MISSISSIPPI FRED McDOWELL - "I Do Not Play No Rock 'n' Roll"
McDowell may not have played rock 'n' roll, but rock 'n' roll sure played plenty of him. If you've ever listed to the Rolling Stones or Led Zepplin or Aerosmith or even Elvis Presley to any great extent, chances are you've heard some Mississippi Fred McDowell songs. I Do Not Play No Rock 'n' Roll is probably his best-selling album, yet it rates only two stars in my record guide. The vinyl album has been out of print for years, but it was released on CD back in 2001, remastered with new tracks. That's out of print, too, but no so difficult to find. I bought it at my LRS today.

Led Zepplin caught a lot of flak for their adaptions of old blues songs without providing proper credit. Its a wonder that hasn't happened more often to other artists who have done much the same thing.
I could go on (and on and one). I never heard about the "flak," though. By the time I came on the scene, it was well-established and accepted that groups such as the Rolling Stones and the Yardbirds introduced the music of blues greats such as Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters to a whole new generation. I will admit to being shocked when I first heard the drum riff introduction to "Keep a Knockin'" (in comparison to Led Zep's "Rock and Roll") when I bought a Little Richard album. (I guess that's "COMPARISON #5".)
