  • We're engaged in a re-watch of Slow Horses seasons 1-5 in anticipation of season 6 (Sept. 16). Why can't all TV shows be this good?

    • I've seen the first four seasons -- the fourth just a month or so ago -- and hopefully will get to 5 and 6 soon. I really dig that show.

    • We just finished re-watching season 3, I think. "So, walk me through your thinking on this." I won't spoil who says this, and when, for those who haven't watched it. But it's one of the best lines in the history of history.

Season 3 also has the line, "Whoo -- I hope that doesn't get into the groundwater." Good God, that show is funny. Grim and cynical, yes, but also funny.

I'm not AS crazy about season 4 as I am the others, because of -- and I hate to say it -- Hugo Weaving. I have enjoyed just about everything he's done, from Agent Smith to Red Skull to Elrond to V in "V for Vendetta." But he has the worst American accent in Slow Horses. Now I know how the Brits feel when Americans do "Gor blimey luv" kinda stuff. Maybe it's not as bad as I remember it. We'll probably watch some tonight and I can re-evaluate.

  •  >>No one could draw ugly guys like  Kirby.

Without context, it sounds like a bunch of post-college women meeting at the ol' favorite bar and reflecting on their poor old friend Kirby, who was always getting hit on by unattractive men.

  • I'm watching Lanterns and I'm not totally sold, but I'm getting there... But, I should accept Lanterns on its own terms. That is, as I often tell myself, to not expect it to be comics-accurate but to consider it as alternate-universe take on things.

That is how I feel exactly.

I liked how John Stewart's mother laid into the "recruiter" for the Guardians, letting her know "fearless" is a luxury Black people in America cannot afford.

No argument, but the way his parents raised him borders on is child abuse.

  • Re: Lanterns

Stewart's parents are definitely not heroes. His mother is freaking NUTS. It's child abuse, pure and simple. And poor John -- not only abused, but estranged from his brothers by parental preference. It's amazing he doesn't have a head full of snakes.

I'n not thrilled with burnout Hal, but we do have a version of him from 10 years ago (stored in the ring), where he's a pretty great guy. We could, if Lanterns makes money and continues, see some "young Hal" flashbacks that would scratch our itch to see an icon treated right. And who knows? If he's not dead, maybe this adventure will inspire him to be a hero again. If he's alive.

But yeah, I'm with you guys: Lanterns is an Earth-TV version, and not "our" Green Lantern. And it makes sense for them to start the franchise in a grounded way, and if it works, and sucks in enough mundanes, then we could eventually see the space opera version -- possibly on the big screen. But I'm not going to hope for anything, and possibly be disapponted. I'm going to enjoy what we're getting, and let the future worry about itself.

I would like to note that, despite being a burnout, they're not depicting Hal as stupid -- he's been pretty clever in two interrogation scenes so far. He's clearly smart and experienced. Just, you know, unpleasant.

As to Slow Horses, we re-watched Season 4 last night. And, thankfully, I wasn't as annoyed by Hugo's American accent the second time through. It was still all over the place (mostly bad Midwestern, but sometimes a word or two from Texas, sometimes a vague German accent, sometimes words pronounced with no clear provenance). but it didn't grate on me like it did the first time. I was able to roll with it just fine. Don't let me ruin it for anyone else.

We're planning on Season 5 tonight or tomorrow, to catch us up before Season 6. We're also going to re-watch the version of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy with a younger Gary Oldman as George Smiley, which should be an interesting contrast to slovenly-but-brilliant Gary Oldman in Slow Horses. I wish we could watch the 1979 miniseries with Alec Guinness, but it doesn't seem to be on streaming anywhere.

    • I won't see Lanterns for a while, but I understand the new ep features Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, and they reference Batman. So this begs the question: is this version of the DCU, somehow, sharing a universe with the recent Superman and Supergirl films? Or do they just have parallel Guy Gardners?

    • Oh, Lanterns is definitely part of James Gunn's DCU. The ep you referenced also mentioned Starro (from "The Suicide Squad") and the Superman movie. Maybe "Creature Commandos" too. As expected, Fillion's appearance explains why he's Green Lantern in "Superman," and not John Stewart. It's not been made clear yet who will be GL in the sequel, but John Stewart is definitely in it.

But I have my own question about "Lanterns" and it's this: What did Hal Jordan go to jail for?

  • HAVE I GOT NEWS FOR YOU returns tonight.
