On My Bookshelf, Part 3

Welcome back. Like a lot of comic book fans, I have a bookshelf full of trade paperbacks and graphic novels. I’ve been having fun writing about the books on my shelf- why I bought them, why I liked them, and whatever other thoughts pop into my head. I hope you’re having fun reading about them,…

DC Digital Releases: September 29

Last week was a big week for DC, so it’s probably not surprising that its digital releases are in something of a holding pattern this week. Interestingly enough, the newly-defunct Wildstorm has the most noteworthy new release this week, releasing all three issues of Warren Ellis & Cully Hamner’s Red at once. Want to read the comic before the movie? The whole thing’s yours for six bucks. (Red also dominates the DC store this week, with…

Charlton heroes vs. the Justice League

Ever since the big "birthday gift" deal that brought the Charlton heroes to the DC Universe, the Charlton guys have played second fiddle to DC's premiere heroes. Well, they've had enough of it. Forming together under Project Bullseye, the Charlton heroes, led by the likes of Captain Atom and Blue… Continue

On My Bookshelf, Part 2

I don’t know if this is interesting to anyone other than me, but I’m having fun so I’m
going to keep going. For those just joining us, I’m looking at the trade paperbacks and original graphic novels sitting on my bookshelf and writing whatever I want to…

Deck Log Entry # 110 So, You Want to Join the Legion of Super-Heroes . . . . (Part 1)

If you were a thirtieth-century teenager applying for membership in the Legion of Super-Heroes, you had no trouble getting to the front door. Ah, but getting your foot in the door was another matter entirely.

The Legion of Super-Heroes debuted in Adventure Comics # 247 (Apr., 1958), when the three charter members of the group---Cosmic Boy, Lightning Lad, and Saturn Girl---time-travelled back to the 1930’s to…

DC Digital: Releases for September 22

Big news week for DC, eh? I imagine the changes with Wildstorm and Zuda will shake out on the digital side in the coming weeks. For now, they’re both still searchable as imprints on Comixology, and unless something dramatically changes in the organization of the titles, I’ll probably keep breaking digital releases down into their original imprint.

First things first: Someone…

Archaia's 'Bastards' fun but not pretty

By Andrew A. Smith

Scripps Howard News Service

When you buy a graphic novel from Archaia Press, you know one thing: It probably won’t be like any other graphic novel you’ve ever read. Hybrid Bastards ($17.95) is a case in point.…

DOCTOR UNKNOWN JUNIOR

Dr. Dana Marie Laveau Unknown, PhD, is an incredibly accomplished practitioner of the mystic arts, having attained the status of Level Twelve Magus shortly after her 22nd birthday. She is the daughter of Raoul Deveraux Unknown, the well-known sorcerer/superhero/certified public accountant known as Dr. Unknown. The original Doctor Unknown retired several years ago, after a traumatic incident in which he accidentally destroyed the planet Earth and a large portion of the solar system. Though he… Continue

On My Bookshelf

I thought it would be fun to talk about the comic books on my bookshelf. Like a lot of comic book fans, I have a bookshelf full to overflowing of original graphic novels and trade paperback collections.

Abe Sapien Vol. 1 and BPRD Vol. 1-12

Although I primarily buy single issues (I refuse to use the pejorative term “floppies”), there are a few series that I read as trades. At the top of that list is the Hellboy spin-off BPRD. The Bureau of Paranormal Research and… Continue

DC Digital: Releases for September 15

This week, let’s go with the short stuff first. Vertigo seems quite happy to chug along with five books a week: American Splendor, DMZ, Fables, Sandman and Y. The first American Splendor miniseries concludes this week, but there’s another one after that, so I wouldn’t expect next week’s lineup to change.

Wildstorm has contracted these past couple weeks. This is the third week without the Core Four…

Latest Arkham Asylum GN goes too light on the crazy

By Andrew A. Smith

Scripps Howard News Service

Sept. 7, 2010 -- Ever since Grant Morrison’s 1989 Arkham Asylum: A Serious Place on Serious Earth became a huge hit and an evergreen graphic novel, stories about the notorious mental hospital where The Joker is kept have become something of a cottage industry. Unfortunately, the latest in this genre,… Continue

DC Digital: Releases for September 8

After a few weeks of coasting, the DCU seems to be launching new titles or runs every week, lately. A couple weeks ago saw the debut of Green Arrow; last week we had a new branch of the Batman saga with the Red Hood story. This week, we see four (well, 3½) issues of Birds of Prey. I’d be hard-pressed to think of a worthier…

Retro-Review: Peter David’s Incredible Hulk

He’s big and gray and mean. He’s the incredible Hulk. And I’ve never really read his adventures before. Oh, I have a few issues of the Hulk: some from the late ‘90s that received as free give-a-ways and a couple I had read as a child guest-starring the Soviet Super… Continue
