The Superman Annual #7 may well be my favorite comic of all time. If I only had one comic to keep, that would certainly be it.
In case everyone isn't aware of it, Peter's choice to show the splash page after the cover of Strange Tales #110 is because this comic had the (unheralded) first appearance of Dr. Strange. (Also the first team-up of half of the Frightful Four.)
Hi, Richard,
Thanks. I had hoped when I posted "which introduced Dr. Strange" between the cover and the splash page that people would get it, but I probably should have said "Strange Tales 110 introduced Dr. Strange."
(And, well, at least I am happy you looked at the thread. Beginning to think it got posted and then buried by more popular threads. LOL, felt frustrated, because it took about twenty hours to get all the covers done, fix them up the right size, and then attach all the pictures in the thread. I thought I would be finished around noon on Sunday but it went all the way to after 9 pm that night.)
I've been enjoying all of your "50 Years Ago" postings. There are always some of them I remember fondly. I guess I was still buying the Weisinger Superman at that time, because I did have Superman Red/Superman Blue story. I still think both of the costumes on that cover are more handsome than the usual red-and-blue one.
P.S.: I didn't even notice your "which introduced Dr. Strange" text until you pointed it out.
Richard, I like the blue one but not the red. Maybe it was an early sign I was going to become a Democrat when I grew up, LOL!
This is where I came in. Jimmy Olsen #70 was my first ever comic book purchase. My mother bought an issue of Superboy for me a few months earlier but JO#70 was the first time I spent my own hard earned dime and pennies for a comic book. The issue was a typical Weisinger gem - an intriguing cover for a story that turned out to be a hoax used to set up Superman's Silver Anniversary.
Superboy #106: I find it hilarious that Superboy pulled so many hoaxes that a story titled "Superboy's Greatest Hoax" is valid. Growing up, there were certain words that I never encountered in real life; only in Weisinger comics, where they were in everybody's daily vocabulary. 'Hoax' and 'Invulnerable' were among them. 'Ironic' too, probably.
Giant Superman #7: The last panel in the 'Superman as President' story was relettered in some versions, and I always wondered why. It closes with Clark winking to the reader and saying something along the lines of "Superman could never be President, but Clark Kent could -- Not that he'd ever want to." In other versions the line was "not that he'd ever think to," as I recall. The original version perceived as a bit disrespectful of the office, maybe?
Hard to imagine this simpler time before JFK was shot... when SPider-man was a new concept...and the FF had been around about a year and half a year! Everything was new and untried...and DC was still doing simple, silly superman stories to trick Jimmy and Lois and Silver K was just being introduced!
Never heard of the league of Challenger Haters though....
