Homemade Sweet Ice Tea (left over from yesterday's pot luck)

Fat Tire Amber Ale

Samuel Adams Irish Red

Earlier, I enjoyed some spaghetti with pesto. Now, I'm having my second glass of Cabernet Sauvignon as I am gradually snowed into my home. I made the mistake of opening my front door about ten minutes ago and having quite a bit of snow blow in on my face. Makes me feel a lot better about closing it and staying inside and planning to just shovel in the morning.

Right now, I'm watching DePaul beat Seton Hall, but I don't really care about either team, so as soon as I get this laptop off my lap, I'm going to change the channel. The good news is that college basketball is much more interesting since conference play has begun. Still, I'm thinking Big Bang Theory sounds better than this.

Beignets in Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport.

I stopped drinking alcohol of any kind since my last doctor visit in August... not forever, just until my next appointment in January. I just wanted to see if I could do it. Once before, back in the '90s, I stopped drinking beer for three months, just to see how long I could go. (After three months, I figured I had proved whatever point I was trying to make.) But now it's been nearly five months, the longest I have gone without drinking beer in my life (or since I started, anyway). I frequently dream about it.

I haven't had any alcohol since before COVID, so at least two years, probably more like three. I never officially stopped drinking, it just sort of happened.

I never started drinking alcohol. I have had beer or wine of a few (very few) occasions; I can count them all on two hands.

PUMPKIN SEEDS: Tracy and I always have some kind of seeds of nuts in the house to snack on. The other day I picked up a package of pumpkin seeds because I hadn't had them in a long time. They are so good. Tracy mentioned that she hasn't had any since college, which means I have had any since we've been married, more than two decades now. It won't be that long before I buy more.

PEPPERONI CHIPS: I also bought some thin pepperoni slices with the intention of making chips (a low carbohydrate alternative to traditional chips made from potatoes or corn). I like them crispy so I put them under the broiler for a few minutes, but I soon discovered the secret is "low and slow": 350 degrees for 8-10 minutes.

PICKLED HERRING: I have been searching for this for well over a month now. We used to always have pickled herring on New Year's Eve when I was a kid (it's a German thing), but I didn't want it for that, necessarily; I was just in the mood for pickled herring. German heritage is a big part of North Texas, so I thought it would be easy to find. My grocery store's website said they carried it and in which aisle to find it, but no luck. Then, the week before New Year's, I noticed an unusual amount of shrimp available. "Is that some sort of substitute for people who don't like pickled herring?" I wondered. Then, after New Year's, I found it right where I had been looking all along. Maybe it's more popular than I thought.

Ah, yes. Back in the day, every time we went to my grandpa's house out in west Texas, my mom would take a few jars of pickled herring out to him. He didn't even have to ask her any more. I've never had it, but I have been tempted a few times since I see it all the time at the grocery store.

I am currently eating smoked peanuts that my dad made.Pretty damn good.

Break, a hazy IPA from Heart State Brewery, which is in the Columbus, Ohio area.  I'm partial to IPAs in general but is well above average.

1800 REPOSADO TEQUILA: I'm not much of a tequila drinker. when I found one I liked (really liked: Casamigos) I stuck with it and buy it exclusively every time I'm in the mood, but last week one of Tracy's clients gifted her with a bottle of 1800 Reposado. It's very smooth, but I don't like it as much as the Casamigos Anjejo. Casamigos makes a Reposado as well; perhaps I will try that sometime.
