badly drawn trash. But Shelton was among the best, so we'll see. - I've read some of these relatively recently, and I thought they were pretty bad. Just way too wordy, and not funny.

  • In the solicitations above Titan is described as "the Hulk's Knull".  Unlikely as it may seem, Knull is some sort of Venon-related character.  A deity and/or some form of interplanetary authority for symbiotes.  There was a fairly recent event or crossover revolving around its existence.

I guess this means that this new Hulk series will approach the character from an even more mystically oriented take than the previous one, and add one further "cosmic entity" to Marvel's already overloaded pantheon of superpower giving entities - Knull himself, Phoenix, and apparently now Titan as well.
