JOYAMA VOLS 1-2 TPB

Story/Art/Cover: Daniel Isles | $19.99

Dark Horse Books is thrilled to present the first two volumes of a genre-bending sci-fi trilogy Joyama! Illustrator and comic artist Daniel Isles (also known by his pen name DirtyRobot) crafts an immersive experience through the intricate city of Joyama, introducing eclectic characters and exploring the futuristic architecture of a densely populated metropolitan, while weaving a stylish fast-paced action-packed story of mystery and excitement.

In Joyama Volume 1, a recently closed case has been reopened following a high-level assassination, but this was no ordinary takedown.

Long-time friends Ringo, Arwen and Silas are members of an elite squad known as the Outrider Soldiers, a team of ambitious individuals contracted by prestigious clients and government officials to shake down organized crime. After receiving intel on the hit, a recently closed case is reopened. With ties to the most notorious crime syndicates and influential figures in the city, the conspiracy surrounding the case deepens and the danger intensifies. Is the case worth their freedom, their relationships, their lives? Or could there be something more worth pursuing — an ordinary life, peace ... love?

And in Joyama Volume 2, tension is rising in the city and a highly anticipated tournament could see it all erupt.

Two houses are on the brink of war as coordinated attacks are carried out throughout the city — hitting the sacred heritage sites of the Royal House. With a legendary tournament set to begin, the city’s on alert, and all eyes are on the House of Vipers — those suspected of committing the violent acts. Meanwhile, Rubi has made a new home for herself living with Ringo — she’s officially an Outrider assistant with a few missions under her belt and now, tough as nails. But Ringo seems to have only two things on his mind — exacting revenge on Black Cotton, and envisioning all that could have been with his love, Arwen. With Ringo’s squad left scarce, a new member joins the team — one unlike any other! Amid the clamor of the upcoming tournament, the city in unrest, and Viper activity at the border, the Outriders soon discover this alleged feud goes deeper than a house rivalry.

“This book is truly a passion project and I hope for readers to become so immersed they feel as though they themselves are residents of Joyama. This melting pot of madness, emotion and love.” — Daniel Isles

FLASHPOINT BEYOND #1 (OF 6)

Story: Geoff Johns, Jeremy Adams, And Tim Sheridan | Art: Xermánico | Covers: Mitch Gerads, Xermánico, Gary Frank, Todd Nauck | 32 pages | $4.99, Variant $5.99

Starting with issue #1 on April 19, Johns will share writing duties with Jeremy Adams (THE FLASH) and Tim Sheridan (SHAZAM) and artwork from XERMÁNICO (INFINITE FRONTIER) with a new issue coming out every two weeks.

“This is something that, as a fan, I’ve been waiting for a long time — a return to the world of Flashpoint,” said Sheridan. “The fact that I’ve gotten to be a small part of that return is just about the coolest thing that’s ever happened to me and getting to be associated with Geoff, Jeremy, Eduardo, Xermánico and a team that's put their whole hearts into this, has made it no less than surreal. I can’t wait for people to see these pages!”

“It’s been a privilege, and incredible learning experience, to work with these talented writers, artists, inkers, letterers, colorists and editors for this series,” said Adams. “Talking story and character has been eye-opening, and the lessons will undoubtedly color everything I do from now on. I’m beyond excited that DC fans will get to go back to the Flashpoint Universe and experience a grounded mystery that will evoke serious philosophical questions while tugging at your heartstrings.”

In FLASHPOINT BEYOND #1 Batman’s hunt for the Clockwork Killer brings him to Europe and face to face with the mad king, Aquaman. On the eve of Aquaman’s sinking of London, Batman infiltrates his stronghold and goes on the warpath for answers. Nothing matters to Batman, whose world is already dead, but if he can track down the Clockwork Killer, Thomas can save his son’s world and put everything back together again.

  • Technically not a first issue — that would be Flashpoint Beyond #0 a couple of weeks ago — but still worth a mention.

HARDWARE SEASON ONE #5

Story: Brandon Thomas | Art: Denys Cowan, Bill Sienkiewicz | Covers: Mateus Manhanini, Edwin Galman | $3.99

Out of the frying pan and into the fire! Curtis Metcalf returns to Dakota with a bounty on his head and Reprise is looking to collect! But what chance does Hardware have against a man who can make an army of himself at a moment’s notice?

  • Does this cover construction seem familiar to anyone else? I went through various X-Factor series covers (looking for Multiple Man), and Blue Beetle (looking for the Madmen), but didn't find it. Could be Lobo (he can multiply) or even Spider-Man (the central figure seems to have spider-sense). Or maybe it's not an homage at all, and my brain is playing tricks on me.

Together with Milena, he tries to figure out the purpose of the Tower and finally decides to climb to the top.

The Tower, presented in this new edition, is a fabulous story for the exploration of a deliquescent world, an epic fable to the dimensions of world-building, a fantastic escape full of paradoxes, simulacra, and pretense. Magnificent mastery, invention, and poetry, this is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful jewels of the exciting saga of the OBSCURE CITIES.

METAL SOCIETY #1

Story: Zack Kaplan | Art/Cover: Guilherme Balbi, Marco Lesko | Covers:  Guilherme Balbi, Qistina Khalidah, Alan Quah, Mateus Manhanni, Fernando Blanco, Marc Silvestri | $3.99

In a future world of robots, extinct humans have been brought back to life — but will they earn their place in society, or will have to fight for it? The forthcoming Image/Top Cow sci-fi mini series — Metal Society by Zack Kaplan (Port of Earth, Eclipse), Guilherme Balbi, Marco Lesko, and Troy Peteri — explores just that with a side of MMA-Style sport fights.

In Metal Society, the creators take readers on an inverted future, where evolved robots resurrect humans for manual labor. But, a tribalistic cultural clash breaks out, causing a fearless human fighter and a frustrated, displaced robot to square off in a public fight of epic stakes.

“While our own technology, our politics, and our world are changing faster than ever, sadly our society seems to be responding with aggression and hostility. We’re resorting to tribalism and we’re allowing our differences to be aired out publicly for entertainment value," said Kaplan. "I’ve always been inspired by great robot stories that remind us of our own experience, and I thought that by exploring this Rocky-style fight drama in a futuristic robot-ruled world — this charged robot vs human culture clash, and the 'human' fighters that get pulled into these public battles — we might just learn something about our own humanity and our social conflicts today.”

Paired with newcomer artist Guilherme Balbi, they created a rich world in which readers can suspend disbelief and put themselves into the story. Balbi commented, "Creating a new world is always a big challenge, and even getting bigger because everything with 'robots' is even more difficult, but that's exactly what makes this world so special. There are many details, wires, and many, many gears. I try to get a lot of inspiration from movies and references, and mix with the things I like. Understanding Zack's vision for this project was very important to take another step in my growth as an artist, but in this work I took flight."

Kaplan added: “I'm thrilled to be doing another hard sci-fi series with Top Cow, and if you are not familiar with impressive artist newcomer Guilherme Balbi and incredibly talented colorist Marco Lesko, well, get ready, because they are an awe-inspiring duo that just energizes and brings life to each and every page of this comic."

"Zack Kaplan is one of my favorite writers to work with," said Matt Hawkins of Colossus and Think Tank and President at Top Cow. "And this is, in my humble opinion, his best work yet. Metal Society, artificial intelligence, robots ... what more could you want?"

  • I know it's sci-fi and I should suspend disbelief, but ... I have to wonder what sort of society that has succeeded an extinct human race would want to resurrect us? Our history is one of greed, selfishness, violence, arrogance, aggression and virulent, unfounded hatred. As for manual labor, we're also incredibly lazy, so you would be better served with a donkey.
  • Here's a trailer.

GIANT-SIZE X-MEN: THUNDERBIRD #1

Story: Nyla Rose & Steve Orlando | Art: David Cutler | Covers: Ken Lashley, David Cutler | Teen+ | $4.99

In yesterday’s dramatic conclusion of Leah Williams and Lucas Werneck’s X-MEN: TRIAL OF MAGNETO limited series, fans witnessed the stunning resurrection of a legendary hero in the X-Men mythos — John Proudstar AKA Thunderbird! The first X-Man to die in action, Thunderbird’s time on the X-Men may have been brief but his impact was mighty, and now his long-awaited return to the Marvel Universe will be explored this April in GIANT-SIZE X-MEN: THUNDERBIRD #1. This mega-sized one-shot will mark the exciting Marvel Comics debut of All Elite Wrestling superstar Nyla Rose, who will team up with comics star Steve Orlando and First Nations artist David Cutler. Together the trio will grapple with the ramifications of Thunderbird’s recent resurrection while setting him up for a bright future on Krakoa and beyond.

The world John Proudstar has returned to is completely different from the one he once knew. Looking to find refuge in the familiar, Thunderbird seeks out someone from his past at an Apache reservation … and uncovers a horrifying threat to the Indigenous mutant community. Will Thunderbird be able to save his people? Or will his justified rage lead him astray?

“At last, the news is out! GIANT-SIZE X-MEN: THUNDERBIRD is coming, and I couldn't be prouder to be a part of it! But this book wouldn't exist without the incredible work of Nyla Rose and David Cutler, who are joining me on this blockbuster to tell a Thunderbird story that's as raw, real, and riveting as possible,” Orlando said. “With their invaluable help, we're taking Thunderbird on a two-fisted quest to reunite with his family and carve out a place for himself in this brave, new, Krakoan era. The world has changed while Thunderbird was away. The threats might've gotten more complex, but Thunderbird's still sure there's not a problem out there he can't solve with his own two hands.”

What’s the secret of Loki’s last trick, and how does it affect the future of Asgard and Midgard alike?

“Roving the spinner-racks and trading cards of the early 1990s, the world of 2099 was my first future dystopia, its neon haunted visions of Marvel's future close to my heart. And at the forefront of that future, fighting as anyone with his name always has, for the everyday folks of the future? Miguel O'Hara. Spider-Man 2099. So here, decades later, celebrating the 30th Anniversary of 2099 is a dream come true! Let's make history together in SPIDER-MAN 2099: EXODUS — and lead the people of 2099 into a new tomorrow!”

While ARCHER & ARMSTRONG FOREVER offers a welcome return for Valiant fans, the upcoming comic also serves as a great jumping-on point for new readers to experience the unique dynamic between the two iconic characters. "I can’t wait for returning readers to meet all of our new faces (some of them quite weird, to be honest) and for brand-new fans to discover why Archer and Armstrong are pillars of the Valiant Universe!"

Marcio called his work on ARCHER & ARMSTRONG FOREVER "challenging in the absolute best sense of the word!" The globe-trotting adventure means the artist had the opportunity to bring a wide variety of scenes to life. "ARCHER & ARMSTRONG FOREVER is taking me everywhere as an illustrator and as a reader. Historical references, exotic places, all sorts of mythical creatures... it's the whole enchilada plus the kitchen sink and more!" The title's variety of genres also allowed Marcio to connect with the duo in a meaningful way. "Steve's script swerves from pure drama to belly-aching humor and that's what makes this project so special to me. It is a real pleasure to be working alongside such a great team! I can't wait for the fans to see what's in store for them!"

ARCHER & ARMSTRONG is a passion project for the entire creative team. "As a letterer, one of the best things is opening a script and art and seeing the team throwing page after page of fun at it,” stated Hassan. “That's definitely the vibe after one issue, a globe-trotting action-adventure where I get to bust out ridiculous balloons and sound effects just to keep up with Steve, Marcio, and Alex."

Alex remarked that the team is bringing something new to this fan-favorite duo, both visually and narratively. "Valiant is an amazing place to be and many colorists I admire have been part of this house. As a colorist I couldn't be happier," commented Alex. "It's a new step in everyone's career... and the biggest beneficiaries will be the readers."

THE GRUNCH: WELCOME TO THE BRUDDERHOOD #1

Story: S.A. Check, James Kuhoric | Art: Claudio Avella | Covers: Puis Calzada,  Claudio Avella, Buz Hasson & Ken Haeser | American Mythology | Mature | $3.99

American Mythology Comics has brought the fear to horror fans all year long, with a string of horror hits like 2021’s runaway fan favorite, Willy’s Wonderland, a prequel series to the 2021 cult movie starring Nic Cage. The same publisher brought fans a fresh dose of delirium with a new Fright Night comic series, picking up where the original Tom Holland classic left off, and they delivered even more of the ever-popular Adam Green’s Hatchet comic series, along with some in-house modern classics like Scary Christmas, Beware the Witch’s, Shadow and A.M. Monsters! If you’re a fan of horror comics, American Mythology’s got your back, there just may be a knife stuck in it!

Now, the comic publisher is releasing a brand-new tale of terror with The Grunch! A horror comic with bite! Fresh from the ground up minds of the American Mythology horritorium, this tale of terror was ripped straight from the pages of the Louisiana folk lore and legend, dating back hundreds of years of black magic, voodoo, and things that go bump in the swamp. Part twisted human, part hungry beast, all teeth and terror! Come along with your tour guide, Johnny Detour, and his band of misfit vloggers as they delve deep into the murky myths surrounding the murderous brood! Finding the carnivorous clan is only half the battle — getting back out alive is the real trick! There’s always time for a detour!

The Grunch is the all in, blood-curdling, hide-under-the-covers, fear-for-all comics we love here at American Mythology,” said Barlow Jones, AM’s Marketing Director.  “A tale straight out of American folk-lore and fable, but filled with fright! Don’t make a wrong turn down old Grunch Road or you may just never back it back alive! We brought the whole horror crew together on this one to bring fans something special to help keep them up at night, whether they wanted to or not! It’s one part horror, one part insanity, and all parts a good time for fans of the genre. Do yourself a favor and bring a little Grunch into your life! Just don’t invite them over for dinner – you may not like the menu!”

“It’s Grunch Time, brudder!” said series co-writer S.A. Check. “We reached deep down into our collective nightmares and pulled this little beauty of a horror comic out! We wanted to bring some fresh horror to the fans, something to pay homage to some of the great creature features of the 70’s and 80’s, but with our own little spin to them. Even if you’re familiar with the legend of the Grunch and Grunch Road, we’ve twisted things up a bit and added our own take to the bloody brood! The book has been an absolute blast to work on and everyone involved is psyched to get this into the hands of horror fans. Come join Johnny Detour and his friends on this wild and bumpy ride on a backroad straight into the heart of terror!”

QUESTS ASIDE #1

Vault is thrilled to announce the new fantasy-comedy series, QUESTS ASIDE, written by Brian Schirmer (Fairlady, Black Jack Ketchum), drawn by Elena Gogou (Campfire Stories, My City) colored by Rebecca Nalty (Bog Bodies, Heavy Vinyl) and designed by Tim Daniel. It's Always Sunny in The Realms!

A skeleton, an apprentice mage, and an exiled princess walk into a bar … for another shift at Quests Aside, the local watering hole run by once legendary, now retired adventurer Barrow. When the King privately explains that he plans to shut the place down, Barrow must find a way to hold onto his business and the family he's built around it.

“I’ve always loved stories about the thief who wants to take One Last Score, or the outlaw who needs to take One Last Ride," said Schirmer. "Their eyes are frequently fixed on retiring thereafter. Usually, things don’t work out as they planned. We take this conceit to a fantasy realm, where a legendary adventurer has already actually succeeded in taking One Last Quest, opened a tavern, and got to retire. That’s where we begin."

"With a set cast of bartenders, servers, and a skeleton cook, QUESTS ASIDE — the series and the tavern itself — also features a steady flow of colorful characters heading out to slay a dragon, or returning with a treasure, a few scrapes, and tales to tell. We liken it to high fantasy Cheers or It’s Always Sunny. I wanted to write something that was about friendship and (found) family, and the lengths we’ll go in order to protect, preserve and (sometimes) exploit those relationships. I also wanted it to be fun, funny, and occasionally absurd.”

“In the world of QUESTS ASIDE you can have your old-time adventures who went on epic quests in their youth, but you will also get heralds with three-neck electric guitars, orc stand-up comedians and 20-year-old mage apprentices with anxiety," added Gogou. "There are no rules. I love this genre of fantasy, the one that takes more traditional fantasy elements and flips them on their head. When designing the world and the characters I tried to follow the same principle. I wanted the book to look familiar to what you’ve seen before, but with a little unique touch. For that I took a lot of inspiration from Greek culture, among other things. From the character's looks and clothes to musical instruments and table top games you’ll notice them playing in the background. I wanted to create a really rich, interesting and fun world and I can’t wait for Brian and me to share this story with you.”

I went decades as the only person I knew who had read the Eddas, or Thor, or had any idea about the Norse myths. Now, thanks to Marvel Studios, "Jotunnheim" and "Mjolnir" and "Bifrost" are words you can drop into conversation.

Together, Merlin and Hector will not only face the fearsome Skinshifters, but also discover what fate has in store for them. If they manage to survive...

  • I confess, I've never seen an Arthurian story that made Sir Hector (also Ector and Cynyr) a major character.

MY FIRST PANDEMIC GN

Story/Art: Jamison Odone | Black Panel Press | $29.99

My First Pandemic is a collection of drawings, thoughts, poems, comics, anger, happiness, life, and death from a difficult period in our history. Over the last two years, between crises and quarantines, Jamison has had time. Time to reflect, to page through old books of poetry, to draw hundreds of rabbit people — for some reason. The loss of a stepfather, followed by the loss of a good friend, gives cause to contemplate one's own mortality. It's strange how the thoughts of 19th-century poets can echo our own. What will we leave behind when our time comes? Sadness, sure, but also wee, silly drawings in honest-to-goodness paper and ink.

MY ONLY CHILD HC

Story: Wang Ning | Art: Ni Shaoru, Wu Yao, Xu Ziran, Quin Chang | Fanfare | $26.00

It is estimated that there are over 218 million only children in China today following more than three decades of a one-child policy by their government. Under the ruling, which ran from 1980 to the end of 2015, most couples were only allowed one child under penalty of fines, forfeiture and even sterilization. Government figures state that around 400 million births were prevented in that time. But some unforeseen circumstances caused much heartache and grief for upwards of 10 million couples who lost that only child and this book tells four of their tragic stories.

  • Wow, I guess I just assumed that if your child died you could have another, since it would still be "one child." Not so, apparently.

Now trapped at the bottom of an abyss where not a ray of light reaches, they have only one thing to do: wait for help and survive.

    • I remember this guy from Paul Grist's Jack Staff at Image some years back, where he was called "Eternal Warrior" (not to be confused with the Valiant character), but made so many references to being a long-running character from UK comics that I looked him up at the time. He started at I.P.C. in 1970, moved to Fleetway, and is now at Rebellion. I read him relatively recently in some "Rebellionverse" book where he was teamed with The Leopard from Lime Street, Steel Commando, Dr. Sin, Pete's Pocket Army, Blake Edmonds, Yāo and Thunderbolt the Avenger. It was meh. I'd rather have Jack Staff back. Or Becky Burdock, Vampire Reporter. Or even Tom-Tom, the Robot-Man!

Tor the prehistoric warrior is a loner whose only true friend is his pet monkey, Chee-Chee. Joe Kubert described Tor as superior to the others in his clan, with an extra spark of humanity, who was instinctively striving for a better, more civilized way of life and with thanks to the work and obvious love that went into the series, what might have become a standard adventure strip, with man battling monster within the unusual prehistoric-world settings and situations was actually elevated to art! We're positive you'll love the thrills, adventure and danger that lurked everywhere one million years ago! Collects Tor #1, 3,4, 5 (September 1953-October 1954) and NAZA Stone Age Warrior (November 1963).

    • The first issue of this was originally offered as a magazine, so I'm encouraged to see that at least some of PS' magazines are being repurposed to HCs, where I will buy them. But hasn't Tor already been released by DC? I think I have a collection somewhere.

  • "Does this cover construction seem familiar to anyone else?"

I don't know what cover you may be thinking of. Nothing about it screams out to me like that "Mike Zeck" (?) one you posted a couple of weeks ago which we still haven't identified. A couple of similar ones come to mind. Is it one of these?

TAILS OF THE SUPER-PETS TPB: I purposefully didn't pre-order this one because it's cheap enough I'm willing to forgo my pre-order discount so as not to be committed to it.

    TOR:

"But hasn't Tor already been released by DC?"

DC released three volumes of "The Joe Kubert Library" between 2001 and 2003. It was complete across publishers at that time, but DC has since released an addition six-issue limited series in 2008. I am disappointed they never went back to press with a fourth volume.

  • Thanks for the Tor explanation, Jeff. The Comics Cave is in such a state of disarray that I couldn't find anything if I wanted to. (And I do want to. It is a misery.)

And I appreciate enormously your efforts at finding the homage origin. I could have posted half a dozen "almosts" that I found, but I didn't, because why post things that aren't what I'm looking for? But seeing your post, now I'm thinking, "It's almost as much fun posting the near-misses because we're big comics fans, and besides, they might lead us to the right path." Next time I will, because you have directed me, O my Jedi master.

Also, on the Super-Pets: Same. I'll see what discount Instocktrades offers, and if the book is cheap enough, I'll get it, just for the nostalgia. But I don't really need it.

  • Does this cover construction seem familiar to anyone else?

It made me think of posters, etc, about the movie The Matrix and its sequels. The Hugo Weaving character appeared as multiples. I looked at Matric comic covers and Google images. This was the closest I found.

  • "...you have directed me, O my Jedi master."

Oh, please. I am the Padawan. You are the Master.

I posted the "almosts" this time simply because it didn't strike me as a specific homage (plus, I recall you had expressed admiration for that Superman: America Alien cover when it was published).
