“Duel with Daredevil”

Editor: Stan Lee Writer: Stan Lee Artist: Steve Ditko

Looking back at comic book adverts: Jedi Arena

The flood of video game ads opened up when the Atari 2600 hit

stores in the 1980s, and really hasn't stopped since then. Looking back over the last

30 years of mainstream comics, you can bet there's at least one

full-color ad in every one of them.

To look back at "Star Wars: Jedi Arena," one of the ones I remember well, and a ... uh ... honest-to-goodness transcript of its development meeting, visit… Continue

Astro City’s Season of Discontent

I wish I didn’t have to say it. I wish it wasn’t true. A title that I have long championed is in the midst of a prolonged slump. Astro City: The Dark Age has gotten so bad that I’ve stopped handing the single issues to my wife when I’m done reading them. Oh, I’ll finish the story out. I’ve come this far after all, and…

New 'American Vampire' combines Westerns, bloodsuckers -- and Stephen King

By Andrew A. Smith

Scripps Howard News Service

A lot of novelists, screenwriters and other big names are writing comics these days, but it’s still a jaw-dropper when Stephen King does.

That’s his name at the top of American Vampire, a new ongoing series at DC’s mature readers Vertigo line. Each issue actually contains two stories, only one by King,… Continue

From the Archives: Deck Log Entry # 8 "JLA": Justice League of---Avengers?

Suppose we were sitting around talking about comics, and I brought up a certain issue of a Silver-Age comic about a team of super-heroes. And in describing what happened in the story, I mentioned . . . .

. . . That the story opened up with one member of the team discovering a menace too great to handle alone, so he activates his emergency signal.

. . . That all of the other members respond, gathering at the team’s headquarters.

. . . The…

From the Archives: Deck Log Entry # 7 A "Terrific Team"

World’s Finest Comics # 141 (May, 1964) can boast of two historic “firsts” in DC history:

1. It features the first appearance of the Batman’s the bat-insignia surrounded by the yellow ellipse. (Actually, it was originally a yellow circle, and the “New Look” Batman is something we will definitely be discussing in a future column.)

And

2. The debut of the Olsen-Robin Team.

If your reaction to that second one…

Nbm's 'Odd Hours' GN makes the most of its Louvre setting

By Andrew A. Smith

Scripps Howard News Service

April 13, 2010 -- I’ve been reading comics for more than 40 years, and I still learn something every month.

One especially good teacher is the series of graphic novels commissioned by The Louvre, the famous French art museum. The various books in this series are individual visions by various European creators, with no connection other than all… Continue
